« on: Wednesday 03 October 12 00:37 BST (UK)  »
Hello I am looking for information on my relative John (Jack) Hardy born 1798 Sheffield Yorkshire father also John mother surname Wilds or Wild. John Hardy was sentenced to 7yrs in Australia and was a convict on the ship Surry arriving in Australia 1823. He worked for a James Wild (possibly his uncle) who owned a lodging house in Macquarie street Sydney which James had requested a land grant for a year earlier when he resided in Islington. John Hardy was assigned to James Wild as his servant. John Hardy didn't gain permission to marry until 1839 when he married Elizabeth Ibbotson. They had their first child 1840 George, then Charlotte, then Elizabeth. Any help appreciated? John Hardy died 1895 aged 97yrs, he had a sister/sister in law Ann who lived at 32 Burlington street Sheffield prior to 1895.

Roxburghshire / Sir Walter Scott Australian Connection
« on: Monday 16 January 12 12:04 GMT (UK)  »
Hello my grandmothers mother Margaret Findlay was born 11/3/1879 in Jedburgh Roxburghshire Scotland and died 1965 in Australia. She was the daughter of Andrew Findlay a tailor (B 20/4/1851 Banffshire Scotland died 1906 in an asylum in Australia) and Janet Scott a dressmaker (B 1855 St Ninians Stirling). They married in Jedburgh Scotland 1875. Janet Scott B 1855 was the daughter of Andrew Scott (commercial traveller) B 1817-18 and Hannah Potts B 1823 married 1848 (who died when Janet was 3 on 21/2/1857). Andrew scott remarried a Margaret Scott in 1848 in Jedburgh Scotland. Family lore is that Margaret Findlay (nee Scott) was related to Sir Walter Scott. This being possible from all parents - father Andrew Scott and mother Margaret Scott and/or stepmother Hannah Potts (so the story goes). Can anyone help me sort this out? Kind Regards Sandra from Australia
PS I have Andrew Findlays death certificate 1906 Australia and Marriage Certificate (16/7/1875 district of Jedburgh) and census records from Roxburgh 1851 18 Dorwechi Place /1861 9 Market Place

Staffordshire Lookup Requests / Friend/Bentley
« on: Monday 08 August 11 07:40 BST (UK)  »
Hello is there any chance that someone could take a look at any records for a Thomas Friend born 1818 and Sarah Bentley born 1818. Thomas Friend's father was John. Sarah Bentley's father was James Bentley. I have their marriage certificate. They married on 12/11/1838 Parish Burslem County Stafford registration district Wolstanton and Burslem Union. They were both 20yrs old.
Thomas Friend was a potter and James Bentley was a potter. Residence at time of marriage was Hot Lane. I can't make out the occupation of John Friend?
I have a relative called Elizabeth Friend who married a James Bentley - London Gentleman. Their son John Bentley migrated to South Australia around 1851 and married a Johanna Shay from Kilkenny Ireland. They then moved to Katoomba NSW Australia and settled there for the rest of their lives (10 children). Their son John born 1869 was a police officer in SA and NSW with a calling Dentist. I have a inkling that he may have also been related to the Bentley family who migrated from London to SA on the ship called Cheapside in 1849. That James Bentley married Elizabeth Chatterton and stayed in SA until they died. They also had a son called John born 1820 who was a policeman in SA and a apprentice dentist in the 1841 England Census. He died in 1881 (same as my John). There are no records of him having died in SA. I have my John's death certificate died 1881 NSW. His father James Bentley's parents were John Bentley and Rosetta Friend. I feel there is a link somewhere? Any help appreciated!
