Kent Lookup Requests / Gravesend Catholic records
« on: Monday 31 May 21 16:03 BST (UK)  »
Would anyone have access to the records of the catholic church in Milton in Gravesend? I have copies of entries for my great grandfather Edwin Hicks and his three brothers, Henry, Edmund and Thomas. They were all baptised on the same day, 5 Aug 1849. I have often wondered why they were all 'done' together, and think perhaps the whole family was converted to catholicism, and maybe the baptism of their parents, Thomas Hicks and Mary nee Golding were recorded at the same time. would someone be able to check that for me?
Thank you very much.
Sue

Other Countries / Slave records in Barbados
« on: Saturday 13 March 21 14:52 GMT (UK)  »
My ancestor, James Pairman, was Postmaster General in Barbados from 1812 to shortly before his death in 1845. In 1826 he declared the purchase of a number of slaves, 17 of whom he then sold to Helen Pairman, who I think was his daughter, born about 1810. She had a sister, Elizabeth Christian Pairman, who is described at her marriage as 'free coloured'. I can find no marriage for James, either in the UK or Barbados, nor can I find a record of their births. Am I right in assuming that the girls were the result of a partnership with a black slave/free woman, acknowledged by him?
My questions: Were births, marriages and deaths  among the slave population recorded, and if so, where?
When an owner freed a slave, was that recorded in any way - and if so, where?
Were slaves always given the surname of their owner? The only surnames recorded for James in the slave registers are those whose names are not Pairman.

Midlothian / Marie Fraser m. Rev Andrew Ramsay 1605
« on: Tuesday 10 March 20 16:08 GMT (UK)  »
My forbears are well documented as far back as Rev. Andrew Ramsay and his wife Marie  (Mary) Fraser (Frazer). She is mentioned in the Dictionary of National biography as his wife and the mother of his children Eleazer, Andrew, David and William. No dates given!
I found them on the clanmacfarlanegenealogy.info/genealogy website, which takes Mary Frazer's ancestry way back to the Norman conquest. A lot of the forbears named on this site are also well documented. She is the weak link! Given her probable dates, I feel she and her husband should feature in the OPR (I have found them for the christening of Eleazer and David).
Would someone please look for me? Here are the details I have of her:
Marie or Mary Fraser or Frazer; no DOB or place.
Father: Sir Andrew, 6th Lord of Durris
Mother: Helen Arbuthnot
Son Eleazer b. 1614 (OPR)
Son Andrew b.1619 (Dictionary of Nat. Biography)
Son David b. 1625 (OPR)
Son William - no dates.
Married, in 1605 (?) Rev Andrew Ramsay.
I would really like to find something other than the Clan MacFarlane site (which has been really useful in other respects) to link Marie to her parents.
Many thanks!
Sue

The Common Room / Lunacy admissions registers
« on: Monday 15 April 19 16:56 BST (UK)  »
I have found a relative who was admitted to Lincoln Hospital in 1856 and again in 1861. On both occasions her discharge was marked as “Rld.” Can anyone please tell me what this means? I am thinking maybe released but would a patient not recovered be released, unless to a place of safety (eg family?) The second time, she was discharged from Lincoln “Rld” and then immediately admitted to York Hospital, from where, nearly a year later, she was discharged “Recvd” which I presume means recovered.
Do any patient records still exist? And if so, where, and what sort of information would they hold?
Thanks for any help.

Lincolnshire / Stpehens or Peels of Timberland
« on: Sunday 17 March 19 16:55 GMT (UK)  »
My 3 x great grandfather was George Stephens, 1787-1838; he was married in 1808 to Susannah Shaw, in Timberland. They had 7 children, all of whom were given the middle name Peel, including my 2 x great grandmother Eliza Peel Stephens. All this generation seem to have incorporated the Peel into their surnames, and then dropped the Stephens, so that subsequent generations have been called Peel.
I have tried to discover where the Peel came from, thinking that it might have been a surname from a previous generation, but can find no such link. Susannah's parents were Robert Shaw and Mary, but I can find no evidence that she was Mary Peel. I am also puzzled about why the Stephens was dropped. Can anyone help with this, please?

Scotland / parents of Mary Frazer, 1575
« on: Wednesday 24 January 18 12:31 GMT (UK)  »
Hello,
I have traced my ancestry on my mother's side with some confidence to Rev. Andrew Ramsay (1574-1659) and his wife Mary Frazer (1575 - 1650). One Ancestry tree gives *without stating a source) her parents as John Frazer, 7th Laird of Knock (1552 - 1620) and Lady Margaret Leslie, Countess of Wemyss (1560 - ). I can find no evidence to back this up, and am aware that I am now working right at the edge of the start of records, at least online. Scotlandspeople has not come up with anything useful so far, and I tried Burkes Peerage, but just found that confusing. I would love to be able to look at sasines and other records, but have a problem in that I live in France!
I am amused by the fact that all these grand titles in my heritage disappeared when my 4bx great grandmother became the illegitimate offspring of one of the subsequent generations. How the mighty are fallen!

Scotland / 18th century writing puzzle
« on: Tuesday 16 January 18 17:30 GMT (UK)  »
Hello,
I have just downloaded the Testament Dative of my ancestor Andrew Ramsay. it is dated 1714, and although I have managed to decipher quite a lot of it, the three words I have circled elude me completely. They turn up several times, so I think I need to know. Can anyone help me, please?
Many thanks.

Midlothian / William Thorburn 1799 + Marion Lee or Margaret Sanderson
« on: Wednesday 11 February 15 11:04 GMT (UK)  »
My problem is that I have been in touch with someone whose tree leads back to the same person as mine - but with different spouses!
From my tree: William Thorburn, b. Penicuik 1799, m. Margaret Sanderson in 1826, in Edinburgh. He was a currier. Their children were:
Margaret b. 1829
Elizabeth b. 1833
James     b. 1833
Peter      b.  1835
William   b.  1837
Jane       b.  1842
Agnes    b.  1846

The only birth I can find (in Scotland's People) is 1799, Penicuik, parents James Thorburn and Janet Hogg.

At the same time, my correspondant's tree is as follows:
William Thorburn, b. Penicuik, 1799, m. Marion Lee in 1819 in Edinburgh Parish. He was an upholsterer.
Their children:
George Lee         b. 1820
John Farquarson b. 1822
William                b. 1824
Agnes                 b. 1824
Robert Hogg       b. 1827
These names seem to follow the Scottish Naming Pattern.
I can find no other William b. 1795 - 1810 who would fit either family, yet clearly they have to be two different people.
Any clues?

Fife / Pearman/Lourie St Nonance, Fife
« on: Friday 04 April 14 14:35 BST (UK)  »
My great-grandmother, Jemima Pearman, was born 28 October 1831, 'begat in fornication', of Catherine Lourie and James Pearman, and baptised 18 December 1831. I understand that Catherine and James would have had to appear before the church court, and that there would have been a record of the outcome of this kept in the church records. Is there anyone out there who has access to these records, or knows whether they are still in existence? Both their names appear on my grandparents' marriage lines, but I know that James was postmaster in Barbadoes,  that Catherine married a John Souness in 1836, and that she died in 1848. Not a happy life, I am guessing! I would really like to know more about Jemima's birth, and would be grateful for any information or leads.
many thanks.
