Herts Completed Lookup Requests / Tring, Hertford - Annie Cato
« on: Tuesday 31 May 05 18:32 BST (UK)  »
Hi, first visit to Hertfordshire forum and I'm hoping you will be able to help!

I am trying to find the birth of Annie Cato who married George Shakespeare in 1861 at St John the Baptist Church in Shoreditch.  In 1881, Annie is listed on the census as born in Tring, Herford with an approximate age of 40.
This is the family in 1881:
George SHAKESPEARE   Head   M   Male   45   Ashley, Leicester, England   Compositor
Annie SHAKESPEARE   Wife   M   Female   40   Tring, Hertford, England
George SHAKESPEARE   Son   U   Male   18   London Hoxton , London, Middlesex, England   Gas Fitter
William SHAKESPEARE   Son      Male   16   London Hoxton , London, Middlesex, England   Shop Lad
Arthur SHAKESPEARE   Son      Male   14   Kentish Town   Shop Lad
Henry SHAKESPEARE   Son      Male   12   Kentish Town   Scholar   (this is my gt grandfather)
Charles SHAKESPEARE   Son      Male   7   Kentish Town   Scholar

I cant find her in any BMD site with various spellings of both first and second names.  Is Tring in Hertford (geography not a strong point!)

Hoping someone can help!

US Lookup Requests / A Long Shot! Joseph Hackett b1834. Did he emigrate?
« on: Saturday 28 May 05 09:17 BST (UK)  »
As I say, this is a long shot, but I'm trying to ascertain if one of my ggt uncles emigrated to the US.

JOSEPH HACKETT b1834  Rowley Regis, Eng - married Sarah Ann Perry(?) in 1865 in Rowley Regis.
They disappear after that and the only Joseph I can find with the right birth year is in 1880 US census in Coventry, Ohio married to Ann.  The problem being it only says born in ENG for both? And no children...

As this is my first 'emigrant' Im not sure where/how to find shipping records etc.

Any help gratefully received!!

Glamorganshire / Brynterian House, Glais - is it still standing?
« on: Saturday 28 May 05 06:36 BST (UK)  »
My mum was evacuated during WW2 with her family from Birmingham.  Grandad worked for Henry Wiggins and they moved their operations to Swansea around 1940, taking alot of the workforce with them.
Mum and her parents were put up with Mr & Mrs Hopewell at Brynterian House, Glais, Nr Swansea.  I think it may have been a vicarage but not sure.
Can anyone tell me if it is still standing?  A photo would be great too!
Grandad was a member of the Home Guard there too. If anyone has any recollections or photos of the HG in Swansea, I would appreciate that too.

Im not sure it they were any better off in Swansea as the letters I have from my Gt Uncle, written at the time, mention alot of raids by the Germans.

The Lighter Side / Actual date of 1881 Census?
« on: Tuesday 24 May 05 06:50 BST (UK)  »
Does anyone know when the 1881 census was held - what month and day?  Ive been confused as I have 3 families in the same house and thought it to be a mistranscription. However, Ive just discovered a family member whose wife has both the other surnames (her mother & father) and had a child in 1881. Just wondered if they had all the rellies round on the day of the census to wet the baby's head!?

Warwickshire / Do you remember Dr Parry of Ward End, B'ham?
« on: Monday 23 May 05 15:41 BST (UK)  »
Hi,
wondered if anyone could shed some light on an obituary that was cut out of a paper that I found in a box of letters to my Nan. There is no clue to year or newspaper it is from, so our confusion is over why she had kept this cutting ??? Eyebrows were raised when it came to light as Parry is the surname I was born with but was then adopted...

Anyway, the details are:
"the death took place at his residence, Verona, Alum Rock Road, Ward End on Tuesday, of Dr A E Gordon Parry. The oldest son of Mr and Mrs Atkin E Parry, of Solihull, he was educated at Five Ways Grammar School and graduated at Birmingham University. He also took medical degrees in London.  About six or seven years ago he acquired a practise in Ward End. He was interested in social welfare work, especially among the young, and was a commissioner in the Scouts Movement for Ward End District. He was also an examiner in first aid for the Boys Brigade. Dr Parry, who was 32 years of age, was an enthusiastic golfer, being a memeber of the North Warwickshire Club ans was also a memeber of the Castle Bromwich Flying Club. He was a Freemason, belonging to the Lodge of Hope.  He leaves a widow, a daugher and a little son."

There is also a smaller cutting which gives the address of his parents as Dovehouse Lane, Solihull plus where he was interred - Hampton in Arden Church.

Does anyone remember him or know when this was.

Wales / Rhondda - which county? any census!
« on: Sunday 22 May 05 18:15 BST (UK)  »
Hi,
Where would the Rhondda be in relation to the 1881 census counties.  Im trying to locate my gt grandfather and his ancestors and all I have is:
Herbert Davis born c1875.  He married Elizabeth Whittle in 1893 in Stourbridge, Worcs/Staffs. He was in the army, though not WW1, but the photo is very poor, I cant see which regiment but it was definately Welch, possibly Welch Regiment.  I havent been able to locate him in 1881 as we arent sure if he was born in the Rhondda or his father was born there. He is probably known by his second name as the only marriage between an Elizabeth Whittle and Herbert Davies is under a William Herbert Davies.  Plus there could be spelling differences with Davies/Davis.

To give me a starting point, it would be nice to narrow down the search to a particular county!
Many thanks if you can help.

The Lighter Side / Watsons of Anywhere - Help please! Argh!
« on: Friday 20 May 05 22:22 BST (UK)  »
A conundrum.
I am trying to start a tree for a friend based on her known information but have barely got past her birthday before Ive hit a brick wall...!

Her father's name is Kenneth Watson bn early 20th century Cornwall.  Mother's name is Violet Hull born similar time Lincs.  They married at St Mary's in Peterborough.  She has never seen a birth certificate and is a little 'confused' as to us not being able to find ANYTHING relating to Hulls in Stamford or Watsons in Mylor Creek in any census or BMD index.
My friend was born in Lowick, Northants 'at home'.

Kenneth's mother's name was Laura, father was Frederick. Laura died when Kenneth was 3 years old and Fred remarried to a Florence.
Violet's mother was Harriett who married Sidney Wilgrove of London when Harriett was about 45 ish. (Harriett may not be legitimate, therefore).  Sidney brought two sons to the family, Sidney & Fred.

Any info or guidance would be gratefully received!

Many thanks,
