Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Identify Victorian photo and inscription
« on: Sunday 17 September 23 10:28 BST (UK)  »
A friend who is in his mid 90’s has four beautiful Victorian miniature paintings, one of which had some writing on the back of the original frame which might help to identify the family. If he can do so he would be happy to consider reuniting the descendants with the miniatures, which are quite lovely. I attach the one with the writing on the reverse, which is only partially legible and reads “John xxxxxx” then what looks like “47 yrs  xxxxxx  Dumfriesshire”
Its a long shot but if anyone recognises this man or can add to the interpretation of the wooden back to the photo perhaps he / she could get in touch.

Argyllshire / Riddle of Angus McGougan death and probate records
« on: Saturday 29 July 23 22:04 BST (UK)  »
Wondering if someone can shine a light in this issue.
Angus McGougan, born 27 Sept 1878 in Campbeltown, married Marion McKay, b. 1877, in Oct 1908 in Ayr.
I've found two probate records for an Angus McGougan who died in 1939
1940. 1) McGougan, Angus of 1 Argyle Place, Prestwick, died 18 Oct 1939. Confirmation of Marion McKay or McGougan widow. Sealed London 26th July.
1942. 2) McGougan, Angus, of 1 Argyle Place, Prestwick, died 18 October 1939. Confirmation of Christina McKay McKinven and William Shaw solicitor. Sealed Llandudno 21 February . Former Confirmation Sealed London 26th July 1940. (Marion had a sister Christina but I have her marrying a James McKay, not McKinven, so another question there).
The England & Wales National Index of Wills and Administrations lists the probate place as Prestwick, Northumberland - I assume that is incorrect as he lived in Prestwick, Ayrshire for much of his later life.
I cannot find a definitive death record and am puzzled by the two different probates / confirmations and one in Llandudno and the other in London.
Any ideas?

Canada / Marriage record Malcolm McGougan and Euphemia Brodie
« on: Thursday 05 August 21 16:50 BST (UK)  »
Can anyone help, please? I am trying to find the marriage record of Malcolm McGougan (or McGugan or McGagan) born Gigha, Scotland in 1840, sailed to Canada sometime between 1867 and 1872 and married Euphemia Brodie, probably in Ekfrid township Middlesex County Ontario in c. 1844 and censuses show her as Brodie in Ontario in 1851, 1861 and '71. Son Hugh was born in 1872 so I am assuming the marriage was before then. All six children were born in Ekfrid township, Middlesex county, Ontario. they seemed to be big church (Free Presbyterian) people so I am assuming they did get married.

Argyllshire / McCallum - McMurchy birth and marriage dates
« on: Wednesday 04 March 20 21:46 GMT (UK)  »
My Gt Gt Grandfather was Donald McCallum, b. approx 1806 in Killean, Argyllshire. (Died 2 March 1878 gravestone records age at death as 72.) His brother Duncan's christening record shows that their parents were Edward McCallum and Janet McMurchy and I have confirmation of this from a family letter and the gravestone for Janet as his mother. However, despite diligent searching on Scotland's people I cannot find any record of either Donald's dob or that of Edward or Janet, or their marriage or date of death. Can anyone help, please?

World War One / Trying to find Leonard John Moseley in WW1 records
« on: Friday 03 January 20 21:22 GMT (UK)  »
I'm trying to find out about Leonard John Moseley's WW1 record. Born 26 Nov 1897 in Iping, Sussex, married Jan 1937 in Surrey. The only early photo we have is of him wearing a Pith Helmet, in casual clothes, and on the back is written "Jubblepore 1917" This may well have been Jubbulpore in India.
In the 1939 Register he was described as John Moseley, living in Harrow as an Aircraft Fitter.
This is all the information I have on him, no military number, regiment or even the service, but family are adamant he served, maybe also in Mesopotamia. I know many WW1 records were destroyed, and there are snippets on several L J Moseley's that I found through Ancestry but I cannot prove any of them are him. So before I give up I was wondering if anyone had any ideas that might take me further.

Other Countries / Duncan MacTavish 1842 - 1926
« on: Friday 04 October 19 20:31 BST (UK)  »
Duncan's gravestone is in Lyme Regis, England, and is inscribed with the words "THE CHIEF" of Naravangani, East Bengal. Duncan had been born in Boleskin, Inverness, was a railway clerk in Scotland before emigrating to India, married Blanche Hogg in Kidderpore and had several children there. His brother, William Burnett MacTavish was first President of the Caledonian Society of Calcutta. I would dearly like to know what Duncan did in India and why he was honoured with the nickname "The Chief".

« on: Friday 26 July 19 21:48 BST (UK)  »
Can anyone help with finding a death certificate for Robert Jack Baxter, born 15th April 1911 in Queensland, Australia, died 4 Feb 1922 in Queensland, Australia. I would like to establish the cause of death, was it by any chance polio?
