Hi everyone,
Wondering if somebody could tell me what the 'A' means in the margin of this baptism record I've found?
Thanks,
Amy

Hi everyone,
I'm wondering if someone can assist me in finding a burial record for this little one:
Cornelius Desmond, aged 1 and 10 months. Where Buried: Private.
He died in St George in the East workhouse infirmary.
(He is second from the bottom on attached image)
Document was found on Ancestry http://search.ancestry.com.au/search/db.aspx?dbid=1559
Tower Hamlets > St George in the East Union, Stepney > 1907 > Page 12 of 17.
If he is my relative (which I think he is) his mother's name is Ellen Desmond nee Brian and father is John Desmond.
If anyone could find a baptism or something for him too, that would be amazing. I would love to know more about his family.
Thank you kindly to anyone who is able to assist. I look forward to discussing this further with any interested parties.
Amy.

The Common Room / 400 pounds left in will in 1881, but family is poor?
« on: Sunday 17 August 14 13:22 BST (UK)  »
Hello all,

I've recently received the death certificate of a Cornelius Brian, coal whipper/porter/heaver. (My as yet unconfirmed ggg-grandfather). His wife was in and out of workhouses and eventually died in the St George in the East Infirmary in 1907, and their son's family were very poor and frequented workhouses and their daughter lived in one of the 'filthy, vile' black coloured streets according to Charles Booth's survey. I need some help understanding this sequence of events.

I have his death certificate from 1881, he died on 17th March, aged 38. Tonight I found a probate record for him, (death dates match exactly), although I hadn't really been looking for one because I assumed they were too poor. But it seems he left a lot of money to his wife Ellen... 400 pounds. Wasn't 400 pounds a lot of money back then? And if so then why was his son living in poverty? Where does a coal whipper get that kind of money?

Thanks for reading, I hope some of you can shed some light on this situation for me.

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Infirmary deaths, note in margin
« on: Sunday 17 August 14 09:13 BST (UK)  »
Can anyone tell me what the writing at the top of this page says?
I think it is referring to Joseph Jones alias Hawthorne.

On another note, I have found another person in the St George in the East deaths register in the same year who also had 'alias Hawthorne' written next to her name. Does this seem strange to anyone else? Is it possible they are somehow linked? What does the word 'alias' usually imply?

I appreciate any help, thank you everyone.

The Common Room / Certificates from GRO
« on: Wednesday 30 July 14 04:34 BST (UK)  »
Hi there,

I order a lot of certificates from GRO in England, but because I don't order 'priority' (too expensive) it takes about 15 days or something before the certificate even gets dispatched and I'm in Australia so I don't get the certificate for about a month or so after I order it.

I'm wondering if anyone else has any ideas of a quicker way? I already enter the GRO reference number which I know makes it faster. I don't mind paying the money, it's the waiting that gets me.

Cheers.

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Help Reading Occupation on 1871 Census
« on: Thursday 24 July 14 12:32 BST (UK)  »
Looking for Cornelius Brian's occupation. I don't know the first word, I see "Lab" following it which is obviously labourer. His wife below him is a Hawker of Vegetables. And their son has been transcribed as Samuel but I think the name might actually be Jeremiah? What does everyone think? Thank you in advance. Amy.

Hi there,

I live in Australia so I'm unable to attend the LMA personally. As I'm sure you all know, it is very expensive to have an employee of the Archives to do lookups for you, and so I was wondering if anyone on here would be willing to help?

I have looked at the LMA catalogue and know which records I wish to search, both on microfilm. I'm trying to find more info on my great-great grandfather's family, from Carshalton Children's Infirmary admission/discharge registers.

I would appreciate any response and thank you for your time.

Armed Forces / Advice on military searches
« on: Wednesday 29 January 14 20:08 GMT (UK)  »
Hello there,

Does anybody know different ways of finding whether your ancestor served in the military (army or navy) other than searching military documents on findmypast or ancestry? Are there indexes of names somewhere perhaps?

Thank you.

Essex Lookup Requests / Burial search please?
« on: Tuesday 21 January 14 13:26 GMT (UK)  »
Hi there,

I want to find out where my gg grandparents are buried. They died in 1951 and 1962, both deaths registered in Romford, Essex. I live in Australia and so don't have access to the physical resources for finding burials. I have not really looked online either because I don't know where to look. Help would be greatly appreciated. I would love a photo of the headstone if one exists, but I shall cross that bridge when I come to it. Here are their details:

Cornelius O'Brien, died 1951 (aged 72).
His wife, Ellen Rebecca O'Brien, died 1962 (aged 78).

Hope to hear something soon.

Kindest regards,

Amy.
