Many listers will know Orielbenfro and all the help he has given freely on this forum.

Sadly Owen Vaughan passed away on Friday, January 9th, after a long fight with cancer. He will be greatly missed.

Pembrokeshire Lookup Requests / Marriage of Theophilus Morgan c1786, Narberth area
« on: Thursday 19 September 13 22:44 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

I am looking for the marriage of Theophilus Morgan of Llangan before 1787. Nothing shows in the Carmarthenshire records so he possibly married in Lampeter or Llanddewi Velfrey. His family was later associated with Lampeter Velfrey, his son living at Kilrhiw. The first child I am sure of was baptised at Henllan in 1787, but as Theophilus was born c1756 the marriage could be as early as 1780.

Thanks,

Rhosgoch

I found this reference to Theophilus Morgan in the "History of the Welsh Independent Churches" - Henllan Amgoed Chapel -

Theophilus Morgan, neu fel y gelwid ef yn gyffredin "Hoffi y Gof," oedd gymeriad tra rhagorol. Bu ef byw yn hir ar ol y ddau a enwyd o'i flaen, er iddynt gychwyn agos yr un amser. Yr oedd yn un o'r engreifftiau a allesid gael o ddyn yn gwneyd y goreu o'r ddau fyd. Gof ydoedd wrth ei gelfyddyd, ac ni byddai byth yn segur. Os digwyddai na byddai neb yn yr efail yr oedd y Bibl ganddo yn wastad ar y pentan, a darllenai o hono wrth chwythu y tan ; a phan y deuai rhywun i mewn dechreuai ymddiddan am yr hyn a ddarllenwyd ganddo. Byddai ei ymddiddanion yn wastad yn adeiladol a buddiol, os nad bob amser yn grefyddol ; ac yn y cyfeillachau eglwysig wrtho ef y disgwylid yn benaf. Yr oedd yn hoff iawn o gynghori pobl ieuaingc yn nghylch y ddau fyd ; a dywedai un a fu lawer yn ei gwmni na chlywodd ef yn dyweyd gair drwg am neb erioed yn ei gefn. Bu farw mewn oedran teg, Ionawr 19eg, 1845, yn 88 oed.

I've run it through Google Translate and have the gist of it, but it needs some tidying up. I know that "Hoffi yr Gof" for example means 'Hoffi the Blacksmith' (a nickname), not "Like the Blacksmith" as Google thinks. There are a few other words that make no sense at all. I would be grateful if someone can help.

I was looking for the baptism of Theophilus Morgan born c 1813 on FreeReg and found it in Henllan, with no parents names, except father's surname Morgan, and "Grandson of Theophilus Morgan, Blacksmith".
Obviously the grandfather was more important than the parents!

Regards,

Rhosgoch
