Cumberland / flimby graveyard
« on: Tuesday 11 February 14 13:50 GMT (UK)  »
This is a long shot, does Flimby have a grave yard cemetery for burials 1841-1851.

I am looking for a grave for Jonathan Irving b 1771, wife Elizabeth born 1768, son Jonathan b 1812 died at 8 days old.

The real interest in Jonathan, I am not having much luck with death certificates at the moment.

Thank you
Josephine

Cumberland / Irvings in Alston
« on: Monday 10 February 14 15:03 GMT (UK)  »
From IGI I have found a Jonathan irving in Alston, about 1770. My Jonathan Irving appears in Flimby
as married to Elizabeth Bell 1799, and on 1841 census as birth 1771. I cannot find an earlier record for Jonathan in Flimby pre 1799 and presumption is that he could have come from Alston. Are there any other Irvings in Alston, I think a George Irving in FLimby may have been his brother but again no proof.

Any help would be appreciated as I am a long way from Carlisle records office.

Thank you
Frances

Europe / De Ganay, Paris 1940's
« on: Friday 22 February 13 12:45 GMT (UK)  »
I am looking for any information on Diane De Ganay, born 1920 to Comte Bernard De Ganay, Paris. I think one of the large banking families. He died 1940 at family home in Arachon. Diane went to USA in 1947 and returned there in 1948 to marry William kitchel. On the passenger list she is down as divorced. Information on first marriage, any children?

Any ideas what would have happened to English employee, Eleanor Hill Irving, after 1940, we think she was interred by Vichy goverment, but where. Are there any lists?

Any help appreciated.

US Lookup Requests / Kitchel - Belmont, Mass.
« on: Friday 15 February 13 15:44 GMT (UK)  »
I am trying to trace a Mr/Mrs  W R Kitchel, they lived at 97 Rutledge Road Belmont, Mass in 1965. I think they will now be in there 90's. I am interested in their housekeeper/ nanny Eleanor Irving, who died 06 November 1965.  There must be the next generation of children out there or several generations who may remember Eleanor. She was unmarried, came from Leyland, Lancashire, England.
She original worked for the family in France before the second world war, and then moved to Belmont with the daughter and her American husband.

She was my aunt, any help would be greatly appreciated.

US Lookup Requests / Searching for information on Eleanor Hill Irving
« on: Thursday 11 October 12 13:21 BST (UK)  »
I know Eleanor Hill Irving died in Boston 08 November 1965.
She went to America in 1944 as a nanny. Before World War II
she worked in Paris as a nanny, the daughter married am American
service man and she went to America with them to be a nanny to their family.
She spent the rest of her life with this family, and returned to England several times on holiday
to visit her sisters in Leyland, Lancashire.

I have been unsuccessful in finding a death notice or obituary, or even a last address.
Against all hope it would be great to make contact with the family she looked after.

Hope someone can help

South Africa / Matthew Hill Sheehan
« on: Friday 16 March 12 13:01 GMT (UK)  »
Drawing a bit of a blank with this and wonder if anyone can help.

Matthew Hill Sheehan born Maryport, Cumbria 1873, married Isabella Dores ? b1874/5 (don't know nationality)
but married before 1902.
5 daughters Isabella Jalvie Falconer b 1899, Margaret Hill b102, Natile b1905, Annie b1908, Kathleen b1911. These dates from passenger list returning from SA 1914 to Southampton. I cannot find English birth or marriage certificate.
Matthew did not travel with them but in 1915 set out for SA again. He spent his life there coming back to die in England in 1962. He was a fitter, and on death certificate foreman fitter. I have looked on church records in SA but drawn a blank.   Apparently although he stayed in SA he frequently came back to England to visit his family in Lancashire.

If anyone can help me fill in any gaps I would be very pleased to hear from them.

Australia / Robert IRVING
« on: Tuesday 14 February 12 17:39 GMT (UK)  »
I believe a Robert Irving, b 1831 Workington, Cumbria emigrated 1852/53 to Wedderburn, Victoria. I think I have found his passport application. Rumour has it he married an Elizabeth Williamson in 1863, they had at least one son William b 1875 who married and had 9 children, again one of them called William b 1900.

Robert died 1906 in Australia. I have looked at the Oz sites but cannot seem to find any records, which I expected to do as I have some dates.

If you can start me on the path or give me a resource to follow I would be most grateful.

Thank you for your help

Frances
