Derry (Londonderry) / Copies of Wills from PRONI
« on: Sunday 28 January 24 15:10 GMT (UK)  »
Hi there, I can see quite a few of my ancestors listed as having wills / probates etc on the will calendar but no image. Is there a way for me to contact PRONI to purchase a copy of the will in the hope it lists further information than what’s on the extract? There was an email address mentioned, if I wanted a search done - not sure if that’s the way to contact, or if there’s a form etc.

Also, I have dates of other relatives who died in the 70s and 80s that aren’t listed in the Will calendar but I’m hopeful they will have left a will, or something similar, as they had a lot of farmland which I know was inherited. Does a certain amount of time need to have passed from the ancestors death before I can request a search / copy? Any info gratefully appreciated!

Thanks
Lara

Donegal / St Baithins Church - headstone look up
« on: Monday 01 January 24 18:27 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all, happy new year  :)

I’ve managed to locate a few family members, who died in the 70s, who are listed as being buried at St Baithins Church in St Johnston. I found these on find a grave and have put in some photo requests (although there are only a small number of people monitoring the cemetery so may be some time).

I wondered if anyone would be near the area if they would be able to take a couple of photos in the meantime? I have the info from find a grave in terms of plot number etc.

I would love to be able to formally request a copy of their death records but I cannot for the life of me figure out how to do this (it may be I can’t, and that’s ok), it’s just the last of their families that I had connections to are no longer alive or dementia has sadly taken hold.

Thank you to anyone who can help  :)

Dublin / National Archives - Royal Irish Constabulary records
« on: Saturday 07 October 23 15:09 BST (UK)  »
Hello

I wonder if anyone could advise or guide me in the right direction. I had an ancestor, Thomas Ross (approx 1800 - 1865) who was a Borough Constable with the Irish Constabulary upon his death in 1865.  He was residing in Clooney, County Londonderry at the time.

I was advised there may be records I could look up at the National Archives re his time with the Irish Constabulary, but I think these would all be hard copies. Would anyone have any experience of searching these records, to know what (if any) information may be able to be found? I am unable to search in person as I don't live in Ireland.

Any guidance greatly appreciated.

Thank you

Canada / Lost ancestor - Lydia Ross
« on: Sunday 10 September 23 08:36 BST (UK)  »
Hi all, wonder if you could help me locate a ancestor that has evaded me for some time…

Lydia Ross (born 26th Feb 1871, Londonderry, Northern Ireland). As far as I know, never married.

In 1923, aged 52, she emigrated to Winnipeg, Manitoba to live with her nephew Joseph Watterson on his farm. Presumably she stayed with him or nearby for the remainder of her time…

Joseph Watterson died 9th September 1979 (still in Winnipeg) and was buried in Brookside Cemetery (with his spouse and family). Lydia would have passed away by this point but I cannot locate a death record, obituary, or any proof of residence anywhere.

Any help would be greatly appreciated - I’d love to finally put this ancestor to bed  :)

Derry (Londonderry) / Londonderry Sentinel 1850-1860s
« on: Sunday 08 May 22 16:04 BST (UK)  »
Hi there,

Any guidance greatly appreciated!

I found two entries of interest on https://www.cotyroneireland.com/surnames/ross3.html which says they are extracted from Personal Notices of Births, Marriages and Deaths Inserted in the Londonderry Sentinel.

I tried searching the Londonderry Sentinel online via British Newspapers Archive but was unable to located the mentioned entries, and wondered if there was any other way to search this online?

The entries of interest are:

Dec 9 1853 [Died] At Ballyowen, on the 4th inst., Lydia, the youngest daughter of Mr. James Ross  (Also listed a few entries down as Dec 16...)

Oct 19 1860 [Died] October 5, at her residence, Ballyowen, Martha, the beloved wife of Mr. James Ross, in the 71st year of her age

Before I contact the original poster (given the information was published on the website some years ago) I hoped to locate the information myself.

Thank you!

Canada / Anna Bella Colhoun / Clarke
« on: Thursday 11 March 21 21:20 GMT (UK)  »
Good evening,

My great great aunt Annabella Colhoun married Robert Clarke in Ireland and moved and lived the rest of their lives in Canada. The only information I know of her is she was born on 18th June 1896 in County Tyrone, Ireland and died 2nd November 1974 (I believe this information came from my late nana).  She was understood to have passed away while living in Willowdale in Toronto.  I am not sure where she is buried / if there is a headstone and I have no information on her husband Robert, or if they had children.  I would love to find out more information, but not sure if this is possible given it was only in the 1970s she passed away.  Of course, given the current pandemic, I appreciate this may be yet a further barrier...

Any advice would be greatly received.

Thank you in advance

Derry (Londonderry) / Joseph Ross and Matilda (?)
« on: Sunday 19 July 20 20:02 BST (UK)  »
Hi all,

I have a record of Joseph Ross marrying Matilda in Glendermott in July 1843 but it says Matilda’s surname is illegible, as is her fathers.

I’m trying to ascertain if anyone has access to this marriage record to see if her surname can be made out. I’m hoping to check if it is a Matilda McFarland (I’m trying to ascertain if it’s the same Matilda who had a child, Mary Ross, with her husband Joseph in 1848 in Ballyowen).

Thanks in advance!

Aberdeenshire / Help translating place of death
« on: Sunday 26 January 20 12:03 GMT (UK)  »
Hi there,

I have the following death record for a John Stewart, dying on 1st September 1918.  However, I just cannot identify the place name in Inverurie where he died.  The death was due to internal haemorraghing as the result of an accident, so I am wondering if it was where he worked?  He was a farm servant. His residence at the time of his death was 78 North Street, which he had lived in for quite some time.

I have looked at it for so long and tried so many variations, some fresh eyes would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you in advance.

Europe / Kreller family from Germany who emigrated for Canada
« on: Wednesday 14 August 19 10:59 BST (UK)  »
I am currently researching my friend's family.  Their surname is Kreller and are recorded as Johann Friedrich Kroeller and Katharina Herle in the 1851 Ontario Census for Canada.  They married in Germany, and had their first three children there:

Wilhem (William) Kreller abt. 1836
Margaret Kreller abt. 1837
Frederick Kreller 27 June 1840.

They arrived in Canada prior to their son Jacob being born June 1847 in Ontario.

Could anyone possibly advise if there is anyway I could locate the marriage details of Johann and Katharina or the birth details of the Johann, Katharina or their children?

Furthermore, could someone kindly advise on the likelihood their surname was indeed Kreller, while living in Germany?  On the 1851 Canadian census they were listed as Kroeller, and Groeller on the 1861 census, but I am unsure if it would have been spelled another way originally and this is an englified way of pronouncing/spelling their name.  They were of Lutheran religion.

I cannot locate them leaving Germany or arriving in Canada as passenger records do not appear to have been recorded then.

Any help or direction would be incredibly appreciated!

Thank you.
