Nottinghamshire / looking for online text of .....
« on: Wednesday 23 December 15 06:29 GMT (UK)  »
hi there,

I am seeking Grassthorpe, Normanton on Trent in the Phillimore Marriages volume....cannot seem to locate it on American Universities website.........   need to have complete version of book as need some entries from other churches mentioned.....  in PDF

Similiarly I am looking for Phillimores Marriages for Newark on Trent 1765 to 1836 as I have the castle and first portion........  preferably in PDF,     [ also looking for a transcript of St Margarets baptisms and deaths other than fs.o version]

also looking for any " Militia Lists " in pdf for any period...strange how I can find 4 for Northants but none for Notts.....

Also looking for PDF or Excel Parish Register Transcriptions of births, deaths and christenings of Normanton on Trent, Marnham and any surrounding villages.....

I am still chasing a transcribed copy of 1831 census for Newark on Trent irrespective of what details are contained within.........

Also interested in any directories or alamacs that have been digitally made ; other than ones that appear on historical directories website ......prefer any prior to 1840.

Next problem is that although Queen Elizabeth closed the Grassthorpe church in her reign ; does any one know of any information regarding the parish register from 1500 to 1600.   Most authors discuss the church being privatised into residence but not the fate of the register.   Also has anyone worldwide visited the old Grassthorpe church to photograph any remnants of gravestones or hatchments or gargiles etc......  which would make for an interesting website , not that I have inclination to make such......

Also I am looking for any transcriptions from Normanton on Trent or Marnham or North Clifton cemeteries or graveyards in a hope to identify some of the deaths in my cousins family lines.

I know its a big ask but none of the material  sought appears on ancestry or findmy past or subscription sites that I can see............  if you have material but dont wish others to know please do not hesitate to privately contact me via personal messaging.....

Yorkshire (West Riding) Lookup Requests / Major John Shergold Esq.
« on: Saturday 12 December 15 22:21 GMT (UK)  »
I have a brickwall where a certain amount of profiling has been done and then some relevent facts are missing...... always the way I suppose....

I am looking for the death/ or burial / or funeral notice /or age at death /or probate /or any other information regarding one Major John Shergold Esq of Conisbrough , Yorkshire West Riding.

The gentleman in question is found paying his taxes** between 1797 and 1802 for a property in Conisbrough which included a garden noted by the Gentlemans Magazine where a Roman Path was found to be under the former.  There is no entry for the chap in the 1820 Directory, but not surprising since out of the 1142 inhabitants only 23 are listed on the page for the town. Amongst those was Rev Henry Watkins vicar and his service period at St Peter may have some bearing to Major John Shergold esq but that is not confirmed.

We know that Major John Shergold Esq was of the Sherwood Rangers, Retford Regiment of Nottinghamshire serving under Sir Thomas Wollaston White, 1st Baronet and this is confirmed by several mentions in London Gazette as well as the Stamford Mercury and the available historical book about the History of the Sherwood Rangers. It is known that between 1802 and 1808 Mr John Shergold Esq received his ranks ie Lieutenant, Captain and Major.    As well there is a probate of the Baronet in the Nottinghamshire archives for which both Gentlemen are mentioned with John Shergold to become a beneficiary for a property for 500 years [ yes 500 years......   they do things with a mild sense of humour in Nottinghamshire and Lancashire as one of the Molyneux family members received a land grant from King Charles for 1000 years] . The Baronet died 1815 so Major John Shergold Esq is probably still alive in that year but again this has not been confirmed.  I dont expect that our John Shergold Esq was going to be alive in 2315 AD even though he would have been a mighty fit chap with all the recorded marching of the Regiment throughout England.

What also at this time has not been made clear is whether in fact both gentlemen went to Spain under Wellington to fight against forces of Napoleon but I will settle for any information regarding his death or burial  from the apparently transcribed burials of 1555 to 1931 St Peter Conisbrough; so his birthplace and genealogical structure can be determined.

**I would like to also point out that in the Tax records the place names of Strafforth and Tickhill were mentioned and have no idea to what end those two places which are some distance from Conisbrough would even be on the entries.

I would also be interested in any biographical entries in English published material ie National Biography which I do not have access to.

Thank you in advance for any contributions that come forth.

Marty Shergold

And Merry Christmas

Nottinghamshire / Newark Upon Trent 1st cousins family Killinger/ and variants
« on: Saturday 17 October 15 10:34 BST (UK)  »
At the moment I am working towards the reconstruction of events along the Trent River that appear to be my first cousins primary family structure.  As much as I taxed all the information I can gleam from anc, FindMyPast and fs.o there are lots of gaps even with entries from Notts Archives.
Please help with the following::
I am chasing a transcription of the 1811 census for Newark Upon Trent and the one link on the internet where I found such does not work coming up error 404 etc.

Also would someone enlighten me to a name , any name, and which site I can get to see the images or complete folio of the 1841 Newark Upon Trent census.

As well, apart from some very interesting sites and even pdfs found on this forum, I would like to get my hands on a complete burial transcript for the church in Newark..... understanding of course there are numerous... principally the Anglican burials or the Bishops transcripts version....   I have not had very much success with the piece meal efforts listed on "national burial index" and that is why I would like a complete list......   preferably in excel or pdf.

If you can help with these requests I would be grateful.

In addition I am also interested in any mercers lists from 1700 through to 1800 or any transcribed directories of the period.....   and a possible transcription of the Hearth Tax payees.....
Since one of the family owned a pub in the town I would be interested in any websites that may contain detailed information of a historical value as well....

I know its all a big big ask but as I discover this foundation family the story has been evolving at a great rate of knots.......

thankyou
marty

Hampshire & Isle of Wight / Winchester, Hants some missing material prior to 1800
« on: Saturday 26 September 15 23:47 BST (UK)  »
Hello,

As reported by two articles from the Hampshire Chronicle for January of 1787, and February of 1788 it seems my family was in Winchester at this time. As much as the structure for Winchester seems to be in tact of the John and Ann marriage post 1800 continuing through to the current day, my interest here lies in establishing the lineage prior . The two newspaper articles report a] the drowning of Mary Shergold from being intoxicated in early January of 1787; and then her husband is reported b] Robert has an apoplectic fit in February 1788. We know from the articles that they were man and wife.
Firstly I would like to , if at all possible, find the burial for each person of this marriage. Secondly I would like to know about "St Johns House" which is mentioned in the article and if at possible a map that may show where this was.

From later records of a non conformist nature one Henry died post 1800 with a second person also of a non conformist record which suggests to me that Robert and Mary may have had children; one of which could have been Henry. So thirdly I would like to investigate any baptisms and marriages of Robert and Mary through to any children the couple may have had.
Because my genealogy tree starts with a chart of John and Ann, somewhere I would assume that Henry and his wife or wives had children which may include John. Of course I may be totally off base and Henry came from elsewhere as with John ; but; the census of John indicated that he was of Winchester.

Given that not all burials were microfilmed for Winchester this may be an uphill battle or brickwall to begin with,, however, I have confidence that somewhere there are transcripts done of at least the microfilms in the period 1780 to 1850 for one parish with some burials possibly available for the other microfilm of Winchester College spanning 1678 til 1903... but I dont know who has them or where they might be found but they certainly don't appear on the subscription sites we are accustomed to using. In fact very little appears even after 1800 for marriages and baptisms.
Maybe entries appear on disc that I am not aware of but either way I need assistance to find any entry prior to 1800 for the city of Winchester regardless of which of the ten churches the family may  have used. I do know that St Maurice, and, St Thomas with St Clement were frequented post 1800 so maybe the entries appear there.......

Again, the spelling variation of the family name Shergold may be anything from Shergool, Shargold or some other form....

thank you

Hampshire & Isle of Wight / Chirrieholme of Bishopstoke Hants
« on: Sunday 13 September 15 09:10 BST (UK)  »
An interesting surname has popped up in my family tree and upon some research in vain cannot seem to progress the tree much further than what I have.
The surname Cherryholme also spelt Chirrieholme is probably back in history related to the placename near Selby in Yorkshire and certainly a lot of records do appear for the name on the fs.o. for Yorkshire.
However, I am interested in one particular branch in Hampshire.

To date a few obscure entries appear not only on FindMyPast but on knightsroots and roughly I will indicate that structure

One Mr John [ Johes or Johannes ] Cherrieholme was the rector or curate of Bishopstoke , and this is clarified by the transcription of the marriages for the period abt 1704 until 1728.
Elsewhere John is said to have been in Holy Orders from about 1662 pretty much until his death and burial 30th of January 1732 recorded as Southampton Holy Rood or Bishopstoke parish depending on where the resource is found.
His two sons that we know of John and Marmaduke are buried 31st October 1689 and 4th of March 1694 respectively, at Bishopstoke.
The parish transcription of Bishopstoke shown by knightroots shows three marriages whereas FindMyPast shows one of the good rector marrying off his kinfolk and from the transcription discribes them as such:

"1686 Jan 6th John Taylor of Winton & Judith Chirrieholme of this parish"  and
" Mr George Shergold of the town & county of Southon & Mrs Elizabeth Chirrieholme were marryed April 21 1712".
" Mr John Clement & Mrs Mary Chirrieholme marryed at Durley January 2nd 1721 by me    JC"

And finally from reference to a grant probate of 8th April 1721 of one Thomas Cherryholme of Portsmouth , George Shergold recieved the endowment.

From other records I know that George was a Mercer but as to the births, baptisms, prior marriages of not only the rectors children [John , Marmaduke etc] or marriage but as to whom the other persons [ Mrs Elizabeth, Judith, Mrs Mary] connect.
I would also be interested to know if the family appears in Burkes Landed Gentry or the Visitations and any extracts would be appreciated.

I have tried to find any other records such as baptisms and marriages but havent had much luck so any help will be appreciated no matter what the snipet may be..... The family must have made an impact in Bishopstoke as there is even a road named after them. thankyou

Wiltshire / Downton mystery....
« on: Tuesday 08 September 15 10:18 BST (UK)  »
Although there is sufficient evidence of the following family for a brief period, some things remain a mystery....
Heres what I have>

Benjamin Shergold [sometimes spelt Shergell] married Elizabeth Munday [ sometimes spelt Mundy]
on the 16th of November 1828 at Downton. The couple had issue of Charles born 28th April 1832 and baptised on 10th May 1832 being about 2 weeks old ; George christened 3rd of March 1830 about 3 months old and James Thomas christened 3.7.1834. Depending on which sources one uses these children appear at St Edmunds Church St Wesleyan Salisbury or Salisbury Methodist.
The 1841 census shows the family as such>

Benjamin Shugarts   53 ag lab
Elizabeth Shugarts   46
Sarah Shugarts   16
William Shugarts   13
George Shugarts   11
Charles Shugarts   9
James Shugarts   7
jacob Down 80 pauper y

The census shows the family with Jacob Down being related in one form or another to Benjamin., and upon reading the image is actually Shergold.

From inspection the family escaped from the mass exodus to Canada aboard the King William but I am finding it difficult to see any of the family from 1841 onwards.
So if someone with some time would find the family in 1851 etc....... it would be appreciated.
I am also interested in any structuring that gives passage for the Mundy / Munday family as it seems there are a few Shergolds marrying into the surname.
Thank you

« on: Monday 31 August 15 01:04 BST (UK)  »
William Thompson [whose father named the same with an occupation of weaver], aged 54 being a widower of Portsmouth married 29th of November in 1881. His wife was Ann Shergold nee Gray also a widow was the daughter of Charles Gray a glovercutter.
[ referred to as page 240 no 479] with witnesses John & Annette Maria.......

Heres the problem.....

1. I cant find the certificate reference number.
2. I cant find the Gray to Shergold marriage
3. I cant find any census or DOB or DODs for anyone in the whole group.

Please enlighten me to some information to unravel the mystery........    my thought was maybe Ann was born Gray then married, then remarried to a Shergold then married again to Thompson???
But to be honest I wouldnt have a clue....

Thanks.
