Hampshire & Isle of Wight / Dowse/Douse of Hampshire, England
« on: Friday 20 July 18 03:33 BST (UK)  »
I'm trying to find out more about the Dowse family. My 3rd gr grandmother was a Mary Anna Dowse (m. Charles Horner). I was able to trace the family back to my 10th gr grandparents, Simon Douse and Prudence Ringe, married June 1628 at Saint Swithun Over Kingsgate, Winchester, and descended through their son Cuthbert. The family seems to have been based in Bishop's Waltham for a long time. Does anyone have any history about the family?

Scotland / Language help? 16-17th century

Help!  I'm looking to find out what a name is from my family tree.  I'm not sure if the origin is Gaelic or simply old Scotch, and spelling in those days wasn't a sure thing, a lot of phonetics abounded.  The name is Lawchwarit and it was the maiden name of my 11th gr grandmother who appears to have been born in Berwickshire.  I had a mini epiphany lately that perhaps Lawch might have been Loch but I'm still stuck on the warit part.  It would also be nice to know what the name might have become with the advent of regular spelling.  If specifics are needed, my ancestress was Janet Lawchwarit, b. ~1612, and she ended up married to Patrik Geillies (Gillies).  TIA!

Europe / Place question please

You know how you get different answers on where a person was born, maybe one was the formal name, another may have been the small, local name?  I think I just ran into that.  Does anyone know what Gros Krotz...burg, Germany might have been?  It was on a NY marriage register in the 1880's.  TIA!

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Help - 19th century German script
« on: Wednesday 23 August 17 04:19 BST (UK)  »
I have a death certificate for my 4th gr grandfather Edward Bahruth, died 1891 in Hamburg, Germany.  It's in rather good condition but I (and a Swiss cousin) am having a lot of difficulty with the script, and it has to be made worse by the fact German throws extra 'things' on their letters.  Could someone please help?  I'm looking for as complete and literal a translation as possible.  I'm rather hoping there will be names and identities of family members on it so I can go further back with my family tree.  TIA!

I tried to attach a .tiff photo.  It is 538 KB and the limit is 500 KB.  Please let me know if you want to try it, I will gladly email it directly.

Hampshire & IOW Lookup Requests / Portsmouth & Portsea
« on: Wednesday 28 December 16 00:54 GMT (UK)  »
I have been having some trouble with a branch of my mother's paternal family.  Her gr grandmother was Blanche Frances Humby (m. Horner).  For the longest time I was stymied with her parentage until by chance I found she was born to Mathew Humby and Caroline Short.  I had previously thought she was born to Elizabeth Humby / Jones but it appears as though she was paternal aunt, not mother.  By census info they were born in Portsmouth, Mathew ~1824 and Elizabeth ~1817.  I cannot find birth records for the anywhere, and I mean that literally - I completely cleared our any and all location filters and still couldn't find birth/christening records anywhere in the world (familysearch.org).  Can someone help me figure out where they were born, specific dates, parentage etc.?  Blanche had 3 siblings I could find in records, but it appears the parents died early and the surviving kiddies bounced around between other family.  She started with a maternal aunt Elizabeth Gould before settling in for the duration with paternal aunt Elizabeth Jones, even to the point of being shown as daughter Blanche Jones in census records.  It would mean a lot if more could be figured out on the Humby side.  TIA!

United States of America / Searching NY - RI 1876-1908

I'm trying to trace a family member.  Anna Partheymuller married Andrew Wich in Manhattan, December 3, 1876.  They had gotten to Providence, RI by the time their daughter Stephanie was born in 1907; she died in Portsmouth, RI in early 1908.  I'd like to fill in where they were and what they were doing between those dates, if there were any other children, and hopefully where they got to after Stephanie died.

Fermanagh / Looking for marriage register, 1847
« on: Thursday 04 July 13 00:14 BST (UK)  »
I've been looking for the marriage register of Mary Gardiner (b. 1830 Westmeath) and Peter Swindles (b. 1807/8 Macclesfield) and having no luck.  They're supposed to have been married in Lowtherstown, Fermanagh in 1847.  I'm hoping for a full entry as I'm looking for Peter's parents.

Renfrewshire / William & Archibald Gardiner, Glasgow 1851
« on: Wednesday 03 July 13 23:19 BST (UK)  »
I'm looking for William & Archibald Gardiner, children of William Gardiner and Jane Forrester.  William (b. ~1842) and Archibald (b. ~1845) would most likely have been born either in Westmeath or Lowtherstown, Ireland.  Their father died at an unknown date between 1845-61, and they were living with their widowed mother in Glasgow as of the 1861 census.  Mother Jane died 1889 in Glasgow and older sister Mary (m. names Swindles and Anderson) took over as matriarch until her death in 1893.  It is unknown if they continued in the UK past the 1861 census, returned to Ireland, or emigrated elsewhere.

Westmeath / William Gardiner, abt 1790
« on: Wednesday 03 July 13 22:58 BST (UK)  »
I'm looking for firm(er) dates, places, parents & siblings for William Gardiner, estimated birth year 1790, lived in Westmeath, known to have married Jane Forrester abt 1829 (?).  Known children were Mary (b. 1830), William (b. 1842), and Archibald (b. 1845).  Died between 1845-61 as his wife was listed as a widow in the 1861 Glasgow census, the two boys with her then.  If alive at daughter Mary's wedding, he probably lived at Lowtherstown in 1847.
