Fife / Rev Peter Taylor of Ceres
« on: Saturday 21 July 18 19:39 BST (UK)  »
He was born in Cairneyhill in 1773 and married Rachel Sutherland in 1806.

Any information on him would be most appreciated, especially how he went from being a Weaver's son to a Rev and how he was able to acquire lands in Cairneyhill.

Scotland / Valuation rolls references question
« on: Wednesday 18 July 18 23:14 BST (UK)  »
Hi
For a property, will it have the same reference in every valuation roll. For instance if I find my house in 240, number 5. Will it be on the same reference in each volume? or does it change if the village gets bigger etc?

Scotland / Researching a property using Sasines
« on: Thursday 12 July 18 22:55 BST (UK)  »
Sorry if I am posting in the wrong forum. Not sure which one to post in. Have done my family tree I am now researching my house which I believe dates back to the 18th Century. I have contacted Registers of Scotland who, for a fee, provided me with the "Sasine search sheets" from 1879 until the 90s when it became part of the Land Register.

I believe NRS has records dating back to the 17th Century. How easy would it to be to find my house using the information I have already. The problem is that until recently my house had no number and there seems to be no common reference number on the search sheets I have.

Any help would be appreciated.

England / May Holt (actress)/Abortionist?
« on: Sunday 05 November 17 21:39 GMT (UK)  »
Does anyone have more/further information on the above and a date of death?

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/May_Holt

She was born in 1849, the daughter of actor Clarance Holt. She played Eponine in an early theatrical version of Les Miserables. According to the book Fifty Years of Make Believe she  "was the antithesis of her mother, up to date, young, more than pretty and with advanced ideas on the conduct of woman. She read French novels, smoked cigarettes on the sly and played the principal "boys parts'' in burlesque."

She married Reginald Fairburn in 1880 and quit acting. She then wrote her own plays including Every Man For Himself and Waiting Consent. She sometimes used the name Mrs R Fairbairn. She had a daughter named Ada. She moved to Australia for a bit in the 1880s and had success there as did her brother Bland Holt, who became very popular.

Little is written about her activity in the 1890s but according to the below article she is the same person as Madame Harpur, a notorious abortionist:
http://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/page/839061

The below article stays the same and castigates a newspaper for confusing her with daughter of Bland Holt, reaffirming she is actually his sister.
http://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/148073554?searchTerm=%22may%20holt%22%20%22bland%20holt%22&searchLimits=exactPhrase|||anyWords|||notWords|||requestHandler|||dateFrom|||dateTo|||sortby

The full story of "Madame Harpur" is told here:
http://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:u26SPUAPkmMJ:www.sahistorians.org.au/175/bm.doc/madam-harpur-the-trials-and-tribulations-of-an-adelaide-doctoress.doc+&cd=1&hl=en&ct=clnk&gl=uk

The last mention in any Australian newspapers I can find on the Trove site is in 1909 after her most recent court case.

The article has no further information on her whereabouts after 1909. It also states she and her husband parted ways after a rocky relationship yet they both appear as husband and wife on the 1911 census on Ancestry:

Residence
02 Apr 1911 • Great Clacton, Essex, England
Age: 57; Marital Status: Married; Relation to Head of House: Wife
1 Source

Another conundrum is that the above article states that "Her partner was known as Samuel Brierly, Dr Brierly Fairburn, Dr Brierly and Dr Fairbairn.". This Dr died in 1898 according to the article yet Ancestry states Reginald Fairburn died in 1921.

Her father Clarance Holt, who was known for productions of Les Miserables and Count of Monte Cristo, died in 1903.

Any ideas? Thanks for Allister for his help on this and other Australian actors/actresses.

England / Charles Dillon (actor)
« on: Sunday 26 March 17 22:47 BST (UK)  »
Hi
I am doing some research on the stage Actor-Manager Charles Dillon. His Wikipedia article can be found at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charles_Dillon_(actor-manager)

According to articles found in the NYT and other archives he was born in Dias Suffolk in 1819. He died on a trip to Hawick on 27 June 1881.

The articles regarding his death state he was married to Clara Conquest and they had a daughter also called Clara. Clara Conquest died on 4 July 1888, in Portsmouth aged 63.

However Charles Dillon frequently acted with a woman named Bella Mortimer who regard as one of the great actresses of her day. Bella died on 28th May 1886 in Hull aged 40 and was referred to as "Mrs Charles Dillon", the wife of the late actor.

Now one would suppose Dillon married Clara after Bella died especially since the article reporting Charles Dillon's death refers to Clara as his "widow" and residing at West Hartlepool with daughter Clara but an article written shortly after his death states "
"A subscription has been opened by the executors of the late Charles Dillon, for the benefit of his widow, better known as Miss Bella Mortimer, and children"

Anyone have advice or further leads?

Robert

Scotland / Help finding birth of William Grandison - Edinburgh
« on: Sunday 14 September 14 22:29 BST (UK)  »
William Grandison was the brother of my Great Grandmother Elizabeth.

He died in the USA in 1968. His gravestone said he was born on 11 Nov 1885.

His parents were David Grandison and Mary (M.S Whyte). David and Mary married in 1889. David was 41 when he married. In the 1881 census David was in Liberton, Midlothian, Scotland living with his sister's family. In the 1891 census he was in Beath and was the head of the household. William was listed as being 5 years old.

The obituary for William said he was born in Edinburgh.

There is one birth for William Grandison on Scotland's people for 1885. It has the wrong date and lists his father as Peter so it cannot be correct.

Any ideas?

Scotland / help with marriage of Nikka Mohamed
« on: Wednesday 27 August 14 23:40 BST (UK)  »
Nikka was the brother of my grandfather Ali Mohamed. He died in 1935. His death certificate mentions he was married but I cannot dechiper the name. Could it be that he married before he came to Scotland? There are no Mohameds in the 1911 census so I assume they came here after that.

If anyone wants to assist, here is a small snapshot of the name of his wife from the death certificate.
