I have just found this chap married to one of my relies. and it looks like he was deported to Tas. for 10 yrs. He married Elizabeth Kirkland, in Stewarton in 1824, and it loooks like they had 2 sons named John, one born in 1831 born in England, the second John was born in 1837 in Stewarton.
Their father Matthew Gray Caskie seems to have left the family before the 41 Census, as Elizabeth, his wife, (Occ. Sewer) is in Stewarton with the 2 boys, John Caskie, , born c.1831 in England and John Caskie, born 1837, is born in Stewarton
In the 51 Census, Elizabeth has reverted back to her maiden name, ( Occ.Embrioder & master sewer), and has only one child with her, John , Bonnet Knitter, born 1837 Stewarton.
I have found A Matthew Gray Caskie, aboard "Mount Stuart Elphinstone" Convict No: 12463. He was sentenced on 13 Feb 1843 and arrived in Tasmania in 1845. He was apparently sentenced 10 yrs .I have also found his date of death,27 08 1866 (Tas)
ANY further info. would be great...Betty S
