Buckinghamshire / HOUSTON RIGG BROWNS
« on: Wednesday 09 January 19 14:54 GMT (UK)  »
Looking for information on father and son of same name.
Houston senior was born in Scotland in 1776 but spent a lot of time in Langley area of Buckinghamshire. He fathered three children with much younger SARAH ATKINS in LANGLEY (1841 census) before marrying her in Hillingdon, London in 1845. They had a further two children all christened at Langley Marish.

Houston Rigg 1841-? (joined 1st battalion 11th infantry 1860 in Portsmouth)
Janet 1842-1884
Hamilton 1844-1914
Agnes 1846-1931
Sarah 1848-?

Houston senior appears to have deserted his children after the death of wife Sarah in 1849 possibly (not confirmed with certificate). Some spent time with aunts and uncles as well as in the workhouse.

He died in London in 1857 whilst living in Southampton Row but I failed to trace him in 1851, when he
probably didn't want to be found! His father was Alexander Brown a wine merchant & his mother Isabel Hamilton.

Please can anyone throw any more light on these two - I have scoured all possible sources! I do know Houston senior was member of The Royal Order in Scotland too and could have been previously married to Agnes Berry when he was 20.

Warwickshire / WALKER ALFRED JOHN born about 1831/33 Birmingham
« on: Tuesday 07 November 17 13:18 GMT (UK)  »
I cannot trace his birth/christening or 1841 census. I believe I have his family although there is another similarly named family, and I have three marriages for him.
On the first marriage certificate, 26 Sep 1858 to Mary Ann Gilbert, no father is named.
He was a widow in 1861 and I then think he married Rebecca Jones in 1864 in Walsall. (no certificate yet) and after her death in 1871 he went on to marry Harriet Greaves in 1872, in Birmingham and names his father as Joseph, traveller.
His sisters were Martha Elizabeth(1837), Mary Ann (1841) and Emma Jane (1843) and his mother Mary Ann. Alfred was with his widowed mother & three sisters in 1851 and with them again in 1861 except for Martha (married).
Emma Jane certainly names her father as Joseph, commercial traveller at her marriage but neither Alfred or Emma state he was deceased.

There is 1841 census which almost fits but the mother is named as Sarah.

Maybe his father was not Joseph and so he didn't name him at his 1st marriage - I do have a marriage of Mary Ann Parsonage to Joseph Walker in 1836 in Birmingham.
Please can anyone help as I have spent hours on this!

Warwickshire / Handsworth look up - SAMUEL CLARE marriage about 1789
« on: Thursday 09 February 17 09:09 GMT (UK)  »
As Handsworth records are now classified under Birmingham and not Staffordshire I am posting this look up request here, but stand to be corrected!

I am looking for verification of the marriage of SAMUEL CLARE to ROSANNA probably HANDLEY in 1789 or thereabouts. Unsourced records name the place of marriage as St Marys Handsworth.

Thank you.

Berkshire Lookup Requests / Bucklebury KEATING family about 1818
« on: Saturday 05 November 16 12:07 GMT (UK)  »
I have the baptism record of a Michael Keating in 1818 in Bucklebury to George & Mary....fine, he's the one I am most interested in. He changes the spelling of his name so many times varying from Caten to Keighton and all combinations in-between.
On 1861 census Jane Keaten is named as his daughter aged 14. I have finally traced her baptism in Market Dereham, Norfolk to a James Cayton and Mary late Hatch. Michael did marry Mary Hatch in 1850 in Wolverhampton.
I found Jane in Wolverhampton in 1851 with correct date and place of birth but again her father is named as James.
He does seem to have moved around and I am wondering if he kept moving on to avoid debts etc and not only changed his surname somewhat (even taking into account lack of spelling rules) but also his christian name.
I cannot find a James Cayton with the stated birth date of 1819 in Berkshire anywhere else.

So please can someone look up the Bucklebury baptisms of children born to George & Mary around 1818 for me and help me to feel more certain that Michael is in fact James!

Sorry for long story but this research has proved quite difficult but enjoyably challenging.

Kent / HODGSKIN Harriet born abt 1828 Goudhurst Kent
« on: Monday 31 October 16 18:12 GMT (UK)  »
Please can anyone help me to trace the birth of Harriet.  I have found a birth and burial which match her dates but cannot be correct as she went onto marry John Brown and was still alive in 1871 living in Lambeth in 1871.
I haven't been able to trace their marriage but it is probable that son John born about 1851 in Ireland may give a clue in that they were married and lived in Ireland at the time.
Their second son was named Thomas which could point to her father being Thomas.
All the children except John seem to have been given the Hodgskin name as a middle name, so maybe John was born to John Brown in a previous marriage?

Buckinghamshire / BROWN John b abt 1811 Drayton Buckinghamshire
« on: Thursday 27 October 16 17:49 BST (UK)  »
John Brown married Harriet Hodgskin, b. 1828 Goudhurst Kent (can't trace).
They certainly had a son named Thomas Hodgskin Brown b. 1852 Bayfordbury, Hertfordshire  but an earlier son named John is listed on the 1861 census of Greenwich. He was said to be born in Ireland.
I have a further four children but lose track of them too.

I have not been able to trace a marriage - did it take place in Ireland?

In fact I am really struggling with John Brown and Harriet Hodgskin! I have Harriet on 1861 and 1871 census records but only John on 1861 census as a contractor.

PLEASE can anyone help at all.

Yorkshire (West Riding) / Robert DANIELL Newton Kyme m. 1682
« on: Monday 15 February 16 15:12 GMT (UK)  »
I am looking for any information relating to ROBERT DANIELL who married ANN CAWOOD/CAWOUD in 1682 in Newton Kyme, where I believe he died in 1703 or 1709. He had at least nine children between 1683 - 1697 (assuming there was only the one Robert in Newton Kyme at that time).

Somerset / ALLEN Judith abt 1779 Somerset: Charlton-Mackrell?
« on: Friday 22 January 16 10:11 GMT (UK)  »
Judith had an illegitimate daughter Frances Allen in 1796, some six years before she married Thomas Biggin in Pylle.  Frances was christened in Charlton-Mackrell, which may be a clue to her family whereabouts.
Frances seems to have been bypassed in all the researches around Thomas & Judith Biggin.
As my research is focussed on Frances Allen (the name under which she married) I am hoping someone can help me with the Allen family.
I have a Martha Allen also christened in Charlton-Mackrell to James & Ann (widow named Ivy) in 1793. They married there in 1792. So maybe her brother or even her father, as both were widowed at marriage.
Also Sarah Allen married Thomas Hodden there in 1790.

i will very grateful for any help as I have drawn a blank on every search.

Benjamin moved south to Hunslet where he married Esther Balmforth in Rothwell in 1832. After a few years in Hunslet the family moved to Oulton.
Benjamin was a master tailor and clearly stated he was born in Newcastle upon Tyne Northumberland on 1851 and 1861 census records.

I wondered if anyone had any clues?
