Armed Forces / Indian army supplementary lists 1942-1945
« on: Monday 15 October 18 11:56 BST (UK)  »
I'm picking up from where I left off a few years ago with proving my great grandfathers medal entitlement and I'm looking for some help.

I've exhausted what I think are all possible lines of enquiry, except the Indian army supplementary lists.

He first appears on the Army lists in October 1941 after being promoted to Warrant officer in May 1941 so he doesn't appear in the January supplement.

Does anybody have a copy of any of the supplements from 1942-1945 or possibly know if there are copies at the Imperial War museum in London?

Thanks in advance

Richard

Armed Forces / Help understanding Navy service record
« on: Thursday 17 August 17 17:40 BST (UK)  »
Hello,

I've taken a look at a relative's Navy service record which has the name of another guy underneath him.

I'm not sure if links are allowed but he can be found on a popular family history website beginning with A.....

Francis John Clarke, born 1877 in Doddiscombleigh/Christow. Number 184474.

I've not seen this before. Looking at the map, IDE is a small town about five miles from Doddiscombleigh.

Are these men possibly the same person?

If they are the same person, i'd appreciate any help understanding the Navy short hand!

Thank you,

Richard

Census Lookup and Resource Requests / 1881 - Francis John Clarke
« on: Thursday 17 August 17 14:12 BST (UK)  »
Hello,

I'm looking for my 2nd great grandfather, Francis John Clarke, in the 1881 census and having particular issues finding him.

Francis John Clarke, B. 1876. Doddiscombsleigh, Devon. Died 1951
I have the birth and death certificate for Francis, he never appeared to marry my 2nd great grandmother...

Birth certificate shows Father, John Clarke and mother Susan Cox.

They appear to have had a number of children -

William Thomas Clarke
Laura Mary Clarke
Frances M Clarke - 1877 -
Caroline Emma Clarke
Reginald Clarke
Ethel Clarke
Annie Clarke
Lilian Clarke

I've found them in the 1881 census with Frances M shown residing. However, no Francis John....

I've also found a death certificate (although not ordered yet...) for Frances M. He (yes, you read that right. He) died in 1954.

Could someone take a look for me, I've been trying for  a few weeks and I can't see the Clarkes for Clarks....

Thanks,

Richard

Hi,

I'm looking for someone to help add colour to a black and white photo of my Great Grandfather's military portrait. I've seen a few companies online that offer their services with varying costs.

Can anybody here recommend someone?

Thanks,

Rich

Durham / The Commercial Hotel, Barnard Castle....
« on: Monday 26 January 15 21:42 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

A bit of a long shot but if I was going to get any success, I thought it would be from someone on Rootchat.

My x3 Great Grandfather, John Patterson (1854-1892) is shown as being the landlord of the Commercial Inn in the 1891 census.

His son, also John Patterson (1877 - ?) is shown as being the Inn Keeper at the same pub in 1901, 1911 and 1914 when the Government used the stables.

I'm looking for any help people might be able to offer in the way of local knowledge. Advice about researching the family further and possibly, whether anyone knows the pub or lives close enough to visit at some point. I would be delighted if there were photos of the Pattersons on one of the walls!

Thanks,

Rich

England / Elizabeth Ann Lodge - Second pair of eyes needed
« on: Sunday 26 October 14 21:52 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

I'm not sure which section this request would best fall in. Possibly Durham or Yorkshire...

I've been researching part of my family tree and hit a bit of a brick wall.

Elizabeth Ann Lodge. Born 6 Nov 1856 in  Bridge End, Startforth, Yorkshire.

Birth certificate shows mother 'Mary'. 'X'. No father shown.
Baptism record from familysearch - 28 Dec 1856 - Parochial Chaperlry, Barnard-Castle, Durham.

Elizabeth Ann Lodge married John Patterson on 3 Jun 1876 in Startforth, Yorkshire

Now I've worked the family tree back to Elizabeth and John. I am 100% happy that my research is correct. Certificates and evidence all confirm it.

The interesting part is with Elizabeth Ann's parents. I've struggled but come up with this -

1881 census - shows Elizabeth & John. Details of birth for both fit. Also shown on this census is a John Lodge aged 76. Born about 1805 Widower. Born Barnard Castle. Relationship - Grandfather.

I cannot find an Elizabeth Ann Lodge in the 1871 census.

Another family tree on Ancestry pointed me in the direction of the 1861 census for a 'Wilson' family.

Elizabeth Ann Wilson, born Startforth, 1857.
John Wilson, born 1805, Barnard Castle - Father

Following this tree back, it appears that John Wilson/Lodge married Mary Baxter. Her mother, Mary Wilson.

Now I couldn't quite work this one out. Searching for Elizabeth Ann Wilson, born 1857 (+/- 5 years) gave no hits in this area. Could Elizabeth Ann Wilson be Elizabeth Ann Lodge?

Another set of eyes would be appreciated!

Rich

England / John Lavers born 1812
« on: Thursday 13 March 14 11:35 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

I've found another brick wall and need Rootschatters help to try and break it!

John Lavers born about 1812 in Nottingham.

Married Mary Ann Smith in Harbertonford in 1833. Census records -

1841 - Harberton - Occupation, woolcoomber.
1851 - Plympton St Mary - Occupation, police constable
1861 - Plympton St Mary - Occupation, Gardener
1871 - Plympton St Maurice - Occupation, Dairyman
1881 - Plympton Maurice - Occupation, Gardener

I cannot find him in the 1891 census, so I assume he died sometime between 1881 & 1891. There are a number of John Lavers who died in this space of time.

I have contacted Devon & Cornwall police to see if they have any records relating to him, sadly they couldn't find any.

Apart from the 1841 census, all the others list his place of birth as Nottingham.

I cannot find his baptism record or anything further to confirm he was born in Nottingham.

Any suggestions / help would be greatly appreciated!

Rich

Devon / Help with Ancestry 1891 census record
« on: Sunday 02 March 14 20:56 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

I'm trying to find Mary Ann Lavers b 1811 in Holbeton, Devon

I've got her from 1841-1881 but Ancestry won't find her in the 1891 census.

I've got her in Familysearch -
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/W4YQ-56Z

But no joy in Ancestry. Is anyone able to assist me in finding it?

Thanks,

Rich
