The lady in this picture is a Jarman from the Welsh valleys around 1930. It's the only photograph I have of her so would be grateful for any improvements.

The Thomas family having fun. This is my grandparents with all four of their children, and the only picture I have of my great grandmother. She was known as the Battleaxe. But since she was the wife of a mine worker, and sent all three of her sons to university, I think her nickname is a complement to her determination! Approximate date 1927.
Would love to have it restored.

The Common Room / When is 'Job DOne'
« on: Monday 18 July 22 11:18 BST (UK)  »
I have two people that I am hopng are siblings, in order to confirm a family legend.
1. John Evans Born 1821, Kilrhedyn
2. Hannah Evans Born 1813, Kilrhedyn

Both their marriage certificates show their father as Samuel Evans, a farmer.
John Evans was baptised in Rock Chapel, Trelech. Parents are Samuel Evans and Mary (nee James)
Anne Evan (Hannah Evans?) was baptised in Rock Chapel, Trelech; Parents are Samuel Evans and Mary (maiden name not given at that time.

In 1851 Hannah Evans was a seamstress, and had a 20 year old seamstress named Rachel James living with her. (Possible descendant of Mary James? Suggests the Mary James may be Hannah's mother.
If Hannah and John are siblings the family legend is true.

I think I have shown it likely, but not proven. Agreed?

The Common Room / Hearing about jobs in distant places
« on: Wednesday 22 June 22 17:16 BST (UK)  »
It's 1866. There's someone working as a gardener in Chipping Warden. He's 24 years old, not been married long, and has a 1 year old son. They decide to pack their bags and travel to Stapenhill (just east of Burton upon Trent, over the river). It's 50 odd miles away. I imagine he got a job at Stapenhill House.
I'm trying to imagine how they would have heard that there were gardening jobs available 50 miles away, whether he would have gone on spec - seems a heck of a journey, if he doesn't get a job, and has to come back. If he went hoping for a job, I imagine he would go alone, and send for the family if he was successful?
I can undestand ag labs moving to an industrial area where you could be fairly sure of finding work in the mines, the mills, the steelworks and so on. But does anyone know how the communications/travel would work for a gardener with a wife and baby?

Carmarthenshire / Capel y Graig, Trelech Baptisms
« on: Thursday 09 June 22 14:49 BST (UK)  »
I'm trying to check a family legend. If the legend is true, then it is likely that Hannah Evans is a sister of John Evans in the following:
1. Hannah Evans. Married 5 May 1853, age 40. Registry Office, Carmarthen. Resident Trelech at time of marriage.
Her father was a Samuel Evans, farmer.

2. John Evans. Married 22 Nov 1855, age 35. Saron Chapel, Llangeler.
Resident Emlyn Lodge, Llandyfriog at time of marriage.
His father was a Samuel Evans, farmer also.

I believe Hannah Evans was baptised at Capel y Graig, Trelech 27 Nov 1813.
Want to check whether John Evans was baptised in the same place, and whether mother's name is given in both cases.

I can't find records for Capel y Graig, Trelech (Ancestry and The Genealogist appear not to have them). Can anyone help please?

Warwickshire / Atherstone 1930s Engineering Company
« on: Sunday 21 February 10 19:48 GMT (UK)  »
Looking for a company called Rogerstones or similar in Atherstone in the early 1930s. I believe it was run by three brothers; an engineer, a blacksmith and a tinsmith. I would like to find any information about this company, like where they were and what they did.

Can anyone help?

According to a transcription of an entry for the 1881 census, I have

881 St George Hanover Square

LAWLESS, Catherine Daughter Single F 21 1860 Carmans Wife Westminster Middlesex

I'm puzzled as to what is meant by 'Carmans Wife'. Could someone please check the original and verify that it actually says that?

The reference is:

Many thanks.

Monmouthshire Lookup Requests / 1871 Census Abercarn
« on: Sunday 29 November 09 19:50 GMT (UK)  »
I'm trying to figure out what prompted my great grandmother, Mary Watts to move from Frome in Somerset to Deri in the Rhymney valley around 1800 at the age of 20 or under. I recently discovered that her cousin Frank Brimson had moved from Frome to Abercarn, and was killed in the Prince of Wales Colliery Disaster of 1878. So I'm wondering whether Mary first moved to Abercarn, then on to Deri.

Sorry about all that background, but could someone possibly check how many people living in Abercarn in 1871 were born in Frome, Somerset? Do the names Watts and Brimson appear on the list?
TIA
