Ireland / Mother's maiden name & COI records
« on: Tuesday 21 October 14 22:36 BST (UK)  »
This is not related to any query, just something I don't know the answer to - would anyone know why Church of Ireland baptism records usually omit the mother's maiden name? All my research has been on RC records and it's hugely rare for it not to be given. Or maybe the question should be why the RC records include it...?

Hi, can anyone direct me please as I can't find this. Is there a list available on the Family Search site of all the microfilms that the LDS has available of Irish Catholic parish registers? Thanks

Dublin / address lookup

Could anyone tell me please what was at 20 Essex St East in Dublin in 1914? I have a name associated with it - P. MacCraith. His first name might have been Padraig (otherwise Patrick McGrath). He might have been a bookdealer of some sort. Thanks.

Not sure if this has been posted before but I think some of the resources on this site are relatively new. Includes
- tithe applotment
- graveyard surveys
- loan fund details
- tenant list for the Wrixon-Becher estate mostly in Tullagh and Creagh civil parishes, Cape Clear and Sherkin Islands

Ireland / census - peope referred to by their initials
« on: Monday 21 May 12 18:14 BST (UK)  »
I was helping a relative with some research yesterday and found her grandmother in an English workhouse on the 1911 census. All of the inmates' names were given in full. I've only ever seen Irish workhouses refer to inmates by their initials. From some googling, it looks like giving inmates' names in full in England is common.

This is just a curiosity on my part so please don't go to any trouble to find out - but would anyone know why in Ireland we refer to inmates by their initials? Find it puzzling given that Ireland was ruled from England at the time and would think the same guidelines apply. Has anyone come across workhouse returns where inmate names are given?

Cork / donovan / greany baptism search
« on: Tuesday 03 April 12 19:28 BST (UK)  »
I have a family tree written years ago by someone that says that three children were born to a couple called Daniel Donovan and Mary Dinneen, parish of Castlehaven & Myross. The three children are named as Denis, Mary and Jerry.

I've found baptism records for Denis and Mary, I think. On the record for Denis, the surname is given as Greany but this seems to be a Donovan variant name from what I can find online. There are no other Mary Dinneens having children in this parish around this time so I'm hoping it is correct. Records for Denis and Mary:

http://churchrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/details/8cbbaf0124413

I can't find a record for Jerry though - can anyone help? I have no dates for him. He went to Australia so I can't trace him forwards at the moment. The only guiding dates are that his mother Mary Dinneen was born around 1830 and remarried in 1866 so assume she had her children c 1850-1865.

Cork / Lacka, Caheragh, Co Cork
« on: Monday 13 February 12 19:18 GMT (UK)  »
I've been asked to get a marriage record and Lacka, Caheragh is the address I was given for the bride. This doesn't seem to be an official townland though. The nearest I can see is Lackenafasoge. Would anyone know please if they are one and the same or if Lacka is an unofficial name for somewhere else.
