The Common Room / What is a 'Money-Maker'
« on: Thursday 12 May 22 22:14 BST (UK)  »
In 1836 Henry Hobbins arrived in Tasmania from Birmingham, England. The ship's captain, in a report stated that Hobbins gave his occupation as that of 'Smith in general' but the captain stated the Hobbins is 'very generally believed to be a Birmingham Money-Maker'.

Does anyone have any thoughts on what is meant by this.  I get the impression it wasn't complimentary.

Lanarkshire / Robert Herbertson c1804-1879 Who actually were his parents?
« on: Wednesday 16 March 22 02:06 GMT (UK)  »
Robert Herbertson in Portland, Victoria, Australia on the 23st January 1879.

According to his death certificate was aged 75 so born circa 1804. Place of birth was stated as Glasgow.

His father was listed as Robert Herbertson and his mother as Margaret (maiden name not know).

The informant named on the certificate was his son, Robert Herbertson jnr born 1843.

HOWEVER, I believe that the parents listed on the certificate are not actually correct and I will outline the reasons why.

1/ I can find no record of a Robert Herbertson marrying a Margaret in the relevant time period.

2/ The only Robert Herbertson I can find being born with a father Robert in around the right time period is Robert Herbertson born Feb 1807 and baptised 9 Feb 1807 at Dalton, Dumfriesshire. So place of birth and year of birth are both different to what is on his death certificate.

3/ Oral family history written down in 1965 has Robert Herbertson arriving in Australia in 1830 with his 2 brothers Henry and Alexander. There was an Alexander Herbertson born in Glasgow in 1823 to James Herbertson and Margaret (nee Hunter). He arrived in Australia in 1854 with no family members. His wife and children came at a later date. Alexander was a joiner by trade.

Alexander did have a brother Henry 1825 - 1876 but I can find no record of him coming to Australia.

Another brother, Andrew 1832 - 1901 did come to Australia between 1851 and 1861. I cannot find a record of his arrival.

(Another brother, George also travelled to Australia to escort Alice McKechnie the future wife of Andrew. George returned to Scotland).

Robert Herbertson arrived in Tasmania Australia in the 11th of May 1833 aboard the 'Eliza'. Surname is actually written and indexed as 'Habertson'

4/ A newspaper arcticle of 1933 describing the wedding of Robert Herbertson Snr's grand-daughter, Jessie Eaton Herbertson advised that she was attended by one bridemaid, her Aunty Peggy Herbertson from Lexton. The Lexton Herbertsons were descended from Andrew Herbertson.

5/ Family history again recalls cousins from Lexton coming to visit Robert's family in Portland.

6/ Robert and Isabella's children in order are;

Janet Douglas born 1835 (Note the second name)
   Mary Anne 1839
   James 1841
   Robert 1843
   Sarah 1845
   Georgina 1848
   Eliza 1849
   George 1851
   Thomas 1852
   Samuel 1853

   Isabella also had a daughter from a previous marriage;

   Isabella 1831

If it wasn't for his death certicate listing his parents as Robert and Margaret I would be almost certain that Robert Herbertson is the son of James Herbertson and Janet Dougal and is therefore a half brother to Andrew and Alexander.

Robert snr and the entire family returned to Scotland for a visit in 1855 and presumably visited family. His potential actual father, James (the father or Andrew and Alexander) was still alive, but James' first wife Janet nee Dougal (1783-1817) was deceased as was his second Margaret nee Hunter. At this time James was on his third marriage to Catherine nee Rankine.

Robert jnr was around 12 years old at this time so 25 years later may have simply got the parents name wrong.

I have a copy of the will of James Herbertson (1780 - 1858) and all of his children are mentioned (including Andrew and Alexander who are in Australia) except for Robert (if he is a son) and Henry. (I have Henry's death certificate that confirms James and Margaret as his parents).

So what do people think?

Can you find any record of Robert Herbertson, the son of Robert and Margaret?

Can you find any record of Robert Herbertson, the son of James and Janet?

Can you the find the birth record of Henry, the son of James and Janet?

Thanks for reading all this and if you need any further information, please let me know.

Somerset / Julia Galer born circa 1824 Keinton, Somerset, England
« on: Sunday 25 October 20 07:03 GMT (UK)  »
I'm looking for the parents and birth record of Julia Galer. She married Frederick Pitts in 1841 at Keinton, Somerset, England  as per the England & Wales, FreeBMD Marriage Index: 1837-1915 and they are on the 1841 and 1851 Census

I have been through the entire 1841 and 1851 censuses for that village and there is no family with a name similar to Galer.

They later migrated to Australia and on the death records in Australia for her children her maiden name is stated as Gailer or Gala. On some trees in Ancestry her maiden name is spelled Gaylor.

Any help would be appreciated.

Australia / "no presentment" - Legal Term. What does it mean?
« on: Tuesday 27 November 18 20:36 GMT (UK)  »
I am researching the Price family in Victoria and came across this newspaper article from the 24th July 1914

https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/91575073

"Mr. S. Leon (Crown Prosecutor) made an announcement at the Sale Criminal Court to-day in connection with the case, the King v. David John Kelly. The body of Charles Price was found at
Scrubby Creek, near Omeo on Sunday, 14th April. There was a bullet wound in the body. At the inquest it was alleged that Kelly had threatened to "do for" his wife and Price if he caught them together.

A verdict was returned that death was the result of a gunshot wound, and Kelly was
committed for trial on a charge of murder. Mr. Leon stated that no presentment
would be filed against Kelly."

Can anyone tell me what this actually means? My thinking is that the Prosecution decided not to proceed with the case which is quite extraordinary considering the evidence.

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Parent's Names on Marriage Certificat
« on: Sunday 01 May 16 02:50 BST (UK)  »
Can someone please decipher Ann's last name for me? I believe the first name actually says Jonas Jennings believe it or not.

They are the parent's names listed for Joseph Jennings born in Bradford, Yorkshire around 1827. AKA as Jonas Joseph Jennings. Married in Victoria Australia in 1866.

I believe this is Jonas jnr in 1841

Samuel was the son of Samuel Bailey and Isabella Lawson. I believe that Samuel snr and his family (except for Samuel jnr) arrived in Hobart aboard the 'Adventure' on 9 Apr 1833. (Ancestry has the record indexed as Baby).

Samuel and Isabella's other children were Isabella 1810-1883, George 1818-1852, James 1821 - 1881 and Mary 1822-1876. I have been able to find details of these other children. Marriages, deaths and children but can find no record of what happened to Samuel jnr.

I have confirmed that he is not the Samuel Bailey that died in 1875 #10425 (purchased this bloke's marriage certificat).

According to a 'Family History' written in 1964,  "An interesting fact is that Samuel Bailey, eldest son of Samuel and Isabella Bailey of Launceston, and brother of Mrs. Robert Herbertson, was master of a vessel trading between Portland and Launceston in 1849." This family history has a number of errors but I suspect there is an element of truth.

I have done what I think is extensive research using Trove but I can find nothing to confirm this. There are however a number of Captain Baileys.

His brother James was however a shipwright according to his daughter's birth record in 1850, later becoming a butcher.

His brother Mary married a Robert Snowden who was a ship's carpenter.

His father died in 1856 and Samuel jnr is not mentioned in his will. Maybe he was deceased by this time.

Can anyone help with his arrival, death and anything else you can find about him.

Thanks
Rickey

Australia / Jane Elizabeth Lemar 1833 - 1910
« on: Monday 07 September 15 03:28 BST (UK)  »
I believe that Jane Lemar was the daughter of Thomas  and Mary Ann Lemar but I am hoping that someone can confirm please.

According to this, http://www.macclesfieldhistory.com.au/glimpses-from-the-past.html Thomas and his unnamed wife arrived in SA in 1839 on the 'Resource' with 3 children; William, John Thomas and one who is not named but I believe to be Jane.

In Jane's obituary here http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article77468880 it says she arrived on the 'Resource' in 1837.

She married my 2nd great grandfather, Henry Colyer at Macclesfield SA in 1850 and after his death in 1872, married Alexander Cameron in 1873. I have the details from the indexes of both marriages and details of all the children. Her marriage to Henry as per the index on Ancestry shows her father's name as William which doesn't quite fit.

I am just wanting to confirm her parents if I can. (I don't have either of her marriage certificates or her death certificate and am wanting to avoid the expense if I can)

Thanks

Caithness / Peter Finlayson and Jeales/Gills/Giles Waters of Bower
« on: Monday 10 August 15 03:26 BST (UK)  »
Howdy, Peter Finlayson is the 5th great grandfather of my wife. His grandson, William (1828 - 1868) came to Australia in 1853.

I'm trying to get some more details on Peter. I have details of births/baptisms for his children William, John, Catharine, David, James, Elizabeth, Jean and Ann but have nothing at all on Peter. They were born between 1789 and 1813. A submitted tree on Family Search has his date of birth as 1762 and his wife's as 1766. I have searched on Scotlands People for Peter marrying but have come up with nothing that fits.

Can anyone help me please with his birth, marriage, death etc details. Also what as his wife's first name? I have attached an extract from John's death certificate which seems to show his mother's name as 'Jeales'?

If you need anything more please let me know. There seem to have been a lot of Finlaysons around Thurso, Bower in the early 1800s.

Thanks
Rickey
