Hello South Africa chatters,

Based in Australia I am unfamiliar with South Africa resources for researching family history.  I am trying to trace a deceased Australian relative Edith May CROOK (nee WYATT, formerly CRONIN).  It is known that she left Australia for South Africa during the early 1950's.

Edith was born in 1885, which would make her approximately 65 years of age when she left Australia.  It is not known if she was travelling alone or with a companion.  Edith might have travelled under her maiden name WYATT, or her surname from her first marriage CRONIN.

Any assistance with guiding me to the available resources will be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks, Jenster.

Australia / Edith May CROOK - Passport Issue - Passage to South Africa from Australia
« on: Saturday 04 October 14 10:33 BST (UK)  »
It has been a long time since I last posted on RootsChat and the site appears to have changed dramatically.  Apologies if I haven't used the correct forum for this request.

Very recently new information came to light regarding Edith May CROOK (nee WYATT) from a living descendent.  It is now known that she left Australia for South Africa during the early 1950's.  Before I post a request on the South Africa forum I would like to obtain more definitive information to narrow the time frame and hopefully know her destination port in South Africa.

Is there a way of researching the issue of Australian passports in the 1940's and 1950's?

Which resource should I use to research outward journeys from Australia to South Africa?

Edith was born in 1885, which would make her approximately 65 when she left Australia.  Edith might have travelled under her maiden name WYATT, or her surname from her first marriage CRONIN.  I suspect she was not divorced from her first husband when she married Robert James
CROOK.  Or she could have found a new partner and travelled using his surname.

Many thanks, Jenster.

Hi All,

Someone with a greater knowledge of NSW marriage certificates than myself may be able to offer some insight regarding the information recorded on a marriage certificate I have for a deceased relative.  The mc registration number is 1930 / 012162.

The bride’s name is shown as Brenda Ruby VERNON.
The bride’s parents are listed as Norman Thomas VERNON (deceased) and Alma CLARKE (deceased).
The certificate has a notation, dated 11th July, 1932, as follows
“In column 3 for Brenda Ruby Vernon read Brenda Ruby Hanson
“In column 8 for 18 read 17
“For bride’s parentage in column 9 read Norman Victor Hanson (deceased) and Bona Vera Wyatt (deceased)”
The information in the notation is correct.  Brenda Ruby HANSON is the correct birth name, and the parent’s names are correct (as per Brenda Ruby HANSON birth cert I have).
Under what circumstances are notations of this nature made to certificates?

Brenda Ruby HANSON was orphaned at the age of 8 and she and her siblings were cared for by a family member related to their father.  I have confirmation that this relative had guardianship of Brenda Ruby until the end of 1928.  The mc shows that consent for the bride was given by Arthur Charles Leitch Bayliss being a Guardian of Minors.

I have no idea how the VERNON family relates to the HANSON family.  I can find no connection or association to a family with the surname of VERNON and I have been unable to locate any records for either Norman Thomas VERNON or Alma CLARKE.

The marriage certificate also has many numbers in the notation column, which look like reference numbers, but I do not know to what they refer.  The numbers are:
31/3648
32/10892
40/48650
41/699
42/16420
46/27791
56/7770
P29409/79

Any help with trying to solve some of this mystery will be greatly appreciated.

Australia Lookups completed / Look-up - NSW Births 1910-1918 - COMPLETED
« on: Monday 07 November 11 09:54 GMT (UK)  »
Hello,

If a kind person has access to the NSW Births 1910 – 1918, are you able to do a look-up for me please?  :)

I'm looking for children of Robert James CROOK and Edith May WYATT.
I have the birth cert for their first child, Ruby Edith CROOK b. 1909.
I also have the marriage cert for another child, Robert Bertram CROOK where I have calculated his dob as 1913.

Robert James CROOK married twice and his second wife was the informant on his death cert.  His first marriage and the children of that marriage are not recorded on his death cert.  There were no children from his second marriage.

My research for a death cert for Edith May WYATT has been fruitless to date  :(

Many thanks,

Jenster

Trying to locate a death certificate or date of death for Edith May CROOK (born WYATT, formerly CRONIN)

Edith was born 26 August 1885 in Spring Hill, Queensland, Australia.
Edith married William Francis CRONIN 6 December 1905 in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia - later divorced.
Edith married Robert James CROOK 30 October 1916 in Moore Park, New South Wales, Australia.

The last confirmed official entry for Edith is the New South Wales Electoral Roll for 1937.

Edith's second husband, Robert James CROOK,  remarried in Sweden c1943, but I have been unable to obtain any records from Sweden to confirm if Edith and Robert divorced or if Robert was a widower at the time of his second marriage to Dawn Paulene Lillian SEABOURNN (surname also spelled as SEABURN).
Robert's death certificate does not mention his first marriage or his children from that marriage.
