Australia / Looking for Jeanetha MATHEWS on a shipping list
« on: Friday 08 February 13 00:28 GMT (UK)  »
Hi

I am trying to find Jeanetha Mathews b. 1876 Cape Colony on a passengers list to Australia.

I have found her son
Harold Mathews b. abt 1903
arrival  2 December 1912 Sydney Australia (NSW Unassisted Immigrant Passenger List 1826-1922)
from Cape Town onboard the ship Runic.

I know Harold's father did not accompany them.

I would appreciate someone glancing over this passenger list incase I have missed her. I know many chatters have keen eyes.  She may have used her maiden name Saayman or the variation Zaaiman. Also her first name is sometimes written as Jeannetha or Jeanette.

Many thanks for your help.

South Africa / Dr. William Robert Mathews marriage to Jeannetha Susannah Saayman
« on: Tuesday 15 January 13 03:24 GMT (UK)  »
Hi

I am writing from Australia and trying to piece together the life of William Robert Mathews and Jeannetha Saayman before there arrival in Australia.

William Robert Mathews b. 1860 Beechwood Victoria Australia d. 1932 Sydney.
He is on the UK 1891 census as a medical student. After he graduated it is believed he may have travelled to South Africa with the Royal Army Medical Corps as a doctor during the Boer War.  Another story is he may have joined the South African Police force in Rhodesia. However, I have been unable to find evidence for either service from internet websites.

I am also looking for a marraige between Robert and Jeannetha Susannah Saayman b. 23 June 1876 Cape Colony Calitzdorp.........I think. d. 1955 Sydney.

They had three children in South Africa.
Harold b.?
Norah b. ?
Raleigh the youngest was born 1909 at Park and Macdonald Streets Belgravia which I assume may have been the home/practice of Dr. William Robert Mathews.

1913 The ship Afric has Dr. William Robert Mathews and son Raleigh sailing from Cape Town to Melbourne Australia. However, I can't find Jeannetha or the other children on the passenger list.

Later in Australia but not until 1930 Jeannetha is on the electoral rolls living with Dr. WRM.

What I would like to find is the following evidence for Dr. William Robert Mathews:
1. The date he arrived in Africa working either in the RAMC or
2. Private practice details in Johannesburg or elsewhere.
3. Evidence of his marriage to Jeannetha

For Jeannetha
1. I would like to find her on a shipping list so I can ascertain the date she arrived in Australia.
2. Any addresses where she and William may have lived in Johannesburg or elsewhere.

I am grateful for any advice or help. Many thanks.

Australia / Francis (Frank) Joseph Wyatt a date of death in Queensland
« on: Tuesday 10 July 12 01:16 BST (UK)  »
Hi Everyone

I have been trying to find a date of death for
Francis (Frank) Joseph Wyatt b. Nov 16 1914

There is a 1972 ER entry at Springhill Queensland. Where it seems he lived most of his life. He was a waterside worker. I know this entry has him living with his brother Edward Patrick  who died in 1974 and is at Nudgee Cemetery. However, I can't find Francis there.

I have tried researching other on line cemeteries in Brisbane without success. Also I have tried to locate a death/funeral notice for both Francis Joseph and Edward Patrick without any luck

I am hoping the expertise of the roots chatters may be able to discover  date of death for Francis Joseph.

Many thanks for any help

Australia / Passengers 1820-1957 looking for 2 ladies
« on: Saturday 09 June 12 04:10 BST (UK)  »
Hi Everyone

If anyone is able to do a look up I would really appreciate it. I can see on the  New York list there is a Mrs Gwendoline Wilson. Another name listed is Edith Crook also Edith May Crook.

These two names are the same as 2 people I am researching. They have been discussed on this site  before and a lot of research has been done prior. I am still trying to find a date of death for them both. Nothing has turned up in Australia. Now looking to see if they lived outside Australia.

Here is some more info to help to cross check with details on the passenger lists.

Gwendoline Vera Wilson
b. June 1907 Queensland

Edith May Crook
b. 28 Aug 1885

They could have departed either Sydney or Brisbane about 1944 onwards and not necessarily together.

Many thanks

United States of America / Australian WW2 Brides to America
« on: Friday 18 May 12 08:58 BST (UK)  »
Hi Everyone

I am writing this from Australia. For the past few years I have reached a brickwall in trying to trace what happened to a member of my family tree. Her name is

Gwendoline Vera Wilson (nee Hanson)
b. 7 June 1907 Queensland Australia.
m. 31 December 1927.

In 1947 her husband filed for divorce (after 10 years of separation) on the grounds of desertion and she did not attend the hearing and her address was not recorded on the documents.

The last address for Gwendoline is a 1943 electoral roll entry in Brisbane Australia.

After searching Australian Birth Death & Marriage Indexes for a few years I have been unable to find a remarriage. Also I have not found a death record.

I thought I would investigate if she was a war bride on board the 1945,1946 or 1947 passengers ships which sailed from Brisbane or Sydney to America.  Gwendoline Vera may have used the last name Crook, Hanson, White or Wyatt. I was wondering if anyone could help with lookups to see if Gwendoline's name is listed on any passenger arrival lists on a vessel which left Australia to California after WW2 during the years in question.

I appreciate any advice or information.

Hi

I am writing this from Queensland Australia. I hope you can help me find out more information about my great great grandfather William Edward Wyatt via lookups....much appreciated and other resources available to UK rchatters.

I do not have an exact date of birth for William Edward Wyatt. I do not know the names of his parents or siblings.

I have been unable to find his name on a passenger list.

23 Nov 1878 he married in Sydney to Mary Ann Elizabeth Delaney.

William and Mary Ann move to Queensland and have all their children in the Brisbane area.

1916 He is on the mariage cert for 1 of  his daughter's with the occupation sailor but he has not been listed on an electoral roll entry since 1903. Various records including Australian war records have been checked without success to locate his movements.

His wife  Mary  Ann embarks on another relationship and uses the last name of Gould.

I have never been able to locate a death certificate for William  Edward Wyatt in Australia and I thought he may have returned to England after 1903.

I would be very grateful if anyone can discover more information. Thank you.
