Brampton Hearth Tax returns 1674

Does anyone know where the 3 large houses listed in the Returns actually stood, one with 10 hearths was owned by the Leman family and is known to have burnt down in 1733 and was probably replaced by Brampton Hall.  The other 2 one with 10 hearths was owned by William Jurdan, the other with 7 hearths was owned by Sir Robert Yallop. I would assume they were timber framed constructions and will have probably have disappeared into the ground, but what about the lands they may have had, I can find no reference to these either at present.

Norfolk / Littlewood Family Great Yarmouth
« on: Thursday 02 October 14 15:03 BST (UK)  »
Is anyone researching the Littlewoods from Great Yarmouth, my grandmother (b about 1890) was a member of a large family that split far and wide. I have few records to date other than her father and grandfather were John Littlewood.

I am also looking for the Thompson family and have tracked them back to Joseph Thompson living on Elm Hill in Norwich in the late 1700s. Can anyone extend back further.

For both families there were rumours of a Scottish ancestry but nothing has ever been proven.

Essex / Robert Aylen Parents
« on: Tuesday 26 August 14 19:07 BST (UK)  »
Robert Aylen, born in North End Essex about 1810, Married Lucy Saunders in 1838 at St Peter and St Paul church Grays Thurrock. On their marriage certificate Roberts father is given as Thomas 'Ayling' (Aylen).

Does anyone have any written evidence as to whether Roberts mother was Mary and to where in Essex his father Thomas was born.

Suffolk / Jordans in Iken
« on: Wednesday 20 August 14 16:52 BST (UK)  »
Have recently found a Settlement Certificate for Abraham Jordan (1736 - 1808) and his wife (Barbara 1736 - 1809) and Family (Abraham 1764 - 1831 and Benjamin 1767 - ?) for transfer from Iken to Sternfield. The trail is solid from here on, but does anyone have any information about Abrahams parents, I believe they were Abraham and Mary. I can find the family in the Iken church registers in the 1760s but have not been able to decipher any further back.

I have not been able to find reference in the adjoining parishes for the expected dates nor a settlement certificate to cover the arrival. Some of the Pakenham group fit the early dates but I do not think they are connected.

Suffolk / King Famiy Leiston
« on: Monday 06 February 12 13:23 GMT (UK)  »
Can anyone shed any light on the very large King family that I believe lived on Leiston Common. I am related to Mabel E (1895), daughter of John G (1867). I believe Johns father was James (1838) and Sophia but I am not sure, with James' father being George (1816).

The real problem seems to be an expansion of the King family in the early part of the 1800s and the common names in use and the reuse of names in a second marriage, it's all very confusing.

I have not found anybody researching this area, perhaps I know why.

Suffolk Lookup Requests / Sternfield Jordans
« on: Thursday 02 February 12 16:14 GMT (UK)  »
Has anyone found the parents of Abraham Jordan (b about 1733) and his wife Barbara (maiden name maybe King). They are recorded as having married in Sternfield church around 1770. Not sure about the date, it was not clear on the fiche.

The had a number of children whose christenings are recorded, these include Simon (1775), Letitia (B/D 1781) Hannah (1778) and Lethia (Could be a second Letitia 1782).

Given the name tradition we may be looking for an Abraham or a Simon born around 1705. Whatever it is it will be a biblical name, on the maternal line it is probably Mary or Letitia.

There could be a direct link to the Pakenham Jordans, they had an Abraham tradition but the migration distance seems too great, however, a lot of land was being enclosed in the mid 1700s in the Pakenham area. All have direct links to farming.

Essex Lookup Requests / Aylens in Essex
« on: Wednesday 01 February 12 11:01 GMT (UK)  »
We are looking for Robert Aylen, born around 1815 in Essex probably at Grays End, he died in 1873 in Kensington. He is recorded as marrying Lucy Saunders (b1809) 26th March 1838 at St Peter and Paul Grays Thurrock. Lucy had two children at the time of the marriage but is recorded as spinster on the marriage certificate. Which is where we have confusion, on the certificate the names are recorded as Ayling for both Roberts father and the witnesses, all were illiterate.

The Aylen family were brick workers some were layers and some were makers, they can be traced from the mid 19th century following the building boom, they end up in the Beckenham area of Kent although there is a solid link to the group in Portsmouth.

We need to find out  about Roberts father Thomas, probably born around 1790 and in the Essex area, possibly in the triangle NW of Chelmsford, this is a hunch because a recently deceased relative recalled visits to this area in her very young days.

Norfolk Lookup Requests / Thompson Norwich and Yarmouth
« on: Tuesday 31 January 12 10:21 GMT (UK)  »
I have traced the Thompson family who lived in the Housego Bldgs in Yarmouth in the late 1800s back to Thomas and Susan (Searle/Scales) with a good degree of certainty.

Thomas (1822) and Susan (1825) are listed as marrying in St Julians Norwich in 1843 (church Register) although another source indicates 1844. Thomas' father is given as Thomas. Both are found on the 1841 census living in Norwich and working as shoemakers. Thomas senior was born about 1795.

The line of the family I am following is son James (w)(1855) he is recorded in 1871 as a general labourer but I know he worked on the windmills so the transition to Yarmouth is logical.

I have three requests

1  Thomas senior, where was he born (I suspect Norwich) and in fact anything about him.

2  Susan, I suspect she died in childbirth in 1861, I have records of a burial of a Susan Thompson and a Joshua            Thompson (age 0) at around the same time, did Thomas remarry?

3  James (W) (1855) married twice, the first around 1879 to Anne Brackenbury who died in 1898, he then remarries around 1902. Existing family records give the date as 1902 but he had a further daughter who insisted she was born in 1901. Who did he marry and when, it was probably in St Nicholas Yarmouth.

Any information would be greatly appreciated.
