Suffolk / Patience the minor
« on: Tuesday 28 November 23 04:45 GMT (UK)  »
I have been searching for Patience Barber's birth or baptism records.    Her marriage Sep 1836 to Henry Soden in Lambeth M/sex says she is married with consent of John Barber, father of the said minor.
All her Middlesex census returns state she was born in Chediston Suffolk, somewhere within the years of 1813 to 1822.   Census of 1841 Patience is 20 years (rounded down) in 1851 - 32y,  1861- 39y, 1871 - 58 and in 1880 is 66 on her death cert and 67 in the newspaper death notice.
But the only transcription record so far is a baptism in Chediston of 23 Oct 1812 to parents John and Ann Maria Barber which makes her 24 when she married.   Would this age be too old to be a minor ?  Both the Banns of March 1836 then Sep 1836 also say she is a spinster minor.
Thanks Louise

Armed Forces / assistant surgeon Soden
« on: Tuesday 28 November 23 03:20 GMT (UK)  »
Thomas Soden.  I know  his name and the fact that he was in the British Army before his death around 1818.  Did you join the Army or get conscripted as you were a medical person?
As I do not know exactly when or were he died, I have no age for a possible birth, and no marriage or any birth/baptism records for his 3 children.
I do know Thomas's wife Elizabeth Crivelli was born in Naples c1793 , and possibly they married while he was serving overseas, she collected an Army pension from c1818 for herself and 3 children listed in the Army Compassionate lists as Theresa (no birth date) who died 1834. Henry born 15 June 1814 and Joseph born 15 Feb 1817.  Next to no clues from any later records.
There are plenty Thomas Soden's listed in records late 1700 and early 1800 but how to  narrow things down.  Thomas Soden of Artillery Place, M/sex the Apothecary who was bankrupt in Oct 1793.  Thomas Soden in the Royal College of Surgeons examinations in March 1804 3rd rate and 5th rate (think these maybe Naval rankings)  Thomas Soden 1805 listed as a member of RCS living at City Road London.   Thomas Soden No 2611 to Assistant Surgeon, in 31st Foot, commissioned officers 1806, hospital mate previous to being commissioned. (what was a hospital mate)  T Soden hospital assistant promoted to assistant surgeon in 1814.
DNA tests have proved that it was not the Thomas Soden, Assistant Surgeon of the 79th Foot who married Elizabeth Whitford in 1788 and died 15 Oct 1816. One ruled out!!
Any ideas on where to go from here please.
Thanks  Louise

Hello,   Wasn't sure where to post this. I am looking for more details about the death and burial a   great uncle Gordon Ross-Soden who died in Salamaua hospital in PNG on 20 March 1931. He was a pilot  working over there and took ill and had to be stretchered to the hospital, but it was too late.
I have tried several times to contact the BDM dep in PNG to get a death certificate but to no avail.    Not sure where else to try.
Thank you

I'm searching for records after 1980 in NSW. My husbands mother was raised in a home in Victoria and never new her parents.  Her 1912 birth certificate said her mother was Kathleen Hickson age 20 born in Melbourne, no father listed.  The records from the home had no more details.  The only person who matches is Kathleen Hickson born 1893 in Cheltenham and then appears only in 1914 on the Electoral roll in Tasmania then marries William Richard Duce in 1914. He continues in the Tas electoral rolls alone, but Kathleen is not listed. From her parents death notices in Trove we found Kathleen had remarried in NSW in 1931 to Archibald Twigg. The marriage cert said she was a widow but Duce was still alive.  Archibald died in 1953 and Kathleen Twigg still appears in Neutral Bay  electoral rolls until 1980. Searched the cemetery where Archibald is buried but Kathleen is not listed. Also not in the BDM's up to 1990 in NSW or Vic, not in Ryerson or in Ancestry trees.
Any ideas on where else to search. Kathleen would have been 87 in 1980 so think it unlikely she would have married again after almost 30 years of widowhood, or moved away from Sydney. All her siblings in Vic were dead. If we don't know a death date how can you order a certificate. I don't think she had any children with either husband.
Thanks Louise

South Africa / cape colony records
« on: Tuesday 23 December 14 11:52 GMT (UK)  »
Hello,
Can anybody help me please.  Do burial records exist for St Lukes Church Salt River Cape Colony (Capetown ) for around 1884 as I can only find baptism and marraiges.

I have been searching for Henry Cecil Soden and his wife Emma Green who with their five children emigrated from London to Melbourne Australia c 1882.  I have found the baptisms of Claude Ledeboer, Gwladys Edith and then Charles Goad Soden in 1884 in Salt River.  Their last child Hubert Cecil was then born after they arrived Victoria in 1889.  I believe Charles may have died in Salt River, but haven't been able find any death or burial records.

London and Middlesex / 2nd reg hospital Westminster London
« on: Saturday 05 October 13 08:13 BST (UK)  »
Hello,
I am seeking help to find information on Thomas Soden who died in Dec 1820 and abode listed was 2nd Reg Hospital.
He was burried in St Margarets church yard Westminster, London, and there are lots of others in the register whose abode is the same 2nd Reg Hospital.  Source is the FindMyPast Westminster Burials transcipts page 101.

Does anybody know what this 2nd reg might refer to.

His wife Elizabeth Soden and their 3 children, Teresa b 1811, Henry b 1814 and Joseph b 1817 are listed in the Army compasionate lists and she reveived payments till she died in Gainsford St Horselydown Surrey in 1851. Elizabeth is listed in 2 census as born in the Kindom of Naples, and perhaps they married over there as I also have not been able to find a marriage for them.  The children record their birth place as London, and Joseph lists his father's occupation as Surgeon.

Sorry but apart from this, I have next to no information on Thomas. This Thomas would be the right age, as I believe he was the one born in 1793 to Thomas and Elizabeth Soden and christened in Finsbury St Luke Old Street. But I have no proof of this.

Any idea on how to find more information on who or what 2nd Reg might have been.  I have not been able to find him in army lists.
Thank you
Louise

London and Middlesex / disapearing henry's
« on: Monday 26 August 13 13:47 BST (UK)  »
Hi,
I am looking for information on Henry Soden and his son Henry Soden last found in the 1851 census in Limehouse, Tower Hamlets in Middlesex.
Henry (snr) married Parience Barber in 1836 in Lambeth Surrey and they had 9 children.
The first child was Henry born in Dec 1837 and baptised in St Saviour Southwark.
Both Henrys are in the 1841 and 1851 census and then they both disapear. Henry (jnr) would have been 23 by 1861, so presumably is out working, but unable to find someone who matches the age except for a Henry William in Bethnal Green.
Henry (snr) a clerk also dissapears, and Patience is in the 1861 and 1871 census with daughters until she dies in Islington in April 1880. Death cert and newspaper item list her as wife of Henry. So that makes me think he is still alive.
Would appreciate any ideas on traking him down.

New Zealand Completed Requests / Forbes of Dunedin
« on: Saturday 11 August 12 07:50 BST (UK)  »
Hello,

I am seeking any information please, on the Forbes family who lived in Roslyn, Dunedin.
Father George Forbes died 1915 and mother Johanna Morrison D 1920, both were originaly from Scotland.  Arrived in NZ approx 1862.  The only births I can find are Alexander in 1864, then  Thomas in 1879, and George Jnr  1875.
George Jnr was killed 1916 in WW1, and Alexander died NSW in 1919, but mother's death cert lists 2 males and 3 girls still living in 1920.
The NZ electoral rolls have them living in Ann St Roslyn Dunedin.
At least 2 children  - Alexander and Henrietta came to Australia.
Alexander married my ggaunt, Emma Matilda Jones in WA then went to NSW and Henrietta married Henry Barratt in NSW and lived in Queensland.
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you
Louise
