Europe / Norway Record - Welhelsem
« on: Saturday 12 November 22 11:13 GMT (UK)  »
Hi, I have been researching my family tree for a number of years but never had any connection to Norway until now, so hoping someone could give me a few pointers in terms of the best sites to visit.  I have a DNA connected with Wilhelmina born Norway in approx 1856 and moved to New York when young and married James E Jacobs. I am particularly looking to gain information on Wilhelmina, I have a couple of surname of Wilhelmsen or Rasmussen, but definitely her parents as Oksel Welhelsem and Selles Kuntsaur both born Norway but not sure how to go about finding the records for them as dont have birth dates or area they are from.
Could anyone give me pointers of research tools?

Ireland / New to Irish Ancestry - help finding a marriage Delaney
« on: Monday 07 October 19 17:28 BST (UK)  »
Forgive my ignorance but could anyone give me advice on how I would go about locating a marriage in about 1840-1850 for the names below, these are the catholic names from the christening record of one of their children.

Matthai Delaney and Honora Shasbury.

They could have been from Kilerry or Kulkenny,

The were both born circa 1820 in Ireland, I know this as the first entry I have for them on the 1851 census when they appeared in Willington Quy, Northumberland.  Honora is named as Anne on the following census, I am assuming Honora and Anne are interchangeable.
If anyone could give me advice on good websites for source this information, I am more than willing to do the work, I'm just new to searching records for Ireland.
Thank you in advance.

Banffshire / COMPLETED - Herd/Noble Illegimate on census 1871
« on: Wednesday 27 December 17 17:05 GMT (UK)  »
I am wondering if someone could shed some light on why 2 children would have been listed on the 1871 census as Illegitimate, when their parents were married.

1871 24 Crook Oness Street, Banff
James Noble 1821 Fisherman
Mary Noble 1845 Fishermans Wife
Jean Noble 1845 Dom Serv
Alexander Herd Grandson 1869 Illegitimate b. Macduff
Infant Grandson 1871 Illefitimate b.Macduff

I have been able to obtain the birth for both Alexander and Infant (James) and their birth register state Father Robert Herd-Seaman m.s and mother Jane Herd (formerly Noble).  They married in 1866

I am assuming Jean above is Jane and wonder why their children would be listed on the census as illegitimate even though the parents were married.

Northumberland / North Shields - Queen Alexandra Road West bomb 1943
« on: Thursday 16 February 17 20:24 GMT (UK)  »
I wonder if anyone has any information or old photos of Queen Alexandra Road West, North Shields, or maybe could look up 1939 register to see who was living at number 105.
I am led to believe that the bomb hit this house and it was rebuilt and just wanted to see what the street looked like before 1943 if possible, or whether it is ust a rumour.

Northumberland / After the Workhouse.... Gallagher children
« on: Sunday 06 November 16 21:28 GMT (UK)  »
Hi, I have 3 children in my family who went to Tynemouth Union Workhouse as listed on the 1891 census.
Could anyone advise me if I can find out when they left and also where they would have gone when they left, their mother had died and their father had been sent to Jail for 1 month for neglect in June 1890 and the poor children were sent to the workhouse and were still there in April 1991.  I dont know which Jail their father was sent to.
They lived Magnesia Bank North Shields before they were in the workhouse.

Father: John Gallagher b1854, Ireland
Children:  Patrick Gallagher b1879 Ireland, Thomas Gallagher b 1884 North Shields and Mary Gallagher b 1895 North Shields

Berkshire / Brendan's Cottage, Wantage Road, Berkshire
« on: Thursday 17 March 16 22:31 GMT (UK)  »
Hi
I wonder if anyone could help me out, a relative of mine was living at Brendans Cottage, Wantage Road, Berkshire on 1939 census.  It states he was General Labourer RFA Mill, Richard Simpson b1915.
Story has it in my family that he ran off to work with race horses, I just wondered if this property could have something to do with racing.  I dont know the area at all so if anyone could help out that would be great.
Also what would RFA Mill be?
Many Thanks

Banffshire / Alexander McWilliam (Grant) Illegitimate b Keith lived Maggieknockater
« on: Monday 21 September 15 10:21 BST (UK)  »
I wonder if someone would be able to help me with the a dead end I have come to in my tree.
Alexander McWilliam was an illegitimate child to Elspet 'Elsie' McWilliam and was born in Keith, Banff in 1868.
Alexander lived with his grandmother Elizabeth McWilliam b 1822 Cairnie, Aberdeen and Mother Elspet 'Elsie' McWilliam b Bonharm 1848 until 1881, from here I am unable to locate him, they lived in Maggieknockater, his mum Elspet 'Elsie' McWilliam is a former Domestic Servant and his grandfather Alexander McWilliam is deceased (1840).

On the census for 1871 and 18871 Alexander McWilliam is known as Alexander Grant, therefore, I am assuming his father was named Grant, and he was known by his mother's surname.  I have a copy of the birth and he is listed as illegitimate.

On the 1891 census his mother and grandmother are still living in Maggieknockater and is appears his mother did not marry.

It may be that Alexander moved to Durham and changed his name to Alexander Williams, I have been trying to locate my Alexander Williams b 1868 in Banff for a couple of years now and this is the closest that I have ever getting to locating him.  Therefore, I need to rule out Alexander MCWilliam (Grant) if this is not my relative, or even better find out if this is my gr grandfather who I have been searching for.
Any help on this would be greatly appreciated, I just need either rule him in or out.
Maybe someone would know if the Grant family from around the Maggieknockater area employed servants? or maybe I can find out where Elspet was working as a Domestic Service around 1867-68 then I could see if she lived with or near a the Grant Family, at the time of her pregnancy with Alexander.

Banffshire / Connection between Banff and Durham or Northumberland
« on: Thursday 23 January 14 21:28 GMT (UK)  »
Hi
I am tracing my great grandfather and on the 1901 and 1911 census he resides in South Shields, Durham on the bank of the River Tyne and his birthplace is Banff, Scotland on both entries.

I have been searching for him prior to 1901 for months with no success.  Therefore, as a branch of my research I wonder if anyone is aware of any connections between Banff and South Shields, Durham around the 1890's and if there are any reasons in relation to industry that would be a reason for him to choose to move to South Shields, Durham from Banff.
