Dumfriesshire / Dr. William Scott, Clarence Cottage, Ruthwell
« on: Thursday 08 September 22 16:06 BST (UK)  »
I am wondering if anyone might have access to any local newspapers that would have an obituary for Dr William Scott of Clarence Cottage, Ruthwell. Dr Scott died in Dumfries Infirmary in December 1927 aged 68.
He was born in Keith, Banffshire and was the son of James Scott and his wife Christina Shearer.
He married his first wife Elizabeth Anderson McDonald in Elgin in 1883. She died in Dumfries in 1913 aged 55. He married his second wife Sarah McGillivray in Logie/Stirling in 1916.
I am hoping an obituary might tell me where he was buried.
Thank you

Aberdeenshire / RITCHIE OR RICHARDSON, PARISH OF CAIRNIE
« on: Thursday 09 June 22 16:05 BST (UK)  »
I am just looking for some advice/opinions please.

My 3 x great grandmother Mrs Margaret Robson nee Mellis died at Alehousehillock in the Parish of Cairnie on 3rd January 1865 aged 68. Her death certificate gives her parents names as James Mellis and Margaret RITCHIE.  She was born on 6th February 1796.

Other children born to James Mellis and Margaret RITCHIE were -

Isobel Mellis born  1789
Anne Mellis born  1798
Janet Mellis born 1801

In his book "The Parish of Cairnie" by James Pirie, published in 1906, he mentions the family of William Mellis and his wife Jane Norrie. He states that they had a son, James Mellis born in 1757 who married Margaret RICHARDSON and that this couple had a daughter Janet Mellis born in 1800 who married Robert Shearer.  Janet Mellis wife of Robert Shearer died on 25th October 1850 aged 50, so no death certificate for her but the Cairnie OPR record the baptism of Janet Mellis on 20th August 1801 and give her parents names as James Mellis and Margaret RITCHIE.

The OPRs also show the children of James Mellis and Margaret RICHARDSON -

Jean Mellis born 1787
Christian Mellis born 1791
William Mellis born 1793.

My question is - is it possible that Margaret Ritchie and Margaret Richardson are the same person OR  has the writer James Pirrie confused two different families?

I found a death in Keith of Mrs Ann MacIntyre  in 1888 aged 89 whose death certificate gives her parents names as James Mellis and Margaret RICHARDSON - could this possibly be the Anne Mellis mentioned above whose mother was Margaret RITCHIE ?

Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Banffshire / Keith War Memorial
« on: Thursday 28 April 22 13:52 BST (UK)  »
I am searching for information on two brothers, James Scott born 1890 and John Scott born 1892, two of the family of James Scott and his wife Ann Stewart. I have seen two names on the Keith War Memorial,  James Scott and John Scott. Might they have been the two brothers I am looking for?
One of their sisters was Annie Scott who married James Annand in Keith in 1913. James was manager in the Strathisla Distillery. Annie's son was the Revd James Annand, a Church of Scotland clergyman.
Any information would be much appreciated.

Ross & Cromarty / Lillian McDonald, Alness
« on: Sunday 28 June 20 16:45 BST (UK)  »
Lilly Livingstone was born in Maryhill, Glasgow in 1879, daughter of Allan Livingstone from Glencoe and his wife Mary Ann King.
Lilias as she became, married Donald McDonald, a tailor, in Glasgow in 1910. Donald was the son of Alexander McDonald, a crofter, and his wife Annie McRae.
Lillian is the name given on her death certificate. She died at 38 High Street, Alness on 28th January 1945. Her husband was the informant on her death certificate. Can anyone explain to me why the Medical Attendant was Squadron Leader Davies, R.A.F Station, Alness?
I don't know if Lillian and Donald had any family but presume she was buried in Alness ?
Any information would be appreciated.

Duncan and Catherine McAlpine had seven known children -

London and Middlesex / Isabella Campbell, King Edward Industrial School
« on: Friday 07 February 20 14:41 GMT (UK)  »
Looking for any information on Isabella Campbell, born around 1874 in Belstead, Suffolk, daughter of Samuel Campbell and his wife Ellen Pemberton. The last trace I have of her is from the 1911 census where she appears as a Matron's Assistant at the King Edward Certified Industrial School in Hackney. One of her sisters, May Campbell married George Hughes and in 1911 they were living at Long Lane, Finchley, London and another of the sisters, Maryann, a drapery assistant was also living with May and George. London and Middlesex / Edward Heins death in Poplar District
« on: Wednesday 28 November 18 14:49 GMT (UK)  »
Some advice needed please.
GRO death certificate for Edward Heins, aged 55, unmarried, died 26th August 1897.
Superintendent Registrar's District of Poplar
Registrar's Sub-District of Bromley in the County of London.
He died from sarcoma of Kidney in the City Infirmary.
He was a commercial clerk of 30 Harp Alley, City.
Could somebody please advise me if the place he died would have been the Infirmary attached to the City of London Workhouse OR the London Hospital (Royal London)?
I don't understand why he might have died in the infirmary of the workhouse, when he had an address of 30 Harp Alley.
In the 1891 census he was a clerk, living in Victoria House in Whitechapel.
In the 1861 and 1871 census he was living in Glasgow with his mother's family.
In the 1881 census he was still in Glasgow and his widowed mother was with him.
Edward was born in Hamburg, Germany about 1843, his father was German and his mother was Scottish. His parents were married in Liverpool (St Peter's) in 1840.
Any advice about his place of death or burial would be appreciated.

Europe / Scotland to Hamburg - Margaret HEINS
« on: Monday 12 November 18 14:29 GMT (UK)  »
Margaret Cameron was born on the Isle of Mull, Scotland around 1821, the eldest of five children born to Archibald Cameron and his wife Janet Campbell. By 1829 the family had moved to Glasgow.
Margaret married Valentine Heins in St Peter's Anglican Church, Liverpool in May 1840.
In the 1861 and 1871 census Margaret's son Edward Heins was living with his Scottish aunts in Glasgow and he was born around 1843 in Hamburg. There is no trace of Margaret in Scotland until she appears as a widow living with Edward in Glasgow in 1881. In the 1891 census Edward is living in London where he died unmarried in 1896. By 1891 Margaret has returned to Mull where she died in 1901.
Can anyone advise me how I could find out if Margaret and Valentine had any other children who may have been born in Hamburg? Where might she have lived between her marriage in Liverpool in 1840 and her re-appearance in Scotland in 1881?
