Australia / For Better or Worse, Convict Lives Shaped by Transportation - JOSEPH TURVEY
« on: Tuesday 25 September 12 14:30 BST (UK)  »
Hi
It's been a while since this book was mentioned and the old thread seems to have gone dead so I thought I would try re-posting in the hope that someone might have a copy.
I am looking for more info on JOSEPH TURVEY of Pershore, WOR who appears in this book. He was sent to Norfolk Island, Australia  13/5/1845 on board the David Malcolm for his part in the murder of a gamekeeper at the Croome Estate near Pershore. It appears to be a very sad story. His youngest son ended up in the workhouse after he was transported. Joseph sent a letter to his wife (an article appeared in the local paper about it) to say that he would send for her and the children just as soon as he could but I don't think he ever did. If anyone does have the book I wonder if they would be kind enough to tell me what it says about Joseph please? I think he died in a pauper institute in Newtown, Aus, in 1884.
Many thanks.

Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / Date of photo?
« on: Friday 09 March 12 14:49 GMT (UK)  »
Hi everyone

Could someone help me date this photo please? The bride is my grandmother, born 1900, the groom could be one of two husbands. She was married in 1925 and again in 1930. Which year is it most likely to be?

I always thought from the attire that this was her first wedding in 1925, however the groom is the spitting image of my uncle, a child borne from her second marriage in 1930. Very confused!!

If it helps, her first hubby was a railway porter; the second a groom/chauffeur, so both were likely to have a smart, best suit!

Worcestershire Lookup Requests / Kelly's Worcestershire 1924 & 1932 look up's please?
« on: Wednesday 22 February 12 20:18 GMT (UK)  »
Hi everyone

I wonder if sks would mind looking up the following for me please?

Kelly's Worcestershire 1924:
Looking for the private residents listed at 38 Henwick Road, Worcester. (my interest is in Frank Hodges who died at that address in Jan 1926.).

Kelly's Worcestershire 1932:
Looking for private residents listed at 22 Tything (probably The Tything), Worcester. My late mother was born there in Jan 1933 and I wondered whether that was where her recently widowed mother was living or whether she was born at her grandparents' home as was common in those days. Surname was Harding.

If these searches should prove fruitless could anyone suggest where else I can look for street listings for those years? Will there be some at the History Centre (or The Hive as it will be when I am next in Worcester)?

Many thanks.

Radnorshire / COMPLETED Baptised in Evenjobb?
« on: Friday 17 February 12 23:12 GMT (UK)  »
Hi everyone

I am trying to find out more details on my gg grandmother Elizabeth DAVIES. Not an easy job with a surname like that in Wales! Censuses consistently give her birth year as c.1867, and a place of birth as Evenjobb, Radnorshire. I was wondering where she was likely to have been baptised? I have found that there is a church in Evenjobb, St Peter's, but it may not have opened until 1870. Was there another church in the village prior to St Peter's or is she likely to have been baptised in a neighbouring village/town? Also, what denomination was/is St Peter's or any other church anyone may suggest?

Many thanks for your help. I'm running out of ideas (and patience!).

World War Two / WW2 Leading Aircraftsman
« on: Friday 04 November 11 12:14 GMT (UK)  »
Hi everyone

I've just discovered a reference to my ancestor GEORGE OSBORNE LISSENDEN (formerly a school master from Canterbury) in the London Gazette Supplement of 17 October 1944:

ADMINISTRATIVE & SPECIAL DUTIES BRANCH
Appointment to commission.
As Actg. Plt. Offs. on prob. (emergency). 14th September 1944:
Ldg. Acm.
1873306 George Osborne LISSENDEN (183151)

Am I right in assuming that the abbreviations mean "acting pilot officers on probation....... leading aircraftsman"? What would this mean, a quick, possibly temporary promotion to cover losses? And what would have been the role of a leading aircraftsman? Is he likely to have been ground or air crew?

My final question is can we tell from his service number(s) where he would have been based or with which squadron?

Many thanks. I'm quite experienced in WW1 research but WW2, particularly the RAF, is very new to me.

Kent / Whitstable fishing vessels lost at sea
« on: Friday 01 July 11 15:02 BST (UK)  »
Hi everyone

I have 2 ancestors (Whitstable mariners) who were lost at sea and would like to find out what happened to the vessels they were sailing on. Can anyone point me in the right direction please? I've tried Googling and have done a quick search on the Times Online but come up with nothing. Unfortunately I live nowhere near Kent so am unable to look up local newspapers at the RO which might well be my best resource. Is there a book on fishing vessels lost at sea perhaps or a local maritime historian who may be able to help?

STEPHEN LISSENDEN drowned 13 May 1886 Ships name: Mermaid
GEORGE LISSENDEN died 1902 at sea vessel: Diana
HF LISSENDEN died 1910 vessel:Refugio

Many thanks!

Wiltshire / Whitstable fishing vessels lost at sea
« on: Friday 01 July 11 12:47 BST (UK)  »
Hi everyone

I've just discovered from a probate record on ancestry that an ancestor STEPHEN LISSENDEN (a mariner)  of Whitstable died at sea on 13 May 1886. Does anyone have any suggestions of how I can find out more, ie, which fishing vessel went down on that date and perhaps the story of what happened? I've tried Googling, the only other thing that springs to mind is searching newspaper archives at the local RO but unfortunately I live nowhere near Kent.

Any other suggestions?

Many thanks!

Hi everyone

I wonder if sks with full access to findmypast would mind looking up the following for me in the newly added Militia Service Records 1806-1915 please?

GEORGE TINSON b. abt 1865, Pershore, Worcs.

I only have the foundation subscription which allows me to do the search but not look up the actual record, unfortunately. I know that he served and died 17/4/1900 during the Boer War whilst with the KSLI and prior to that would have probably been with the Herefordshire Rifle Volunteers. I thought I had found as much as I was going to find on George but these records *may* give me a little more info.

Many thanks!
Julie
