Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / 3 Photos but are they of the same family
« on: Tuesday 01 January 13 00:37 GMT (UK)  »
A Happy New Year to all,

Hopefully in 2013 I can finally get to the bottom of some family photo's I was given last year.  Photo A is the one I know most about, it is of my GG Grandfather, my Grandmother and her sisters.  I have put the names underneath in the order they are standing.

Photo B and C are the mystery as I'm not 100% sure who they are of, both are postcard photo's and on the back of each there is a handwritten note saying Happy New Year (how appropriate  :) ) from Margaret and Harold.

If Margaret sent the photo's and it seems likely then would they be photo's of herself and her husband or of another family member.  I'm not 100% convinced that the women in B and C is Margaret in photo A.

The only person that i don't have to worry about in photo A is Constance (my grandmother) as she doesn't appear anywhere in B and C.  There is a gap in time between the photo's and my nan was busy with her own family.

I guess i would like other people's opinions on whether the people in the photo's could be the same people.

Many thanks

United States of America / How do I order a copy of a SS-5 form from the US
« on: Monday 03 September 12 20:40 BST (UK)  »
Hi All,

Not sure if I've got the right board but I'm trying to figure out how to order a SS-5 form.  On Ancestry I have located an ancestor in the Social Security Death Index and it says that you can request a copy of the original form for a fee.  The problem I am having is that I need to send a cheque in dollars and arent sure how that will work, plus there is nothing about additional fee's for sending back to the UK.

I checked the US Social Security Office website and there is no online way to request it, I also considered contacting the US Embassy in London as my ancestor did die in the UK but there website just sends me back to the US SSO for any family history enquiries.

I'm hoping that someone may be able to point me in the right direction or else may have already requested one of these forms and can tell me how they did it.

Many thanks

Armed Forces / Can anyone identify this cap badge
« on: Monday 02 July 12 00:15 BST (UK)  »
Evening All,

I think I may be asking the impossible but could anyone identify the cap bade from this photo.  I know it's not the greatest photo and I've tried to pick out as much of the shape as I can.

The photo is of my Great Grandad who served in WW1, as yet i have been unable to locate his service record (Probably destroyed) but if I could just figure out what regiment he was in it may get me a little closer to finding any information thats still out there on his activities during the war.

My Great Grandads name is Samuel Edgar Key and he was born in Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire which is where is lived his whole life.  I have compared the Staffordshire cap badge to this but don't think it looks even close.

Many thanks

Devon / Locating Info on Bakers in Barnstaple
« on: Friday 29 June 12 23:04 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to locate information on a shop that used to be in Barnstaple Devon.

The shop was a bakers and was located on Litchdon Street although I don't know the number.  it was owned by George French (My GGG Grandfather), I belive that the business was in Barnstaple since around 1842 but I can't be sure it was always in Litchdon Street.

In 1882 the business was passed to George French Jnr who carried on running it as a bakers, he was definately still there in 1911 as the census shows it.

I would love to locate a photo of the store front or a street photo with the shop visible but so far I haven't been able to find any photos of the street that provide this.

Any suggestions would be greatly recieved, or if anyone has in there posession a photo and would be willing to share that would be even better.

Many thanks

Evening All,

I am trying to get to the bottom of a mistery of what happened to my GG Grandmothers first daughter Ethel Amelia Tooth, sometime after 1891 she went to America and eventually married her cousin.

I better start at the beginning, my GG Grandmother was Emma French born in Devon, she moved to Staffordshire around 1882 and married her deceased sisters husband Thomas James Tooth.  Together they had a daughter Ethel Amelia Tooth.  For some reason this marriage did not last and my GG Grandmother took up residence with another man sometime before 1891 and had another 2 children with him, one of these children was my great grandad.

In 1891 Emma Tooth and her daughter Ethel are living with this other man and her other children but just 9 years after this I have found that Ethel has moved to America and is living in New Jersey with her father Thomas James Tooth.

In 1910 another member of the French family arrives into america, Ernest French is the son of George French (Emma's brother) which makes Ethel and Ernest cousins.  According to Ernests WW1 army record he married Ethel in 1912 and they go on to have 2 children.  I have managed to track the family down all living together between 1900 and 1930.

I have aslo found the arrival records into the port of New York for Ernest in 1910, infact there seems to be at least another 2 records of him coming back into the country, the second time was in 1919 which matches the date he left the army.  the third time is a little bit of a puzzle as it has Ernest coming back to New York in 1930 from Bermuda.  Ernest was a butler to a private family so it may have been possible that he travelled to Bermuda with them.

Below is a time line for the events of Ethel Amelia Tooth and Thomas James Tooth.  As you can see my problem at the moment is locating records of there arrival into the US and each census gives a different arrival year.  I've done searches on all the years and can find nothing that corrilates.  I believe that the '1888' which was entered for Ethel in the 1900 census is incorrect as I already have her living in England with her mother.

I did locate 1 record for a Thomas Tooth who arrived in New York 09/06/1892 on the ship 'City of New York'.  It has him listed as born in 1855 and his last residence as Hanley which is in Stoke-on-Trent.  The problem I have with this is that it matches no dates of what was written on any of the US census's and Ethel is not with him, I assume at 8 years old she would have been listed as a passenger.

Any help in trying to trace when they travelled would be much appreciated as I think I've run out of dead ends to look at now, short of trawling through every ships log between 1888 and 1900 that went to new York in case there names were mistranscribed I'm pretty much stuck.

I'm also having a headache in finding other US records such as Ethel and Ernest's marriag certificate and any death certificates.  I couldn't find an online resource that helped and am now stuck, how do I get hold of a certificate when I haven't got any details of it.  I did read that you can request a search but you have to prove you are related and i can't do that as my GG Grandad and GG Grandmother never married.

Armed Forces / Identify Uniform and Possibly Date
« on: Tuesday 29 May 12 21:52 BST (UK)  »
I am hoping that someone can help identify the uniform in the 2 pictures below.  I was sent the photo's by my dad that is sure they are members of the my mums family.  Unfortunately as she's passed away I can't ask her so I sm hoping that by knowing what unifrorm it was and a pottential date may narrow it down for me.

Many thanks

Staffordshire / The game of skittles in the potteries
« on: Tuesday 15 May 12 20:26 BST (UK)  »
I was visiting family over the weekend and was given a copy of the photograph below.  My aunt told me that it was of a skittles team around the East Vale / Longton area.  In the photo is my grandad and great grandad (back row 4th and 5th from the left as you look at the photo  :) )  The original photo is actually a postcard but there is nothing on the back not even a date.

I was hoping that someone may have seen the photo before or be able to provide any more light on which team it may be.  From the research so far most of the teams were from public houses.  If not then would anyone be able to give a rough date to when this may have been taken?

Many thanks

Cheshire / Cemetary Photograph Wanted
« on: Monday 30 April 12 19:07 BST (UK)  »
I am hoping that someone can help me as I'm trying to get hold of a photograph of Tabley Hill cemetery in Knutsford.  I'm specifically interested in one that shows section G of the cememtary plan below as this is where my GG Grandmother is buried.

Unfortunately there is no head stone or marker but I thought a photo of her final resting place would be nice.  I was due to be in Chester next week and hoped to visit Knutsford as well but my plans have been put on hold and I'm unsure when I'll ever make it now  :(

If someone has a photograph or is willing to take a photograph that they don't mind sharing with me then I would be really greatful.

Many thanks

Michelle
