If anyone is visiting the Gloucester Archives in the near future, would you be able to do a search of Cheltenham Workhouse Admission Registers between 25 April and 2 June 1904.  It appears that they still exist for this period - with gaps!

Edith Kate Barton (b. 1879, Cheltenham)
Sydney Owen Barton (b. 14 April 1904, Alderton)

25 April 1904 - Mother and son taken from Alderton to Winchcombe Workhouse (records destroyed in a fire)
?? Transferred from Winchcombe to Cheltenham Workhouse
2 June 1904 - Son baptised at Cheltenham St Paul Church - address Cheltenham Workhouse

By the 1911 Census they were living in London where fortunately they both thrived!  If you have time for further searches, it would also be interesting to discover when and under what circumstances they moved from Gloucestershire.

Thank you in advance for any help.

Hi

I would be really interested to find out if my grandmother's brother and sister who emigrated to Australia - separately - in the 1920's have any living relatives.

Their parents were Peter McLeod and Christina (nee Reith).

John McLeod.  Born Newport, Fife on 6th January 1906.  Departed from London to Melbourne on 15th January 1924 aboard the MORETON BAY with his occupation given as Labourer.  The only Australian record I have found online is an index of his Army Service Record from 1939-1948 which spells his last name as Macleod and confirms his wife's name as Beryl - about the only fact that we already knew.  The place of enlistment was Esperance, WA - something of a surprise as the family story was that he settled in Townsville!  I have ordered this from the National Archives but as the status is "not yet examined" it may not be available for 90 days.

Jane (or Jean) McLeod. Born Newport, Fife on 17th June 1903.  Departed from London to Melbourne on 24th May 1928 aboard the SS BERRIMA intending to settle in Australia and we are fairly certain that she did. Her occupation was given as a Typist.  We don't know where she lived or whether or not she married and had children.

If any kind person out there in RootsChat land can offer and help or guidance it would be greatly appreciated.  I have researched most other branches quite extensively but until now this has been a genealogical "black hole"!

Thank you in advance.

Gill

World War One / Additional Information in MH106 file at NA?
« on: Saturday 24 October 15 12:59 BST (UK)  »
I have found a WW1 hospital record for my grandfather on Forces War Records under the National Archives reference MH106/285 which gives some basic information about his admission.

His condition was "effects of cold feet" and - as it caused him to miss the Second Battle of Ypres - may well have saved his life! His army record says "frostbite" but a letter from another soldier in his regiment around that time (Feb 1915) indicated that it might have been an early case of trench foot.

Does anyone know what is contained in the original records - ie. is it worth a visit to Kew (about an hour away once the rugby is finished!) to find out more?

Many thanks for any advice.

Attached is a very interesting picture of a parade, the focus of which seems to be three well-dressed women who don't look too happy and may even have their hands tied.  My first thought was that they might be suffragettes but comments on my Flickr page have disputed this - with good justification.

I don't know that it's Yorkshire, but it looks as if it could be the north of England - and Yorkshire, being the largest county, seems a good place to start!  Although unposted and unaddressed, the card is written from a mother to her daughter who is on holiday in the Lake District with a "Miss Sutcliff".  On the 1911 Census most Miss Sutcliff's aged 15-40 are living in Yorkshire and Lancashire - Todmorden, Tadcaster, Huddersfield, Wakefield, Halifax, Goole, Chorley, Bolton, Manchester and Oldham.

A very interesting collection of hats in the crowd which is almost entirely female, although the boys could be out of shot on the photographer's side of the road.  Their mood does not appear to be particularly celebratory and includes some particularly sour faces!

Clarke's Melox Dog Food and Armitage's Chicken Food in the advertisements are products with nationwide distribution - Melox even boasts a Royal Warrant to the King and Prince of Wales - so do not seem to narrow down the location to a particular region.

If anyone can help I would dearly love to know who the women are and what is going on - and would be happy to provide a higher resolution image on request.

Kent / Wedding of Bert & Alice, 1915, Kent??
« on: Saturday 26 November 11 09:49 GMT (UK)  »
This is a long shot, but it is amazing what Roots Chat contributors come up with - and someone must know!!

Attached is a delightful postcard of a wedding between Bert and Alice which took place in 1915 according to the note on the back.  I would really like to find out where it was taken.  I purchased it thinking that there was enough information to find out the names and location but so far I have not been able to do so.  The seller suggested it might be West Kent because the white clapboard house in the background is typical of this area, so that's where I'm starting!

The name of the publisher looks like "Duttell, London", but I think it may be Arthur William Durrell who had a studio at 157 Norwood Road, Herne Hill, from around 1900-1929.

Other clues include a house called Alpha Cottage, WW1 uniforms which could identify the regiment - maybe indicating the location - and a note saying "Aunt Martha and myself there".  If you look closely, you can see that a lady to the left of the couple has been marked with a blue cross.

If anyone can help I would be delighted to hear from you.

Ireland / Mulshaw Ancestors in Ireland?
« on: Sunday 06 November 11 15:01 GMT (UK)  »
Has anyone found any Irish records containing the surname Mulshaw or similar variant?

According to the 1841 Census for London my ancestor Daniel Mulshaw was born in Ireland around 1799.  There are several other people with the same surname living in the East End of London in the 1800's who were also born in Ireland.

However, there is no indication as to which part of Ireland they came from so if anyone has any information on this subject I would be very interested to hear from you.

Berwickshire / Does anyone have a connections with Purves Hall in Eccles, Berwickshire?
« on: Saturday 05 November 11 09:39 GMT (UK)  »
My great-grandfather, Nathaniel Johnson, worked as a Groom/Coachman for the Home Family in Berwickshire and lived at Purves Hall (1901) and Marchmont (1911).

If anyone has any connection to this area - Purves Hall in particular - I would be very interested to hear from you.
