I'm hoping someone can give me an idea of the age of this photograph please? I think it is a four generation photograph of Wm, Wm, Wm and Wm Colin Gregory but others say the man sitting down is not a relation, why would he be in the photo if he wasn't?

Anyway I think the child is Wm Colin born 1896, others think he is the one standing behind him in the uniform. I'd also love to know if anyone can identify the uniform but it is not very clear.

If it is a four generation photo then it would have been taken before 1903, so a general idea of the date of the photo would be appreciated thank you.

Essex / Where is Sunborn, Essex?
« on: Friday 19 January 18 11:01 GMT (UK)  »
Back in about 1793 Isaac BROWN was born in a place called Sunborn in Essex according to his entry in the 1851 census.

I have tried EVERYTHING I can think of to find where Sunborn might be but so far it's eluding me. Mr Google seems to think I want to book into a very overpriced Sunborn Yacht Hotel!

I've even looked to see if there is anyone else who says they were born in Sunborn, Essex in any of the census and out of the hundreds of people in them all there are five who say they were born in either Sunborn or King Sunborn which is in Hampshire, one from Sunborn in Huntingdonshire and another in Suffolk.

Google Maps has never heard of any of them apart from the Luxury Yacht in London.

British History Online was no help either.

The old maps in the National Library of Scotland doesn't know it either although they did give me a list of alternatives and one of them was King's Somborne which is in Hampshire so I'm guessing that's where most of the people in the census were from.

Which doesn't help me with Sunborn in Essex! Isaac Brown died in 1858 so that's the only census I have his birthplace in. In 1841 and his wife in the next three census was living in various places in London with all their children being baptised at St George in the East, Tower Hamlets or St Leonard's Church in Shoreditch.

I'd like to look for him on SEAX but without indices it would take me forever to search through all the available parishes, I need to know which parish Sunborn is in, if indeed there is such a place in Essex!

HELP please......

cheers....Dawn

Warwickshire Lookup Requests / London Road Civic Cemetery, Coventry - WILSON
« on: Monday 01 May 17 08:30 BST (UK)  »
Does anyone know if the MIs for the above cemetery are available to search online please? I've found endless information on the Cemetery but not having any luck in finding the indices to search.

Or maybe someone is able to do a lookup in a resource they own?

I'm interested in finding if there are anymore details for a John WILSON who was buried on the 23 Dec 1851 aged 69, and that's all I know.

My John Wilson was born in Dunbrook, Longnor, Staffordshire in 1782 and I've been hunting for him for years, I have found him in the 1851 census living in Aston, near Birmingham, Warwickshire, aged 69, a builder & cabinet maker born in Dunbrook, Longnor with his wife Jemima aged 63 born in Birmingham.

I simply cannot find either of them in the 1841 or 1861 census! I've just stumbled over this burial in the London Rd Civic Cemetery, right name, right age, so now I need to know if there are any more details on this burial that would help me to say yes it's him?

Help needed please......Dawn

James Williams was born about 1841, married when he was 52 to Alice Jane Chuck (of Marlborough, New Zealand) aged 26, don't know if she was first wife or not yet. I have a collection of family photos and James and eldest son Victor are the only ones named in the photos. I'm having trouble working them all out as the date of the photo in my mind just doesn't fit the ages of his children and/or grandchildren.
If someone could date this photo a bit more accurately I'd be obliged thank you - James is the man back left with the full beard. All of the photos are on postcards and some of them have F. Thomas Photo printed on the front in white, I haven't been able to find anything on photographer F Thomas (possibly around Upper Hutt area) as yet.

This is a photo of Mrs Burrows and her two granddaughters - if anyone could help date this photo I think I might know who Mrs Burrows was.

It's a postcard photo and I'm hoping she'll turn out to be the person who I think she is who was born in 1857 in Lancashire. So far I have only identified one granddaughter for her who was born in 1908.

If anyone is able to help with the postcard number on the back I've included that too, the number is 864I (uppercase letter I not the number 1).

Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / Date photograph please
« on: Tuesday 15 April 14 03:29 BST (UK)  »
I need help in identifying who this family is and as there is no date on the back of the photo dating it will help immensely.

It was found with two letters that were sent from Wigan, Lancashire in 1902, to Thomas LEE who at the time was living in Penrose in Auckland, New Zealand, sent by his sister Ellen MAJOR, letters dated 1 and 11 of Sep 1902.

Unfortunately the NZ  stamp on the back of the envelopes says they arrived on the 13 & 14 Oct 1902 and Thomas had died on the 8 Oct 1902 so he never got to read them.

Whether the photo was originally sent with one of the letters or at another time is unknown to me so please don't let the date of the letters put you off. On the back of the photo is written 'just a snapshot from your ever loving sister' and wishing him a Happy Xmas etc. Also written on the back in the same handwriting in the corner of the photo is 'Jim'. Whether that is the name of the man in the photo is unknown but it seems likely.

There are two James men in the family, one her son-in-law and the other her grandson so dating would help me in placing who they are - I'm ever hopeful anyway!

Could someone please help with dating this photograph to the nearest decade and also how old you think the woman might be?

The photographer, Daniel Jones, is listed in the Liverpool Directories from 1860 at 11 Church St, by 1875 he'd added premises at 66 Bold St, from 1878 Bold St is the only address listed in the directories, the last entry at Bold St is in 1893, from 1896 he is no longer listed in Liverpool.

I've also added the back of the photo which says she is 'Aunt Elinor Mrs William Ellis Clough' - at least that is my interpretation of the writing. There might be an S at the end of William and the S at the end of Ellis could be an O with I suspect the letter T missing turning the word into Elliot.

My problem being that I can find only one William Ellis Clough and he was born in 1901, somewhat too late for the woman in the photograph I fear. I did find a William Elliot Clough born in 1829 but he doesn't seem to have married an Elinor/Eleanor/Ellen/Ellena and he disappears off the face of the earth after the 1851 census!

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Deciphering Seaman's Papers please - COMPLETED
« on: Wednesday 25 September 13 13:20 BST (UK)  »
Can anyone tell me what the abbreviations mean on these seaman records I picked up from the UK archives please? I mainly would like to know what happened to him as the last I found him was in the 1881 census, after that he disappeared, no death reg for him, no more sightings in any census, zilch!

I"ll add an enlargement of the part I'm really interested in, in case it's hard to read. I know the St Vincent was a training ship and it looks like he served for 5 months on that when he was 15, and then in 1885 he signed up for 10 years, would that be correct? I have no idea what the rest of it means except that he was a fair haired, blue eyed short person!

Horace was my grandfather's brother, the only one out of 12 children I haven't been able to find anymore about after this document.

« on: Friday 23 August 13 07:13 BST (UK)  »
For the life of me I cannot get a grip on the first name on this baptism.

Is anyone able to help me please, I was unable to enlarge it anymore without it being blurred &/or pixelated. I thought it was Sampson at first until I noticed she's a girl!
