The Common Room / What's Wrong With You ??

I spend enormous amounts of time on two hobbies -- photography and genealogy. This link covers most of my fears for the future:

Census and Resource Discussion / Findmypast alert blocks me trying to search
« on: Tuesday 31 January 17 18:05 GMT (UK)  »
I have just tried doing a search on Findmypast. I know what I am doing there and have been a user for many years.

However today I am blocked from doing any BMD search because of a silly thing that comes up which takes me down to the infant level and yields me no useful info.

Even clicking on the “Advanced Search” just takes me to the page I would normally see but the damn pop-up rears its ugly head again.

Does anyone know how to get round this latest “improvement” in their service?

I should add that a complaint to their Customer Service address elicited a suggestion to go to a link about “getting-started” with FindMyPast.

Caernarvonshire / North Wales Obituary 1946
« on: Sunday 27 March 16 18:03 BST (UK)  »
I am still chasing elusive family members to get round a brick wall!
Does anybody have any idea of where to find an obituary or similar notice for

Evan Jones, born Penygroes 25 July 1872, died Talysarn 15 April 1946?

The most likely candidate would be the Caernarfon and Denbigh Herald but many years seem to be missing.
The idea here is to try and see the names of the family listed in the notice.
English or Welsh I can handle both.
Thanks

US Lookup Requests / Emily Lertner
« on: Monday 07 July 14 16:36 BST (UK)  »
Can anyone please help with some basic info on an “Emily Lertner”. As part of a different search I am trying to eliminate/verify a branch in a family tree.

The 1940 US Census shows her living in Ward 21 Scranton, PA with  Harry Lertner and a daughter Evelyn. Emily was born around 1902 in Wales, Harry around 1901 in PA, and Evelyn around 1922 in PA.

I have searched the microfilm records of Ward 21 Scranton for the 1930 Census and cannot find the name Lertner. Nor can I find any record of marriage/immigration or anything else in that name.

My focus at this time is trying to find Emily’s maiden name, place of birth in Wales and when she married Harry (an assumption here).

Any assistance would be appreciated.

Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / Clothing Date Check Please
« on: Tuesday 30 April 13 17:24 BST (UK)  »
Can any of our clothing experts help to date this picture ??
Regarding the pic, it is a photo of the original, now long gone. Assuming it was not resized, the overall size of the old image is 2 ½” x 4”, with rounded corners.

It is thought to be my wife’s maternal grandmother and an unknown child, possibly mid 1899.

I would appreciate confirmation or correction if possible.
Thanks

Armed Forces / Uniform Identification 2nd Boer War ??
« on: Friday 29 March 13 23:10 GMT (UK)  »
Can anyone help identify this uniform??
A friend has asked me to touch up the attached photo of an ancestor, and I can do that reasonably well, but I am left with questions on the ancestor.

Supposedly this is Thomas Osborne, born 2Q 1878 Merthyr Tydfil. My friend tells me that this is his picture from the Boer War, however I thought everyone had variations on pith helmets. It might be peacetime but the background is certainly not South Wales!.

These are the best pics I can offer. Neither the original negative or print is available and I am told that some other photo-butcher has worked on it removing a horse! and a "long knife" from the guy's hand. This image has been shot under cross-polarized light with a D800 as I did not want to open the frame and it has a convex shaped glass bowl in the front.

Thanks in advance

US Lookup Requests / 1930 NY or NJ Lookup Request Emily Jones
« on: Thursday 01 March 12 16:28 GMT (UK)  »
Hi, I am trying to trace an Emily Jones, born 1902 in Talysarn, Carnarvonshire, Wales, UK.
I think she emigrated from Liverpool on the SS Carmania on 24/25th August 1923, and landed in New York on 3rd September 1923. She was single and listed as a Domestic Servant. Unfortunately the Ellis Island database is missing about 1200 records from that voyage, including Emily’s.

If anyone has any different source of information or can do a lookup in the 1930 census for New York or New Jersey it would be greatly appreciated.

Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / Date Request Caernarfon COMPLETED
« on: Monday 28 November 11 19:45 GMT (UK)  »
I would appreciate comments on the attached pic. I am interested in guesses about the date, based upon the clothing, and whether or not this was a real house or a studio backdrop.

Almost certainly taken in Caernarfon vicinity, the photo is 4x6" and is the thickness of a British postcard. Unfortunately it is glued onto a thicker piece of card, and there is no other indication other than the front image.

Thanks, Ian999
