Dumfriesshire / James Kirkpatrick
« on: Thursday 30 December 10 16:00 GMT (UK)  »
Can anyone help me with any suggestions to where James Kirkpatrick died!   I have spent a fortune on SP but cannot find his death.
The details I have as follows:
James Kirkpatrick married Agnes Gracie in 1847 at Closeburn.   She died in 1887 at Cample, Closeburn.   They had daughter Janet who married James McKinnell.   They also had a daughter Agnes who was unmarried and stayed at home with James until she died in 1894.   He registered her death and they were at Closeburn Mill at that time.   A granddaughter Mary also stayed with them.   She was a daughter of his son James.   She married John Clark in 1892 (again in Closeburn) and they are on the 1901 census at Closeburn Mill but no sign of James Snr.   After he registered his daughter Agnes death in 1894 I cannot find any trace of him despite various searches and spelling variations on SP.
His wife is shown on a gravestone in Closeburn old Cemetery with other members of the family but not him.   I reckon he must have died between 1894 and 1901 unless I have just not found him on 1901 census.   He is shown as aged 71 years on 1891 census and I have him on 1841, 51 and 81 census also.
Anyone any ideas how else I can look for his death.   I am trying to prove his parentage as he registered Susan Kirkpatrick's death in 1861 at Cample and under his signature is written 'son to Susan' so I assume he is illegitimate.
Any ideas.  Thanks.

Dumfriesshire / John McGill death
« on: Saturday 24 October 09 13:49 BST (UK)  »
I am looking for the death of James McGill - he is shown as 44 years on the 1861 census at Berryland, Holywood.   I can't find his death on SP searching in Dumfries area.   I know he was married to Mary Laurie in 1837 at Holywood and had 3 daughters.   She died before 1851.

I want to find his mother's name - I know her first name was Jean on 1841 census and she died sometime between 1841 and 1851. His father was Adam McGill and I think he died in 1869 at Rowantree House near Thornhill.   No parents are shown as he was in the poorhouse and the governor signed the death.   He was born in Ireland so I don't think I will get any further with him.   He had a child Margaret around 1847 to a Agnes Walker but they never married and she is shown as a foundling on her death so don't think I will get any further back with her either!  She died in 1895.

Any ideas!

Dumfriesshire / Margaret McGill
« on: Thursday 10 September 09 20:02 BST (UK)  »
I have the birth of John  McGill on 28/07/1872 at Dunscore to Margaret McGill (no father).  Can anyone help me find out more on Margaret.  I tried to find her on 1881 census with John but no luck.  John married Christina Campbell in 1891 at Dumfries and Margaret is still shown as single and alive then.  As she is shown as a domestic servant I suppose she could have come from anywhere and worked in Dunscore.  Any ideas?

Lanarkshire / St Mungo Cemetery
« on: Monday 13 April 09 16:18 BST (UK)  »
I have a burial record of Jean Gordon, wife of John McNeil, Weaver who died 29th March, 1844 aged 45 yrs..  It shows she is buried in common ground in St. Mungo Cemetery.   Can anyone tell me if someone buried in common ground would have a stone erected?  Also where exactly St. Mungo's is situated.  I assume it is in the Gorbals area. Any info would be appreciated.  Her husband John did not die until 1867 in the city poorhouse so assume they didn't have much money.  Where would I find the poorhouse records to see if they give any more info on him as he is registered without parents being shown?

Thanks.

Dumfriesshire / McKinlay/McGenlie family
« on: Tuesday 04 November 08 20:34 GMT (UK)  »
I have been trying to trace the McGenlie family but it is very difficult as they kept changing the spelling of the surname.  In 1841 census they are McGenlie staying at the Swyre at Dunscore as follows:
James McGenlie 50 yrs Agricultural Lab. born Dunscore
Robert McGenlie 40 yrs  ditto
Jane McGenlie 30 yrs      ditto
Philip McGenlie 25 yrs                     ditto
Isabella Laurie 13 yrs. born Dunscore

The Robert and Jane are siblings of Thomas McGenley who married Mary McMurdo (my line).   The Isabella is the daughter of Jane.  I have the birth of Isabella (1827 Dunscore) and also the marriage of Jane to Joseph Laurie in 1827 at Moffat.   There are no other births to be found of McKinlay/McGinleys in Dunscore.   Robert, another brother called Daniel and Jane all ended up in the Southern Counties Asylum at various times and Jane died there in 1877.  Daniel died in 1882 at Swyre Cottage and Robert in 1867 at same place (both with the surname McKinlay).

In 1851 Jane and brother Robert are living together at Swyre Beck in Dunscore.  Jane is a widow, Daniel is in the Asylum and there is no trace of James who I presume died before this.  I am trying to find the marriage of Isabella who is shown as married on the Dunscore poor records for her mother Jane but does not give her married name.  I cannot find her death without this.  I followed a Isabella Laurie who married Thomas Kirkpatrick in Keir but she is not the correct one.

Can anyone suggest how I can find out who she married?   I have tried OPR's and Scotlandpeople from 1855 but not luck.

Thomas died in 1856 at Penpont and his parents were James McGinnley and Jeanne McMillan.   Another brother William stayed at Craigturrah in Tynron and married twice.  I have his death in 1875.

Any ideas how to find Isabella or Philip - I don't know who he was.

As you can see the name changed frequently which doesn't help!!

Lanarkshire / John McNeil
« on: Tuesday 28 August 07 20:24 BST (UK)  »
Trying to find the death and parents of John McNeil.   In 1841 cenus he is shown at Soho Street, St. Thomas, Glasgow as aged 40 cotton handloom weaver with wife Jean m.s. Gordon and children:
William 14 years,
Mary 10 years.
Marion aged 8 years.
Charles 3 years.

Also found their marriage in Govan on 24th Feb 1826.

On 1851 census he is shown in Calton with new wife Agnes, Marion, Charles, and new child Elizabeth 1 year.  Also shown two stepchildren John and Robert Miller.    Cannot find him in 1861 but found Elizabeth with an aunt and uncle - Joseph and Margaret Miller.

After searching I found in 1861 an Agnes McNeil, Widow, Domestic Servant who could be his second wife.   I don't know her maiden name but assume she was married to someone Miller.
Also found marriage of Marion McNeil in 1857 in the Central District to Hugh Auchie, Weaver and John was alive then.

Searched SP for his death between 1857 and 1861 but no luck.   They seem to stayed around Glasgow.   Anyone have any suggestions as I have spent a fortune on Scotlands People with no success.

Lanarkshire / Murray in Crawford
« on: Tuesday 03 July 07 14:15 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to find out the parents of John Murray, tailor, Crawford and his spouse Catherine Martin, Crawfordjohn.   On 1841 census John is shown as 75 and Catherine 65 yrs.  They don't show up in 1851 census.  Their banns were called 4th April, 1813 and son James born 25th Sept. 1813.   They don't appear to have had any more children.  Has anyone info. on memorial inscriptions for that area - can't find their deaths.  Son James ended up Dalry, Kirkcudbright but no sign of parents living with him.
