World War One / Help with ancestor in Army Service Corps
« on: Wednesday 11 October 17 12:17 BST (UK)  »
I've just found a service record for an ancestor who enlisted dec 1914 in the army service corps. (Presumably because he was a motor driver). It says he embarked for France 6 Aug 1916 (British expeditionary force). before this on the record i can decipher a note saying (I think) 34 section HAMT. earlier it also says Guildford ASCMT
Can anyone give me any clues about using this info to find out a little more? Basically I'd just like to find out where in France he was sent to and maybe which battles his unit helped with.
My skills when it comes to military records are very poor!
Thanks very much

Antrim / Civil record (birth) in Belfast (Halpin)
« on: Thursday 22 June 17 20:26 BST (UK)  »
Apologies if there is an obvious answer to this question - I'm new to Irish genealogy! I want to order the birth certificate of a John Michal Halpin, born AMJ 1920 in Belfast (I found an index record via family search and ancestry vol 1 / page 244 and a family member recalls his birthday as 6 May but has no other info). I am wanting to identify his parents and any other info.
However, the sites I have found for ordering a copy of the certificate require the mother's maiden name (I read somewhere that this was given in the index after 1903) - but the record I have found does not give this.
Can I still order the certificate?
Is there another index I can search which might provide the maiden name?
I'm also a little confused as to which is the best site to order a certificate via - there seem to be quite a few!
Any guidance would be appreciated, many thanks

Armed Forces / Boer War help
« on: Friday 07 April 17 08:17 BST (UK)  »
Hi, my great-great grandfather Henry Newman served as a gunner with the RHA - he had joined by 1891 (according to census) and also gives this as his occupation on the birth certificate of his first daughter in 1894 (born in aldershot). Henry was born 1873 in Shoreditch but spent most of his domestic life in Tottenham. His wife was Catherine/Kate
I believe he went to South Africa because we have a photo of an ancestor (unnamed) taken in a studio in cape town SA wearing a RHA jacket, plus he is not with his family on the 1901 census and I can't find him elsewhere on the census.
I once found a possible regimental number: H Newman, 78747 gunner royal battery RHA - though I made a note I can't find it any more!
He later enlisted age 42 to serve in WW1 - I found his service record, Royal Field Artillery, number 49024 (looks like he served with the 37th division then went into the reserves) and the record does show an earlier discharge from the army on 10 June 1902.
Can anyone shed any more light? The WW1 record is very hard for me to decipher much! And what about his earlier service? I'd love to know more - are there any recommended websites or anything? I can't find anything on,ine via the national archives - and I'm living overseas so can conduct Internet based research only.any tips gratefully received! Thanks

Armed Forces / RA uniform or not?
« on: Saturday 30 July 16 22:01 BST (UK)  »
Hi, I'm wondering if this guy could be wearing a uniform related, to the Royal Artillery? The reverse of the photo shows that it was taken at a studio in Cape Town. I have a great great grandfather born 1873 who I believe probably served in the Boer War. He was a driver, then gunner, with the RFA and/or RHA (I've found records referring to both) in the 1890s and in 1901 he is not with his family on the UK census (not can I find him elsewhere). Does his outfit look like any kind of RFA or RHA uniform? (The only other ancestor I know who was in Cape Town was a musician born c. 1856, who was definitely there in 1898 and 1901 - but perhaps this guy looks a little young to be him?)
Any help is appreciated, thanks.

London & Middlesex Lookup Requests / Cyprian Cotterell, Westminster, 1778
« on: Tuesday 23 February 16 07:35 GMT (UK)  »
Hello,  I'm looking for a baptism for a Cyprian Cotterell / Cottrell who was born circa 1780 and later lived in Wokingham (1841 census indicates he wasn't born in Berkshire but he died 1848/9). There does seem to be some family movement to and from London.

I have found a baptism that looks very promising, in 1778 at St George Hanover Square, Westminster.

Does anyone have any further details.

Kent Lookup Requests / Frederick Luther Ansell birth mystery
« on: Saturday 19 April 14 23:13 BST (UK)  »
Hello, I am trying to confirm the parents of Frederick Luther Ansell born 1908 in Kent (Sevenoaks reg district). It has always been believed that his parents were Luther Ansell and Mabel (May) Fuller. It has come to light that at least one of his siblings was actually a cousin, son of Henry and Emily Ansell. So far I've found no confirmed connection for Frederick Luther Ansell to Luther and Mabel (who were married in Godstone Surrey and whose 2 later children according to registers we're born in Godstone in 1912 and 1916.)

Will be ordering his birth certificate but wondered if anyone had access to Kent baptism records in the Sevenoaks area, in particular Cowden, Kent, where according to the 1911 census, a Frederick Ansell was born to Henry and Emily Ansell in 1909 approx. Basically I,m trying to establish how many of these 'siblings' were actually the children of Henry and Emily rather than Luther and Mabel! (Henry being Luther's oldest brother).

Thanks very much

Sussex Lookup Requests / Ansell birth, Sussex
« on: Saturday 19 April 14 23:03 BST (UK)  »
Hello, I wondered if anyone has access to baptism records in the Lewes area. I'm hoping to identify / confirm the parents of a William Henry J Ansell, born 28 May 1903. Reg district Lewes. I believe his parents are Henry and Emily Ansell, and if correct, they state his birthplace as Cookbridge, Sussex on the 1911 census. But I'd like to try and verify this, they just list their son as 'William' born c 1904.

The William Henry J Ansell I am looking for definitely married an Ivy Spenser in Royston Herts in 1934 and died near Hitchin Herts in 1997. Thanks very much

London & Middlesex Lookup Requests / Edward James Jones, confectioner
« on: Friday 22 November 13 10:03 GMT (UK)  »
Hi, I have an ancestor called Edward James Jones, born in Shoreditch c. 1826 to 1829. I have found him in 1851 on the census, at 51 Richard St, St George in the East. He married Emma Dabbs at Spitalfields in 1848 and they had at least 4 children: Mary 1848, Emma 1850, Walter 1854 and Elizabeth Ann (my 2 x great grandmother) 1860.

Can anyone locate him or the family in 1861 or 1871? I have a vague recollection of potentially finding him with another woman\wife at one stage and the children split between two families but I cant find this now, or my notes! Jones is not an easy name to trace but the occupation is quite unusual. I'd love to find out more.

Also trying to locate him in 1841, and identify possible parents. I have noted that his father was Edward James Jones also, but not sure where I got this from, maybe marriage record but I didnt note occupation...

His daughter Elizabeth Ann married Henry James Cole in 1886.

Any info or ideas at all appreciated! Thanks very much.
