Armed Forces / Boer War
« on: Thursday 14 March 13 21:48 GMT (UK)  »
Hello

I was wondering if anyone could help me.  I have an ancestor Fred Bowley on the 1901 census attached to the above regiment but in Victoria Barracks in Portsmouth.  I can find no military records for him and am wondering if they were stationed at Victoria Barracks on their way to The Boer War?  Any suggestions how I go about getting some more information would be great'

Thanks
Louise

Armed Forces / Army Service Records Before WW1
« on: Monday 07 May 12 23:45 BST (UK)  »
Hi

I am looking for a relative, George Young, who was born in Reading Berkshire.  I have his WW1 service records in which he states that his previous military service was with the Royal Berks Regiment 2nd Batallion.  I also have a 1911 census for a George Young in India which states that he was married.

I have a family member who says that he served in India and some of his children were born there so it is likely I have the correct person.

My question is, is there any records or sites where I can get more information, ie service records for his army career before he rejoined in 1915 and birth records for any children?

Many thanks
Louise

Essex / Chaplins - Colchester
« on: Saturday 11 February 12 18:19 GMT (UK)  »
Hello

I'm looking into Wallace Edward Chaplin b1882 Colchester.  I can see him on all the census returns and from the 1911 census can confirm that he is married to Florence Maude, marriage about 1908.  When I look for the marriage records I can't find anything for Wallace Edward Chaplin but found in England & Wales, FreeBMD Marriage Index: 1837-1915, 1908 > Q3-Jul-Aug-Sep > C > 7 an entry for William Edward Chaplin who cross references with a Florence Maude Sadler.  Interestingly there are 2 William Edward Chaplins, 1 from West Ham & the other from Lambeth.  Is it possible that the West Ham William is my Wallace? and that there is an error in the index?

Best regards

Hello

This is now my last attempt to discover the father of a relative.  Edward Albert Holmes born in 1860 to Ann Holmes in Froxfield Wiltshire.  I understand that sometimes the name of the father was written in the actual parish register.

Could anyone help with this line of enquiry?

Best regards

Berkshire / Gladys Rose Young m Bowley
« on: Monday 05 December 11 22:20 GMT (UK)  »
Hello

I am trying to start the tree for my mother in law Gladys Rose Young.  I know nothing other than she married Leslie James Bowley in 1938 in Reading and that she lived in Reading thereafter.

I don' know if she was born in Reading or not.

I know that she worked at the jam factory in Reading but can't even find reference to there being a jam factory in Reading.  I think from what she told me it was located in the Rose Kiln Lane area.

I think she may have had a brother called Vic and a stepfather, Strong.

She has since passed so I am unable to check anything else.

Does anybody have any information that could get my investigation underway please.

Best regards
Louise

Hello

I have and Edward Albert Holmes / Mary Eliza Sawyer marriage certificate here for 14th Dec 1912, Newbury.  Edwards age is 49years and he is a widdower.  His address is Lambourn Woodlands Lambourn.  The interesting thing is that there is no fathers name or profession on the certificate.  Could anyone have any information to help me continue back along this line.

Many thanks

Berkshire Lookup Requests / Sawyer Lambourn 1911 census
« on: Friday 02 December 11 22:17 GMT (UK)  »
Hi

I have a Mary Eliza Sawyer aged 30 (I think) married to Edward Albert Holmes aged 49 in 1912 Hungerford.  Her father is listed as Robert Sawyer, Profession Shepherd.  Mary & Robert have listed their address as Lambourn Woodlands Lambourn.  I can't find them on the 1901 census and wondered if anyone would be able to see them on the 1911 census.

Regards
Louise

Wiltshire / KITE family Wiltshire
« on: Friday 02 December 11 00:08 GMT (UK)  »
Hello

I've hit another wall.  I have an Elizabeth Sawyer, formerly Kite, mother to Robert Sawyer born in Netheravon in 1848, married to William Sawyer, residence Netheravon.  All this information is from Roberts birth certificate.  However, I cannot find anything else for Elizabeth as I am now trying to research her Kite family.  I can see her on the 1841 census married to William but how do I now go back further to find her parents/siblings?

Thanks in advance
