Yorkshire (North Riding) / William Metcalfe of Askrigg
« on: Tuesday 03 July 07 21:19 BST (UK)  »

Hi

I have a William Mte bpt 18/01/1824 Askrigg, s.o. Ann Mte spinster, Bainbridge.  I also have William c1826 (who married Mary Ann/e Simpson)  s.o.George Caygill Mte bpt 04/01/1781 Askrigg & Isabella nee Blades

What I'm trying to work out is whether Ann kept her son and brought him up, or whether he was adopted by George & Isabella. They had other children whose baptisms are all listed in the parish records, but William's isn't. The only baptism for a William tht comes close, is the one for Ann's son.

Does anyone have any idea how I can go about confirming or disproving my suspicions?

I live in hope :)

« on: Friday 15 September 06 16:00 BST (UK)  »
Hi

I have access to a plotter at work (HP DesignJet 350C) and I want to print my tree.

Does anyone know what paper you should select in the print options?

Thanks

Completed Census Requests / Loading Family Tree onto Ancestry
« on: Monday 24 April 06 21:30 BST (UK)  »

Has anyone loaded their family tree onto the Ancestry website?

And if you did, have you had any luck finding connections?

You can load it up without displaying it, but still see the matches, but I haven't had any luck with it.

The Lighter Side / British Isles Vital Records Index
« on: Sunday 09 April 06 20:41 BST (UK)  »

I have the British Isles Vital Records Index 1st Edition from the FamilySearch.org Site (Latterday Saints)

I see there is a 2nd edition, but I'm reluctant to buy it as I have never found a single relative on the first (Although I have found many on the FREE website).

Does anyone own the 2nd edition, and is it any good?

Thanks

Anita

The Lighter Side / Wouldn't you just love to find these in your tree

I Have this Dictionary of Surnames, which gives you the origins/meaning of them. My favourite section of the book, is a list of names that have gone out of use, for obvious reasons. Here's a sample of the more repeatable ones:

Bucktrout
Cockfyssh
Drinkedregges
Evilchild
Horsepet (which apparently means horsefart)
Litelskill
Lusshefish
Pokepot
Rotenhering
Shepewassh
Strokelady
Underdonne
crakpot
Grindelove
Wetebedde
Blakeballoc (Black testicle - honest, it's real!)
Le Pettour (The Farter)
Singsmal (Sings badly)

And for the Scots out there:

Aydrunken (Always Drunk)
Luggespick (Ear Pick)
Sowlug (Pig ear)

The Common Room / Unanswered posts
« on: Friday 31 March 06 22:44 BST (UK)  »

I've been looking at some unanswered lookup requests to see if I can try and help. Often I find that the names mentioned are not in the particular census they have requested. So my question is, do people do the lookup and when they can't find the name leave the post unanswered?

The Lighter Side / Good Book

I've just finished reading 'The Conjurors Bird' by Martin Davies. Just thought I'd recomment it - it even has a family tree enthusiast in it.

Free to a good home
