Occupation Interests / Gunsmiths - dating a muzzle loading pistol
« on: Friday 20 April 18 08:20 BST (UK)  »
Can any of you eagle-eyed contributors help me with this or point me in the right direction.  A local history group is working in a museum for gunsmiths and cutlers and we have a pistol which we are trying to attribute to a particular gunmaker and we need to know roughly the year it was made.  Don't know much about pistols but we do know it is possibly early 19th century.  It does not seem to have a trigger which seems odd and not sure how the firing mechanism works.  See photo attached - which I am afraid is not very clear.

Heraldry Crests and Coats of Arms / Window Coat of Arms Hampshire Church
« on: Sunday 08 April 18 17:12 BST (UK)  »
Another coat-of-arms in a church in Hampshire found in the window and also on the tomb of the remains of an unidentified person in the Chancel of the church which was the preceptory of a cell of Knights Hospitaller.  The arms are thought to be that of VIP of the Knights who died in the late 15th century, possibly William Tournay, but I can find no sources which indicate that these arms relate to that name.  Has anybody come across it before?  The window and tomb also contain a very stylised "T" which would also support the Tournay theory.

Heraldry Crests and Coats of Arms / Hampshire Church - unidentified Shield
« on: Sunday 08 April 18 16:08 BST (UK)  »
Can anyone help to identify the attached shield.  It was found on the roof of a church in North Baddesley, Hampshire.  The church belonged to a preceptor of the Knights Hospitaller and we believe the roof dates to the late 15th early 16th century.  There are 11 other shields in the roof and they all seem to relate to prominent families/individuals located in Hampshire at that time.

Suffolk Lookup Requests / GISLINGHAM Parish Registers - BARHAM or GRIMWOOD 1715
« on: Thursday 05 February 15 19:23 GMT (UK)  »
I wonder if someone could help me with a look up.  I am stuck on a Catherine Barham who married James Cook in Gislingham in 1735.  One of their children was called GRIMWOOD Cook and so I suspect Catherine's mother was a GRIMWOOD.  She is thought to have been born around 1715 and I have found a Susan Grimwood married to a John Barham in Finningham (a couple of miles up the road from Gislingham) in 1706 and so I think it is likely that these might be the parents of Catherine.  I have also found a Susannah Barham borne to Susan Grimwood and John Barham in Gislingham in 1709 and so I think it is very likely that Catherine will be somewhere in the same register.

Kent Lookup Requests / St Mary-Bredin Canterbury SKINNER & SHENTON
« on: Thursday 19 January 12 20:02 GMT (UK)  »
Could someone kindly give me a transcript of the wedding details of Edward Skinner married Hester or Ester Skinner on 6 10 1677 at this church according to IGI records.  I think she is a Walloon baptised in the Dover French Church in 1652 but I would like to verify?

Many thanks

Hampshire & IOW Lookup Requests / CLEIFE - St. Mary's, Portsea Parish Registers
« on: Monday 09 January 12 13:26 GMT (UK)  »
Hi - can anyone help me with the St Marys Parish Portsea record of marriage on 12/11/1822
between Edward Phillips Cleife and Mary Woodger.  I am drawing a blank on their ancestry as Edward appears to have been born in Kingsbridge Devon and I have not been able to trace his birth nor Mary Woodger's.  Any information on the marriage record might help me.

Ronnie
