Australia / Can someone help me with information about Joseph John Symons please?
« on: Thursday 14 February 19 06:50 GMT (UK)  »
My friend has asked if I could help find information on her family member. We can find information on his family but I’m finding information on Joseph John Symons very thin on the ground.

Joseph John Symons b. 1855 Douta Galla (Essendon) Melbourne

His parents are;
Father: Joseph Samuel Symons b. 10 Oct 1834, Lambeth St Mary, England,  d. 6 Oct 1890.   Gipps Ward Melbourne Hospital, Melbourne, Victoria, Australia (buried Kyneton Victoria)
Mother: Jane Esther Hall b. 22 Mar 1833 Cumberland, England d. 13 May 1905 'Windmill Farm' Edgecombe, Victoria, Australia

I can’t find a death date, a wife, or any children for Joseph John. I do know that he signs his Fathers probate papers in December 1890, in Kyneton I think. And that’s it.

What am I missing? Any assistance would be gratefully received.

Australia / Help me find Jane's daughter
« on: Sunday 19 August 18 07:42 BST (UK)  »
This is a request following on from another thread about Jane Anderson.

Jane Anderson (1823 - 1867) married John Gillespie (1827 - 1894). John was her third husband and when she married him, in 1855, she already had a daughter, Jane Christina Anderson Taylor, born in Scotland 28 July 1847.

John and Jane Anderson had other children, two of whom survived; Peter Gillespie and Jane Isabella Gillespie. I can find plenty of information on these two children (they are my family so it has been easy) but nothing about Jane Christina Anderson Taylor until she marries James Henry Dickinson in Castlemaine in October 1876. From that point her own family is available on Ancestry.

Jane Christina would have been about 20 years old when her mother died.

Jane Christina inherits nothing from the Gillespie side of the family but does inherit from her uncle Caleb Anderson.

My questions are;
What generally happened to children of previous marriages? Did they stay with the mothers new family or were they sent to other family members?

Given the Scottish naming protocol, and the fact that both John and Janes mothers were called Jane, would it be normal for both daughters to be called Jane? The second daughter Jane was known as Isabella but Jane Christina was known as Jane as well as Jeannie and Jenny.

More importantly can anyone point me in another direction to find more information to fill in the gaps?

Regards, Liz

I have recently inherited this portrait and no family member has any idea who she is. I'm hoping someone here can help me with the date, based on her clothes and hairstyle. If I can guess her age and know the date it should help identify her.

It is painted on what appears to be opaque glass and the little tacks that we pulled out of the frame looked like little horseshoe nails. I was hoping there were some details on the back, but nothing was there.

She would have been part of the Gillespie / Hall family from Kingower / Inglewood in Victoria Australia.

I appreciate any assistance.

Liz
