Dorset / Shepherd Family Maiden Newton
« on: Wednesday 25 July 12 12:28 BST (UK)  »
I would appreciate any help with my Sheppard family origins.

William Sheppard married Joan Sheppard in Maiden Newton 19th Jun 1815.

They are living in Maiden Newton in 1841, William age 50 and Joan age 55 with Hannah 30 and Joan 20 Sheppard and grandson James Lake 3.

In 1861 William Shephard age 71 born Maiden Newton was living with his daughter Sarah Diskett's family in Sydling St Nicholas.  At this point William is a widower.

Joan Sheppard died in Maiden Newton 1850, age 67.  I cannot find a baptism of a Joan Sheppard that fits. Can anyone else?

I suspect that widower William Sheppard is in Maiden Newton 1851 living with Robert and Elizabeth Coombs even though he is given as 72 and is the father-in-law. Robert Coombs and Elizabeth Spurrell Sheppard married 8 April 1828 Maiden Newton. In 1861 Elizabeth Coombs is listed as being born in Misterton, Somerset.

I assume William Sheppard died between 1871-1881 but can’t find his death.

Jacob Shepherd and Joan Spardle married in Misterton, Somerset in 21 Jan 1805. On the 3rd Nov 1805 Elizabeth Shi...le Sheppard was baptised in Crewkerne to Jacob and Jane according to FamilySearch.  Hannah Thorpe Shepherd was baptised Misterton, Somerset on 22 May 1808 daughter of Jacob and Jean.

My query regards whether the Joan Shephard that married William Sheppard was the widow of Jacob Sheppard.  I would need to confirm the death of Jacob Sheppard for this to be possible.

Hannah Sheppard living with William and Joan in 1841 would have been born before their marriage. Could she have been the daughter of Joan's first Marriage (ie Hannah Thorpe Sheppard)?

Elizabeth Coombs nee Sheppard would probably not have been the daughter of William and Joan but could she have been the daughter of Joan's first marriage too and William's Stepdaughter?

Can anyone help to progress this theory?

Australia / William Bartlett BURT
« on: Friday 04 May 12 10:01 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to trace the whereabouts of William Bartlett Burt and his wife Maria Teresa Furber. They married in Maiden Newton, Dorset, England in 1842 after which I can find no trace of them.

The IHR NSW has an online land record index listing a William Bartlett Burt with one entry with a Title deed in 1853.  I suspect this could be the person I am looking for.   An old internet post suggests that they went to Sydney and that Maria was a school teacher.  If this was the case it would explain why I have been unable to trace them in the UK.

Any help to confirm this family would be much appreciated.

Donegal / Bradley
« on: Friday 23 March 12 11:57 GMT (UK)  »
I have little information to go on but am looking for connections to a Bradley family living near Convoy, Donegal.
The family were Flax farmers. The only name we have is Peter Bradley from the 1940s.  He had a daughter who worked in the local Post Office, married and then moved to the Birmingham area.

Peter Bradley was a cousin of Margaret Bradley born c1863 in Co. Donegal.

Not much to go on but if anything sounds familiar then this would be most helpful.

World War One / Where were the A/301st Bde, RFA posted?
« on: Tuesday 17 January 12 12:20 GMT (UK)  »
I would like to discover where the 301st brigade of the RFA served during WW1, if possible.

I had an unexpected stroke of luck in discovering my grandfathers WW1 Brigade this morning in the Absent Voters List.  My grandfather was a Driver whose war record appears one of the many lost.  His medal card does not mention the theatre of war but we understood he was in the Egypt/Israel area and travelled back through France.  Does this fit in with where the 301st might have been posted?

Anyone able to help would be much appreciated.

Dorset / Mellier Adams Biggins/Buckland Newton
« on: Thursday 17 November 11 12:53 GMT (UK)  »
Mellier Adams Biggins was baptised in Buckland Newton 13 May 1751, the Spurious Daughter of Ann Adams of Pointington. She married Benjamin Durrant in Buckland Newton 7 Nov 1773 as Meliora Adams.  It is not suprising that her name was written in various ways eg Millyar, Mellyar, Mellyer and Milliar.

I can not find any other references to Ann Adams, mother of Mellier. Birth, Marriage, Death or any other children. I wonder if any rootshat members might have had any success.

« on: Monday 07 March 11 11:58 GMT (UK)  »
I am having trouble finding the christening details for the Mary Baragwanath who married William Hitchens on 20 Aug 1787 in Kea.  I can't find any christenings for a Mary Baragwanath which might fit the right time.

Any help would be appreciated even help with alternative spellings of the Baragwanath name.

Glamorganshire Lookup Requests / Marriage transcription check please
« on: Friday 12 November 10 21:22 GMT (UK)  »
I wonder if anyone going to the Glamorgan Record Office might be able to check the parish register of Merthyr Tydfil for me.

I am looking at the marriage of John Lewis and Catherine Bebb - 16 Jul 1827. Could Catherine's name have been Babb not Bebb?  The IGI has Bebb but if her name was actually Babb then I can place her which would be great.  Any witnesses to the marriage would also be helpful.

Dorset / Harvey family of Hamworthy
« on: Friday 01 May 09 11:25 BST (UK)  »
Hoping someone can help with this query.

I found a marriage in 1784 in Lytchett Minster of a Thomas Harvey and Susanna House both of Hamworthy.  I am interested in whether this couple had any children as I am looking for a baptism of a Frances or Fanny Harvey c1791.  The family had connections with both Lytchett and Poole at this time.  So any leads on Harvey families in this area would be very helpful.
