Lancashire / John SCOTT - Isabella FURNESS marriage 1831
« on: Monday 23 July 18 10:16 BST (UK)  »
Hi there.  John SCOTT (mariner, otp) married Isabella FURNESS (otp) 25 Sept 1831 at St Peter's Liverpool by licence. Witnesses were Mary Ann FURNESS and Thomas FURNESS. (from Lancs Online Parish Clerks).  For some reason, their intention to marry was registered in Cheshire and that stated they were both born in 1806.  The couple may well have had a son Benjamin, possibly before they were married (his age at death puts his birth at 1829).  They emigrated to Tasmania, Australia about 1834.

Can anyone please find any information on John, Isabella, Benjamin, Thomas or Mary Ann?

Regards

Doug

Australia / SCOTT in George Town, Launceston, Tasmania 1800-1861
« on: Friday 20 July 18 06:04 BST (UK)  »
Hi there

I'm interested in any information on John SCOTT, b. 1806 (place?), married Anne JEFFRIES at George Town in 1851, had four children (Walter, Frances, Alfred & Frederick, whose birth dates I have), and died 1861 at Launceston.

John began as a pilot on the R Tamar about 1828 and became Senior Pilot about 1856 until his death in 1861.  I suspect Benjamin SCOTT (m. c1857, d. 1869), who was also a pilot on the R Tamar, was his brother, as he was an executor in John's will.

Can anyone find John's birth or entry into Australia?  Or anything of relevance, please?

Hampshire & IOW Lookup Requests / COLES of Pennington
« on: Saturday 01 April 17 10:41 BST (UK)  »
Hi there

I am working on the assumption that John and Sarah COLES had at least three children baptised in Pennington: Stargos 07/10/1784, Carmi 15/04/1785 and Comfort 24/02/1788.

We have knowledge of Carmi's marriages and children but nothing of his (assumed) parents or siblings. With such distinct names, something must pop up!

Can anyone help, please?

Hi there

I have a list of BAILEY marriages from the Devon FHS.  I am interested in the following marriages because the list says that the marriage records include notes:

James BAILEY = Ann DAVEY, 03/03/1805 Exeter St David
William BAILEY = Elizabeth COTERALL, 09/02/1769 Exeter St Lawrence
William BAILEY = Elizabeth VENN, 11/06/1769 Exeter Holy Trinity
John BAILEY = Mary PURRINGTON, 06/03/1799 Tiverton
John BAILEY = Mary WHITE, 21/12/1773 Tiverton

I'm particularly interested in any of the above who might be hairdressers or perfumers, or who are connected to Taunton.

If anyone has details of the following (especially witnesses) I would be very thankful:

William BAILEY = Mary LEONARD, 04/07/1769 Woodbury

Dorset Lookup Requests / James BAILEY = Isabella LAMBERT, Melcombe Regis, 1800
« on: Wednesday 28 August 13 12:32 BST (UK)  »
Hi there

Some years ago the Somerset and Dorset FHS provided me with the following marriage details:

James BAILEY = Isabella LAMBERT, 22 September 1800, at Melcombe Regis, St Mary.  Wits:- Anne GRANT, Elizabeth GRANT.

I am trying to prove or disprove that they are James and Isabel BAILEY, perfumers, who lived in Taunton from 1800 - c1824.  Two questions, please:

1.  Can anyone provide further details about the couple from marriage records (occupation, parish)?

2.  Are there any further records of the couple in Dorset after the marriage (birth of children, census, etc)?

I thought I would try here ahead of ordering the marriage record.  Many thanks in advance.

Dumfriesshire / William LITTLE b. Ewes 1731
« on: Monday 03 December 12 11:22 GMT (UK)  »
Hi there

I have William LITTLE baptised 1731 at Ewes, oldest child of Simon LITTLE in Terrona and Margaret LITTLE.  They had three other children: Mary, bpt 1732, Janet bpt 1734 and James bpt 1741.

This line of Littles descend from the Lairds of Meikledale and all but four are buried at Ewes.  The book, The Ewes Valley, kindly provides MIs which show the relationships between the family.  Just four are missing: William, Mary and Janet, and a cousin who went to the south of England.

A quick search for William LITTLE deaths at Ewes failed to show anything 1731 - 1741.  That's not surprising as he is not on his family's headstones.  Can someone please look a bit further for a William LITTLE death in Ewes or surrounding parishes?  Alternatively, any likely marriages?  As William's brother, James, became 'in Teronna' it seems likely William died or moved out of the area.

In another family tree I have a William LITTLE, b. 1731 (where?) who married and settled at Mealrigg in NW Cumberland.  He was one of the first LITTLEs (or Scottish names) recorded in the Bromfield parish records.  I'm trying to prove or disprove any connection between Mealrigg and Ewes.

Thanks,

Doug

Somerset / BAILEY: electoral registers 1832-1914
« on: Thursday 26 May 11 11:31 BST (UK)  »
Can someone with access to the Somerset electoral register please have a look for any James, William or Sarah BAILEY (or variants) from 1832-1865?  I think they moved between Taunton and Langport.

Ireland / Bailey perfumer pre-1780
« on: Friday 25 February 11 10:26 GMT (UK)  »
This is a long shot.  James and Isabel BAILEY were perfumers and hairdressers in Taunton, Somerset.  Their son, William, was born there in 1784 but I have found no record of his birth / baptism and no record of James and Isabel's marriage.  Their grandson was James Alexander Bailey, but I have no idea where the 'Alexander' comes from.

There is just a hint of a possible Irish connection.  My question is, does anyone have any records of BAILEYs (or variants Bayley, Bailie, Baillie) who were perfumers / hairdressers in the 18th century? How about ALEXANDERs?

England / Census lookups - Thomas WILKS b.1862
« on: Saturday 16 January 10 05:10 GMT (UK)  »
Hi there

Can someone please do a census lookup (any) for Thomas WILKS b. 1862 at Balham, Surrey?

In the 1901 census Thomas was in Southampton and his wife was listed as Janie / Jane b. 1866 at Clerkenwell, London.  I believe they were married at Westham, Essex in 1885.  Thomas' occupation was recorded as Director of Companies so that is not much help.

Incidentally, Thomas was the father of Maurice and Spencer Wilks, the designers of the Land Rover.

Doug
