Armed Forces / Sergent RM Artllery 1861

Hi RootsChat

I am trying to find out about my GGG grandfather David Ross born about 1825 Scotland.
On the 1861 Census he was living with his wife Harriet. His sister Lilias Ross was also living with them. They lived in Portsmouth

David was a sergent in the RM Artillery, is this Royal Marine Artillery? What did they do and any ideas on where might he have been posted. What duties would a sergent have had?

I have tried looking on the National Archive but have been unable to trace David.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Thanks
Karen
