Australia / Augustus Page
« on: Thursday 07 March 13 06:46 GMT (UK) »
Hi,
I am hoping there are other people out there who may be able to help or know something about my 2nd Great-Grandfather Augustus Page.
Augustus was born in approx 1866. He arrived in Australia aboard the 'Austral' in 1885 at the age of 19.
On the 7th May 1890 he married Emily Tampe in Carlton, Victoria.
Augustus and Emily had 5 children that were all born in Malvern, Victoria before the family relocated to Sydney.
Elizabeth Ellen Page (1891-1977)
Henry Edward Page (1893 - 1893)
Hermann Page (1894 - 1894)
Emily Laura Page (1895 - 1971)
Francis August Page (1900 - 1947)
He worked as a carpenter and built the staircase at Iandra castle outside Greenthrope in New South Wales and it appears as though he may have spent some time in Western Australia (we have articles from Trove).
According to my Great-Aunt he left the martial home in Marrickville, NSW around 1915 but she does not know anything more about him.
Augustus died on the 3rd August 1926 in Sydney and is buried in Rookwood Cemetery.
I have copies of her marriage certificate and death certificate which ends up throwing more questions than answers for us.
His marriage certificate states that he was born in Germany but the actual place is unclear. It looks like Colmar, Germany however his death certificate states he was born in Cologne Germany.
The reasons for the questions are down to the family story.
Apparently Augustus use to say he didn't know if he was French or German because he was born in the Alsace-Lorraine region. In addition, his last name was actually LePage but it was changed somewhere along the way (this appears to have happened when he was still in Germany as all the records in Australia give his last name as Page)
If this is true, than Colmar could be his birth place because at the time of his birth it was part of Germany. (or we could be completely off track and the family story is wrong - which wouldn't surprise me)
However, having Cologne on his death certificate is understandable as the family spent some time there where Augustus use to sing in one of the Cathedrals.
We also have his parent's anglised names: Harry Page and Kate Alles.
If anyone knew about Augustus or can give some hints on how we can find out some more information about one of the more elusive members of the family it would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Em.
