Ireland / Sponsors on Baptism
« on: Wednesday 26 October 22 16:43 BST (UK)  »
Would it be a fair assumption to say that most "sponsors" in 1800's to early 1900 would have been related to family = possibly brothers or sisters of the parents?

Mayo / Thomas loftus & Mary Egan Bonniconlon
« on: Thursday 31 December 20 16:28 GMT (UK)  »
Can anyone help with more info on a Thomas Loftus and Mary Egan possibly married 31march 1870 although this hasn’t been confirmed. They had 10 children Mary / Maria being the first 15 April 1871 and Michael being the last in 1890.

Mary Egan died sometime after Michael was born but before 1901 as her husband Thomas is listed as a widower in 1901 census.

So I’m really looking for their marrriage or birth certificates to try and work back a generation.

Dublin / Thomas Loftus and Bridget Kearney
« on: Tuesday 12 May 20 10:08 BST (UK)  »
Looking for clarity around records found and where to go next . . . . .

Thomas Loftus (Church of Ireland) occupation Printer born approx. 1841 (no record) married Bridget Kearney (catholic) on 16th March 1868 in St. Mary's COI. Thomas died in 1871.

The confusion is around birth records I have found for their children  . . . . .

Amelia Alice Born 21 Aug 1864, Baptised COI on 18 Sept 1867 - was it normal to wait so long to have a child baptised - would it have been normal to wait so long to marry after having a child out of wedlock?
Then i found another record for Emily Loftus - same parents but records birth on 21 Aug 1867 (same date as above just different year) and the baptised 7 June 1871 in St Mary's Pro-Cathedral.

Bridgets mother was Amelia Farrell but is sometimes referred to in records as Emily - so do i assume that Amelia is Emily and was re-christened after fathers death - but error in records??

Also I have a son John George Born 5 May 1869 baptised 18 June 1869 again COI but then again i have another record for a Thomas Joseph Born 16 Aug 1871 baptised 21 Aug 1871 in St Mary's Pro Cathedral - do i assume these two are again the same person??

I there anyway to find a birth cert for Father Thomas - I found his wife Bridgets

England / Edward Loftus
« on: Tuesday 05 March 19 16:40 GMT (UK)  »
I have an edward loftus in my tree born 2 Jan 1892 in Dublin. Married a Teresa Farrell  19 april 1915 in Keady C. Armagh.

He joined Royal Irlsh Fus. in 1915 and was sent to gallapoli 7 Aug 1915.

he was discharged 21 March 1919 and his first child was born in Keady 30 Oct 1920.

I think he moved to England after this as i can find no further trace of him in Ireland. He worked as a Tailor before the war and went to England to become a bespoke tailor. he has three more children that i know of Edward, Mary and another girl. James died in Manchester and Edward died in Liverpool so i don't know if either of these areas are related. Edward and his family are all buried in Keady.

World War One / Pte Edward Loftus
« on: Tuesday 05 March 19 14:38 GMT (UK)  »
I need some help uncovering records of an Edward Loftus born in Dublin 2nd Jan 1892.
1911 census has him living in Keady, Co. Armagh working as a Tailor.
he married a Teresa Farrell 19 April 1915 still living in Keady - his occupation at this date was a Solider - address is given as Portobello Barracks - which is in Dublin even though he married in Keady.

He was a private in the Royal Irish Fustr. Service No. 11528 discharge date 12th March 1919.

How can i find out when he joined, where he was based during war and why he was discharged?

Thanks
