The Lighter Side / Dying of old age?
« on: Thursday 24 October 13 13:37 BST (UK)  »
Is that possible I ask myself, as somebody else did in the comments section of this article.

http://www.theguardian.com/news/datablog/interactive/2013/oct/24/how-people-died-21st-century?commentpage=1

How can you die of old age? That's a bit like saying "died from getting lost" surely. At the end of the day (pun intended) you have to die of something specific and 'old age' is not one of them I would suggest.

I had a sister who died of a broken heart, several times.  ;D

The Lighter Side / Digging too deep?
« on: Wednesday 23 October 13 15:19 BST (UK)  »
Is it possible to dig to deep into the recent past?

I have found three pieces of a family jigsaw that seem to fit together to make a rather unsavory picture, even by today's standards.

Should I put them to one side, or should I try and fit them together given that those involved although long gone are still in living memory? Much if not all of what I find during my research once compiled is for my eyes only and that of my children once I am gone.... but still.

The Lighter Side / Italians in Wales
« on: Monday 21 October 13 17:55 BST (UK)  »
Done a quick Roots search on behalf of my Mrs but perhaps others can help.

Is there a discussion in Roots anywhere on Italian immigration and/or perhaps Italian immigration into Wales?

The odd thing is my own research started with a virtual blank sheet and a discovery backwards whereas the Mrs has had so much passed down I really am quite envious truth be a told, and more than a little miffed she is not making more of a record of it all for our kids - although I may have got her interested of late because of my own family backtracks.

Some of the stuff she has in her head is amazing, really amazing.

The Common Room / What if?
« on: Monday 07 October 13 12:36 BST (UK)  »
Trying to get hold of my late fathers death certificate from the GRO (which I had to order by phone) but what if, given that he had a very common name, there is more than one person with the same date of birth? I can only guess at when and where he died but as said, what happens when there is more than one eh? £9.25 for what might be the wrong person!

The guys partner died well before his own demise, he was estranged from the entire family, so there will be no clue to be found from the name of the informant.

Fingers crossed I suppose but I'll tell you what, there might be a lot of coffee in Brazil but by 'eck lad, there are a lot of Thompson's in Yorkshire!

World War Two / Joint Service records
« on: Monday 07 October 13 10:00 BST (UK)  »
From research, it now seems as if my deceased and long estranged father was in both the Navy and the Army during WW2, so I'm now wondering given that the services are now combined, whether or not all records are released for a single fee.

I have my fathers regiment and army number but nothing about his alleged Navy service from where according to his submission, he was discharged because of TB and had applied to join the Army.

A bit fishy, or possibly true?

Although expensive at around £30 I believe, paying this amount twice, one for each set of records is going to rather painful!

Any ideas welcome guys.

The Common Room / GRO problems?
« on: Saturday 05 October 13 13:20 BST (UK)  »
Anyone else having problems with the GRO at the moment?

It's telling me I am entering the wrong password (which is unlikely) but when I ask for a reminder of my 'forgotten' password nothing is being sent and/or received. They say it takes an hour to come through, but it's been three requests over three days!

The Lighter Side / Distant voices.....

........Still Lives

Did anybody catch this on BBC2 the other night? It was about memories of England in the 1940s and 50s. It certainly brought some memories back to me, and it was well done I thought.

The Lighter Side / The hundred year rule
« on: Tuesday 24 September 13 08:51 BST (UK)  »
Most of us are aware I guess that the next batch of census returns for 1921 will not be available for a little while yet under the 100 year rule, but does this apply to other records held by various authorities I wonder.

I have learned from here that now my long estranged father is deceased, I can obtain his army records - albeit on production of his death certificate which is now being ordered, and on payment of £30 I think to the Army records office, but what about criminal records? A delicate question perhaps, but one that I need to ask as it would open and then close a few doors for me.

I have Googled this but it does not seem that clear, well not to this old duffer anyway!

The Lighter Side / A bridge to far?
« on: Sunday 15 September 13 16:43 BST (UK)  »
Having made contact with a cousin from help given on this site, it got me thinking about how easy it has been to lose contact with them over the years, and how would it be possible to re-connect them all.

My own mother was one of seven sibling and my father was one of four - so you can imagine how many cousins there are and how far and wide they must have spread. Is it a bridge to far to try and bring them together again using modern technology..... or is there really no point in such an undertaking and moreover, having a mind to privacy is it irresponsible to even try?

I did I web search for sites that might already be doing this with words such as 'connecting cousins' but most if not all that came back were personal blogs - so a little project for one of us perhaps.

Views and opinions appreciated as always  :)
