This is my 3rd attempt - hopefully 3rd time lucky!

Sorry I just sent this but the photograph did not seem to
attach so here is my message and (hopefully) photo, again..

Greetings,

I would love to have a date for the attached photograph as there
is disagreement between various family members as to whether
it is our great grandmother Charlotte who was born in 1866, or her
daughter Mary born in 1887.

There are no markings as the photo was sent to me as a photocopy and
this is all I have.

Any help would be most gratefully received.
Thanking you,
Diana in Tropical Far North Queensland Australia

Devon Lookup Requests / Stoke Damerel and/or East Stonehouse lookup please
« on: Friday 02 May 08 21:39 BST (UK)  »
Greetings!  In answer to a couple of very generous offers to do lookups
I am desperate to find out the origins of my ancestor
ANN COLLOM/ COLLUM and variants (Colam, Colum, Collumb, Collumbe etc.)
who married RICHARD PAIN in Stoke Damerel in 1804 (IGI parish record extract)

Richard Pain went to Devonport to work as a Shipwright in the Naval Dockyards
after he finished his apprenticeship in Fowey, Cornwall in 1802.  He and Ann had
9 known children, but only three daughters survived to adulthood

Richard was born in 1780 so I am assuming that his wife Ann Collom would have
been born around the same time or a bit later.  Does anyone have any Parish Records
they could search for her baptism, even if only to count an area or parish out?

There is a possibility Ann was born in Mevagissey in 1783, but as, in later census records
some of the Pain children survivors were found living with, or visiting, Collom families, I
need to find out if they were a long standing Devonport/East Stonehouse family.

Thanking you in anticipation for any help you can give me.

Cornwall / RIichard PAIN of Fowey
« on: Monday 13 June 05 02:22 BST (UK)  »
RICHARD PAIN was born in FOWEY in 1780, to parents JOHN PAIN and ELIZABETH PENNEY.

He possibly had brothers named WILLIAM, RICHARD, SAMUEL and JOHN, and one sister by the name of LUCY.

At age 14 he was apprenticed as a Shipwright, and following his 7 year apprenticeship he moved to Devonport where he remained for the rest of his life.  I have a copy of his apprenticeship papers which make very interesting reading.

Richard married ANN COLLOM, whom I believe came from MEVAGISSEY, although this is unproven at this point in time.

The couple had 8 children but most of these died in infancy.
The only survivors were:

ELIZABETH PAIN, born in 1807
MATILDA PAIN born in 1813 (my ancestor)
and possibly ANN PAIN born 1818

Their only two sons were named JOSEPH RICHARD PAIN & RICHARD JOSEPH, but both died in infancy.

If anyone knows anything else about this family I would love to hear from them.  Diana

Staffordshire / PICKFORD of STOKE UPON TRENT
« on: Monday 13 June 05 00:45 BST (UK)  »
Greetings!
BENJAMIN PICKFORD was born in MACCLESFIELD in 1830 and moved to MANCHESTER sometime between then and 1849 when he married ELLEN WOLSTENCROFT. on 25th April.  In December of the same year they had a baby daughter named
RACHEL PICKFORD, born Salford.

At some stage during the next 10 years the marriage broke up (family folklore has it that Ellen ran off to Australia with another man), and Benjamin moved to Hanley in Staffordshire where he continued with his trade of Baker.

In 1861 he is found living in Hanley, just around the corner from ELIZABETH PARKER, whom he bigamously married in 1862, under the false name of JOHN BENJAMIN PICKFORD and the couple then moved to Stoke upon Trent where they went on to have 13 children, who were:

MARY ANN PICKFORD, born Stoke on Trent 1864
     married JOSEPH ADAMS, 1889
