Looking for some help on this one please if anyone can shed light
Francis was from the Shettleston area of Glasgow. There was a story that he was killed in the troop train crash at Quintinshill near Gretna Green on 22 May 1915 but the memorial for this sad disaster does not share his name as a casualty. He has lost his life during WW1 given the family was given the death Penny as a memorial and recognition of his services in War .. I cannot see any detail of this Francis McKenna and wondered if anyone could offer a clue to his fate ?

Have looked at Scotlands People but dont see any alignment to any Francis McKenna in any listing of service deaths ..

Thanking in advance for any help

Lanarkshire / John Robertson S/244642 Understand a Gorbals boy
« on: Monday 14 November 22 02:59 GMT (UK)  »
Born Glasgow
Royal Army Service Corps
Japanese POW
Died Age: 24
Date of Death: 12th Sept 1944

Place of Death: Kachidoki Maru - Sunk North East of Hainan Island off China

A letter that my Grandfather kept till he died and passed on to my father.. meant a lot to him.. Pvte John Robertson.. Transcribed - In memory of a dear friend of David Ross Morland.. John Robertson last letter to his pal, my father. Pte J Robertson, 8/244642 55th Infantry Brigade Group Coy. RASC D Platoon c/o APO 1635.
Dear David, Well old pal this is one New Year we won't be able to have our usual fun at the corner but I don't suppose I will be the only one missing. I will be a long time before we have more drunken rabbles at Tonies on a Saturday night. For I expect to be gone for a couple of years.. "The letter damaged goes on to say" . Tell Johnny in the shop I will try to stay sober ..................... Hoping you are all well at home, tell your mother, father, and sister I was asking for them and Tom and his new wife I wish them the best of luck. Well David I wish you and your people and the lad a Merry Xmas and a Happy New Year and hope to be back with you all soon I will write again soon and hoping to hear from you soon. tell them the best of luck to you all. Your Old Pal John... RIP John to you and all your comrades who perished..
Additional Text, John was drowned whilst captive on the Kibitsu Maru, Sunk by the American Submarine The Pampanito. 900 all British prisoners. Over 500 were drowned. Convoy HI72 to the best of my knowledge sailed from Singapore on the 4th Sept 1944 and the Kibitsu was sunk on the 12th in the North China Sea. John Robertson's name lives on at the Kranji War and Military Cemetery Singapore.

My father looked after the letter that the transcription above supports.. I now have that letter ..
I suspect that John Robertson was the son of James Robertson & Georgina nee Burns (Married Oct 31st 1919) - May be wrong

If there is a family descendant would love to share a little piece of John with them.. My grandfather David Ross Morland carried this letter till his end and never forgot his good friend John Robertson ...

Any help welcome.. I actually have posted this in the military topic page.. I share in this topic page given John was a Glasgow boy and frequented in the Gorbals area / Florence street .. a fair clue

A letter that my Grandfather "David Ross Morland" kept till he died and passed on to my father..meant a lot to him "David Eaglesham Morland" .. Meant a lot to my father..  I have the letter now..
The transcription was actually from my father and some detail he shared to the best of his knowledge .. Hes since passed on  (There may be some errors but possible clues) I wish  to understand the facts better of the gentleman's fate and actually if he belonged to a family. This subject relates to the area of Glasgow / Gorbals / Southside "Florence Street"
If there is a family out there that John links to I would want to share this letter ..

Have attached the original letter in two parts
I really thank anyone who can support on this subject to advance the detail and help understand the facts better .. If there is a basic family history that supports this gentleman

Europe / Bertie Sohil Born estimate abt 1870 From Russia
« on: Saturday 22 August 20 21:48 BST (UK)  »
Guys this one is a needle in a haystack but Ill throw it out to the team and see if there are any clues

I am looking for a gentleman as best info as I have...
Bertie SOHIL - Now there may be variant's to this

What I do know is the following - Shared Transcript from a Family member

"Bertie Seal (Sohil) who we know to have been resident in Merthyr Tydfil (South Wales, UK), living in the same house as Paul Seal (Sohil) in the first decade or so of the 20th century. There is a presumption that they were brothers, Bertie the elder of the two by 6 or 7 years. We also know that Bertie left the UK and returned to where he had come from (Poland/Lithuania/Russia, etc.), with a further presumption that he never came back to re-join his brother in the UK. This much I have always known through the oral history of our family Seal (though I didn't know his name was Bertie).
I have for many decades wondered what became of Bertie, knowing that 2/3rds of Europe's Jews perished in the Shoah.  Do we have any knowledge of what became of Bertie Sohil? Many thanks in anticipation of your replies"

I can find Paul Seal in the 1901 Census 12 Victoria Street,
Glamorgan, Merthyr Tydfil, Lower Merthyr Tydfil, District 18
He is single in this residence so presume if Bertie is around its after this period

I cant see him in 1911 Census for England or Wales

attached is the Naturalisation document for Paul SOHIL (name taken on as SEAL) - Naturalised in 1916
This confirms Pauls roots so presume that Bertie if the brother is from the same area.

Paul Sohil (SEAL) From Kelma, Kowno, Russia born 18th August 1876
So estimate that Bertie born around the 1870 mark

Guys.. If anyone can shed a clue or offer a direction on this one I would be sincerely grateful

Thanks

Hi team, I am dealing with a good mystery here .. can anyone offer any help ..

Jorge original identity is questionable ... the understanding from family is that Jorge took the subject name in respect for his godfather who never married and had no children .. we don’t fully understand the godfathers name .. what was Jorge original birth name is also not fully clear ...

We do know he was in the Rhodesian first fleet and was a pilot... abt 1952 to unknown year
The unknown years we understand that he became a private pilot in Beira Mozambique up to 1964 ... he suffered a terrible injury leaving him paralysed... after which he was moved to Portugal to receive treatment in Hospital for what we believe hospital for veterans ...
he died in Carcagvelos, Lisbon, Portugal
anybody that can help here I would be so grateful ..

Thank you

Europe / Clara Rafaela Morland B2 Oct 1830, Havana, Cuba D14 Aug 1874 in Rome, Italy
« on: Tuesday 15 October 19 05:00 BST (UK)  »
Clara Rafaela Morland was born on 2 October 1830 in La Habana, Cuba, her father, John Morland American Consulate based in Cuba and her mother, Ruth Cushing. She had four sisters. She died on 14 August 1874 in Roma, Roma, Italy, at the age of 43, and was buried there.

Laid to rest in the Cimitero Acattolico di Roma, Italy ...

Further = General info - Clara's grandfather was a William Morland (John Morlands father) who was our American Morland pioneer from Stranraer, Scotland .... William was the son of John McMorland B abt 1702 who was a Calvary officer under Lord Stair and fought in the War of Succession

I was very humbled and had the enormous pleasure to pay my respects to Clara on a visit to the cemetery in Rome.

Really guys I don't have any clues as to why Clara was in Rome and how she died .. I wonder if there are any Italian researchers out there that may offer some more clues as to Clara`s adventure in Rome?

Grateful if anyone can shed further light.. Ancestry is limited in this case..

I did get many images of the cemetery that Clara rests in and it is wonderfully kept ..

Thanks for any help team..

The Common Room / England and Wales GRO guidance
« on: Friday 04 October 19 15:54 BST (UK)  »
I struggle a bit with the England GRO site and feel its limited .. I do have a question that maybe somebody can help on ?
I am used largely to snapping up certs from Scotland on the Scotland’s People’s web site but when I go home I have went through to Edinburgh house and spent hrs on the back of booking a research station freely looking through BDM and other subjects...
is it possible that for England and Wales BDM is there is such an opportunity to do similar ? Would this have to be done in England ? If so what facilities are there to take advantage of and any advice on this I welcome .. I have a few loose ends in England and really with the limitation on info would have me spending small fortunes to find the loose ends that I have .. being able to freely view BDM would make life so much easier ..
I don’t suppose you could have thus freedom from another part of the world ?
hope for some advice
Thank you
