Other Countries / Mauritius, death and burial records
« on: Saturday 24 September 16 13:47 BST (UK)  »
Has anyone had any experience of obtaining death and burial records from Mauritius.  Do they still exist? If they do, how best can they be searched without going to Mauritius?

World War One / Grandfather in India during World War One
« on: Friday 23 May 14 22:31 BST (UK)  »
My grandfather worked for the Asiatic Steam Navigation Company based in Calcutta from about 1904 until at least 1913.  He did not return to Britain until the end of World War One, though his family returned in 1914.  So far I have been unable to find out what he was doing during the war years and what role the A.S.N.Company played in the Great War.  Has anyone any bright ideas where I can find this information. Any help much appreciated.

World War One / Role of Indian merchant navy in WW1
« on: Sunday 08 December 13 16:50 GMT (UK)  »
My grandfather Joseph Olsen, worked as a captain for the Asiatic Steam Navigation Company, based in Calcutta before WW1.  I know that by 1919 he was living back in Britain. I am curious to know what he was doing during the war years.  Is it likely he remained in India (his wife and children came back to England in 1914 I think)? Can anyone point me in the right direction as to where I might be able to find more information about him during the war years.
Any ideas much appreciated

Offaly (Kings) / OGormans of Parsonstown
« on: Friday 23 August 13 17:38 BST (UK)  »
Does anyone know if Catholic parish records exist for Parsonstown and what the chances are of discovering more about the OGorman family?  I believe a Robert and Eliza OGorman lived in the area of Parsonstown around the 1840s / 50s time.  Family stories say Robert was a butcher and kept cattle.  Robert may have died about 1866 / 67 - there are two deaths recorded each for a Robert Gorman. They had about 10 children, several of whom ended up living in Liverpool. Some I believe married in Parsonstown and then moved away.  I am particularly interested in finding Eliza's maiden name and some dates for when the various children were born.
Any clues as to where I start with this will be gratefully accepted.

Offaly (Kings) / Are you researching O Gormans of Birr?
« on: Saturday 23 March 13 12:02 GMT (UK)  »
My great grandmother Catherine ( Kate) O Gorman was born in Offaly (possibly Birr) abt 1851.  She and many of her brothers and sisters emigrated to England and settled in the Liverpool area.  I am interested to know more about her Irish roots.  I believe her father's name may have been Robert, he was a butcher and reared beef, exporting some to Liverpool.  Does this ring any bells with anyone?  Any help much appreciated.

Family History Beginners Board / Anyone researching Gibson or Bennington?
« on: Saturday 23 March 13 11:34 GMT (UK)  »
Do you know if members of either of these families were Quakers in the early 19th century?  I am trying to establish the surname of an Eliza who married Robert Jefferys, probably in 1820s. Robert came from a strong Quaker background, so I wonder if it was a Quaker wedding.  On the census Eliza gives her place of birth as Yorks.  Robert and Eliza had twin sons Alfred Bennington Jefferys and Alexander Gibson Jefferys.  Hence my wondering if either of those middle names were Eliza's maiden name. Any help much appreciated.

Aberdeenshire / Parents of John Stafford
« on: Saturday 05 May 12 14:29 BST (UK)  »
I am interested to find John Staffords father's name.  I know his mother was Jane but do not know her maiden name.  On the 1851 England Census, she is described as widowed.  She was born in Aberdeenshire as was her other son Robert.  John Stafford was probably born abt 1837.  Any suggestions as to how I can find out more about this branch of the Staffords? Many thanks

Armed Forces / Regimental Births in Mauritius - Bennyworth
« on: Saturday 07 April 12 09:42 BST (UK)  »
Does anyone know if it is possible to obtain birth certificates for Regimental births?  I have found my ancestor, a Rose Bennyworth was born in Mauritius in 1848.  She is listed under Rb A-B pdf p196, ref 923 1.  Ideally I would like to obtain a copy of her birth certificate, if such a thing exists,  to establish if Bennyworth was her father or mother's name.  Any advice much appreciated.  :)

Channel Islands Lookup Requests / Did Mary Ann Jacobs die in Jersey?
« on: Sunday 18 March 12 19:35 GMT (UK)  »
I know that Mary Ann Jacobs was born in Jersey around 1816, her father was Jonathan and her mother Ann.  In 1841 she was living in her mother's household in St Helier. In 1851, 61 and 71 she is found living in England in Bath.  ( In 1871 she is referred to as Mary Ann Jefferies)  After that I can't trace what happened to her.  I have no evidence for her death or name change due to marriage in England and wondered if she went back to her place of birth, Jersey.  I would be grateful if anyone can look up death records for Mary Ann Jacobs or Jefferies/ Jefferys after 1871.
Any information regarding her baptism would also be appreciated.  One of her children was brought up Roman Catholic and I wonder if Mary Ann was an RC.  Any help much appreciated.  Thank you
