Antrim / McIlvenna / Crozier
« on: Saturday 03 October 15 15:20 BST (UK)  »
From Rose anna McIlvenna 1907 Scottish death certificate, I have learned parents are Hugh McIlvenna and Rose Crozier.  From Irish marriage record 1855 (Belfast) confirmation of Hugh McIlvenna as father with occupation, weaver.
No birth date for Rose Anna McIlvenna but sources suggest about 1837, possible Armagh.
Any information on Rose McIlvenna or her parents would be appreciated.  Addresses, birth ceritificate etc.

Europe / Portugal, Lisbon - Marie Riccarrina
« on: Sunday 26 July 15 18:46 BST (UK)  »
Hi

Looking for guidance and/or support to trace Portugese ancestor.  Marie Riccarrina, born around 1790.  It is 1861 Scotland census that suggsts she born in Sielegart, Lisbon Portugal.  By 1816 she is in London marrying an Italian soldier, before 'marrying' my 5th great grandfather William Bradley.  William and Marie (a) went to Ireland before moving to Scotland.  Be interested to hear any clues about how she might have got to UK from Portugal.  And of course be great to find her birth/baptismal record.

Cheers

Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / Kennedy Family Postcard
« on: Wednesday 23 October 13 19:03 BST (UK)  »
Hi, I do hope someone can help.  A long lost cousin has been found and wonder of wonders has photographs of my great grandparents.  I have attached back a photo postcard sent from Flora to Hugh.  As you will see the letter on the back of the postcard is difficult to read - help with the missing text would be great.  My attempted transcription is below.  The other two images are front of postcard - Flora and children, and a picture of Hugh.  Any help would be appreciated.
My grandfather is the baby in the pictures. He was born October 1913, so I think this picture is into 1914.  Hugh was KOSB and in reserves before being recalled to his regiment to head off into battle.
p.s. the little girl Sarah Ann, sadly passed away in 1916 of TB - if anyone has the skill to take her portrait and improve so it can be used for her profile pic that would be awesome!
Cheers

Derry (Londonderry) / William Bradley - Dungiven
« on: Sunday 18 August 13 10:09 BST (UK)  »
Hi, looking for information about William Bradley, born around 1776, Dungiven.  He enlisted in 64th foot February 1800 until 1817 - spending over 12 years in West Indies.  I believe he came back to NI and married Mary (maiden name not known & dob ranges from 1782 - 1790 depending on source) between 1817 and 1820.  I know of five children born to the couple - Thomas (1820), Jane (1824), Elizabeth and William (1827) and John (1831) - all birth dates are approx and in Ireland.  The family are found in Stranraer, Scotland 1841 census.  I have death certificates for both William and Mary however their parents names are unknown and not entered.
William was buried in United Presbytery cemetery so likely to be Protestant, if that helps.
Cheers

Europe / Researching in other countries
« on: Sunday 28 April 13 10:51 BST (UK)  »
I am researching an ancester - William Noble (1723-1811).  I suspect he was involved in the 1745 war and may have went to mainland Europe.  If I take France as the most likely destination - how would one begin researching in an other country?

Peeblesshire / William Noble 1723 - 1811
« on: Saturday 13 April 13 13:04 BST (UK)  »
I am researching my 6th great grandfather William Noble.  Born 20th October 1723, Newlands, Peebles - he died of old age on 23rd Mary 1811 at Infirmary Street, Edinburgh.  William was a school teacher.  I know he was in Edinburgh from 1772 when 5th great grandmother Janet (jessie/jesica) Noble was born.  There is no reference to his wife's name.  I have found references to him in Edinburgh Post Office Directories from 1774 - 1800 which sees him move from Flesh Market Close to Niddry's Wynd, then Potterrow and finally Bristo Street.  In the later directories he is listed as a teacher of languages.  I would love to find out:
When he moved to Edinburgh?
The path to becoming a teacher at that time?
His wife's name and date of marriage?
Did they have any other children?  Janet is born when he was 49!
Any information about where he might have taught?
Where he might be buried?
He lived at a fantastic time in the history of Edinburgh with the construction of South Bridge and the New Town, perhaps he rubbed shoulders in Parliamentary Square with some of the great philosophers of the day or maybe he taught in the poor parish schools.  Any information or new sources to search would be appreciated.  I live on Isle of Bute so do all of my research online.

Down / Marshall - Boles - Newry
« on: Saturday 16 June 12 11:31 BST (UK)  »
Looking for help with my great great grand parents William Marshall and Sarah Boles.  They were married 3rd May 1880 at St Patricks, Church of Ireland, Newry. If anyone can help me fill in the gaps that would be great.

William's father was also William - no mothers name known
Sarah's father was John - no mothers name known

I haven't been able to find birth certificates for neither William (abt 1863) nor Sarah (abt 1862).

They signed the Ulster Convenant 1912, lived in Stream Street, 1911.

Be great to get back further to establish whether they are native or crossed from Scotland. ;)
