The Common Room / Is Louisa my Elizabeth?
« on: Monday 09 November 20 23:00 GMT (UK)  »
Has anyone ever known an Elizabeth become a Louisa?
I think I have an Elizabeth from one census to a Louisa in another?
I have a family called Portlock in the 1891 Census and when trying to find them in the 1901 Census I found one possible. I can match up two of the children but the mother's name has changed from Elizabeth to Louisa.

In 1891 they are living in St George, Bristol at St Nicholas Terrace.
Elizabeth Portlock Birth Year 1844 Married Occupation Dressmaker
Clarinda Portlock Birth Year 1869 Daughter Single Occupation Dressmaker
Louisa Portlock Birth Year 1871 Daughter Single Occupation Clerk
Ethel Portlock Birth Year 1883 Daughter Single Scholar

In 1901 they are living in Horfield, Bristol at Wellington Crescent.
Louisa Portlock Birth Year 1846 Widow Occupation Dressmaker
Louisa Portlock Birth Year 1871 Daughter Single Occupation Dressmaker
Ethel Portlock Birth Year 1882 Daughter Single
Richard Portlock Birth Year 1892 Son
Cecil Portlock Birth Year 1896 Son

Richard and Cecil are actually the sons of Louisa Portlock born 1871 (the daughter)

So any thoughts on this would be greatly appreciated.

Gloucestershire / Whose child is Lawford?
« on: Saturday 31 October 20 15:49 GMT (UK)  »
I have a child Lawford Buckley on the 1901 Census listed as grandchild to the head Sarah Buckley and listed as the son to the son of Sarah (George Buckley). As George is not married I looked on the birth registers on the GRO site to find out the Mothers name but it is not listed so I assume Lawford is illegitimate. However when looking at the 1911 Census for George Buckley. He is listed as the head. His sister Ada (also written as Eda and Edon) is living with him and so is Lawford. Now Lawford is listed as Nephew to the head. So it now looks like Lawford is the son of Ada Buckley. I am now more inclined to think Lawford is the son of Ada and in the 1901 Census, it was just assumed that he was the son of George perhaps to save Ada's blushes? Any thoughts on this would be appreciated.
The census records are from the Frampton Cotterell area of Gloucestershire.

Hampshire & IOW Lookup Requests / Help - Maria Blackborow and her many husbands!
« on: Friday 01 August 14 16:42 BST (UK)  »
Hi
Can anyone help me with a few puzzles?
I need a bit of help with sorting out the many marriages and children of Maria Blackborow if they are all one and the same!

The facts.
Maria Blackborow was born about 1796 in Bristol. The daughter of Samuel Blackborow and Sarah Clark. Her surname has been spelt Blackborrow,Blackborough and Blackburne in different documents.

She married

1. Thomas Brooks in Wymering,Hampshire 8th Sept 1816 and they had to my knowledge three children Mary A born 1819, Maria born 1822 died 1826? and Thomas Daniel born 1828.Thomas senior died sometime before April 1828 as Maria married again on the 14th of that month.

2. Benjamin Shaw in Wymering,Hampshire 14th April 1828 and they had two children to my knowledge Benjamin Cornelius born 1829 and Emma born 1830.Benjamin senior possibly died October 1829

3. George Saunders sometime between 1829 and 1844 (If they did marry)George I believe died in 1844.

4. ? Jones sometime between 1844 and 1851

5. John Pratt possibly in 1851 as I have a John Pratt marrying a Maria Jones in 1851

Why do I think this?

Well I have Maria in the Hampshire 1841 census living with George Saunders and family of Emma Saunders (Emma Shaw) dau aged 10,Amelia Saunders dau aged 6,George Saunders son aged 6,Albert Saunders son aged 3 and Emily Saunders dau aged 4 months.
A few doors away are her step mother Margaret Blackborow (transcribed as Margaret Blackburne) and two of her other children Thos Brooks from her first marriage and Benjamin Shaw from her second marriage.
In the Hampshire 1851 census Maria is now living with John Pratt aged 40 and her children George Saunders,Albert Saunders and Emily Saunders and her father Samuel Blackborow and her step mother Margaret Blackborow.

So what do I need help with?

Firstly I am looking for the age of Benjamin Shaw on his marriage to Maria Brooks. They married on the 14th April 1828 in Wymering , Hampshire.I have a death for a Benjamin Shaw in 1829 but this Benjamin was 84.Could he have been the husband of Maria and father of the two children?
Secondly I am looking for the marriage of Maria and George Saunders.
Thirdly for a marriage between her and a ? Jones or if not her marriage to John Pratt if she did not have a fourth marriage to a ? Jones. :-\

If anyone can help with any of the puzzles I would be very grateful as it has been giving me a bit of a headache :(

Hi
Wondering if anyone can help.
I am looking for Thornton Cook born 1832/33 and his family.
He is with his mother Ann born 1806 (who I think may have been Ann Jones before her marriage) and siblings William b 1829,John b 1829/31,Elizabeth b 1836/37 and Herbert b 1838 and a Mary Jones b 1826 in 1841 at White Croft,Dean Forest,Gloucestershire.Piece 364 Folio 15 Page 24
In 1851 he is with his brother John and sister Elizabeth and an Aunt Margaret Harding (widow who may be Margaret Jones who married a William Harding and possibly Ann's sister) at Rosewood Vila,Whitecroft (now in the county of Monmouthshire)
I can find no trace of John,Elizabeth,Thornton or any others after this time.
Any ideas re Ann's marriage and baptism and whereabouts of the Cook's after 1851 would be most welcome

Gloucestershire Lookup Requests / Wrong Name on Marriage Certificate
« on: Monday 01 October 12 21:23 BST (UK)  »
Hi

Wondering if any one else has had the puzzle i have.
I recently sent off for a marriage certificate for Henry Harding b 1861/1862 son of Samuel Harding.
When it arrived it confirmed the person who i thought was his bride a Jessie Sage but his father was listed as William Harding (deceased) occupation Haulier.

Whats wrong with that? I must have got his fathers name wrong but no i am 99.9% sure his father was Samuel Harding.
The facts:-
Henry Harding was born 1861/1862 son of Samuel Harding and Mary Gregory.
He had three sisters Elizabeth,Amelia and Margaret and one brother William born 1857/1858.
Samuel the father died 1866 and Mary the mother re married in 1867.
Henry had an Uncle called William Harding b 1835/1836 and he was a haulier.
In 1871 census Henry is living with his mother and step father in New Houses opposite Limekiln Row in Durdham Down ,Clifton,Bristol two doors away from one of his fathers cousins Fanny Maria Harding now Rogers.
In 1881 census i have yet to find him.
1884 he gets married to Jessie Sage ( in 1881 she is a servant in Fanny Maria's house in DurdhamDown,Clifton,Bristol)
On the marriage certificate her father is listed as William Henry Sage and one of the witness's is a Emily Gibbons. She is the daughter of James Gibbons and Margaret Rebecca Harding (Fanny Maria's Sister)
In 1891 Census Henry and Jessie and daughter Florence are living in Clifton,Bristol and Henry is listed as a Cab Driver.
In 1901 there is no sign of Jessie and Henry is living with his Uncle William Harding.Listed as a lodger, married,Occupation Cab Driver. Also there is a child called Elsie Rogers listed as Niece of William Harding.Cousin of Henry?? Florence  i think is a servant at Silver Key ,High Street,Durdham Down,Clifton,Bristol.Silver Key is a Public  House and two of Fanny Maria's children are born there.
In 1911 no sign.

So is the name of father incorrect on the marriage certificate or do i have the wrong Henry Harding?

Can anyone help me solve the puzzle??

London & Middlesex Lookup Requests / Swainson and Eagles - Puzzle
« on: Monday 02 April 12 21:52 BST (UK)  »
Hello

I am looking for a marriage between Joseph Swainson born about 1764 in Middlesex (although i can't find his birth) and Jenny Ann Eagles born 09/01/1791 in Lambeth.

Joseph and Jenny Ann had one son (that i know of) called John Timothy Swainson born about 1829 in Leekhampton.

Joseph is listed as Independant in the 1841 census (he is living in Stroud,Gloucestershire),as an Annuitant blind in the 1851 census (Still living in Stroud,Gloucestershire) an Officer in the navy on his sons marriage certificate in 1855,as" formerly a clerk in a conveyancers office" on his death certificate in 1859 and as a "seaman, captain retired, ships name not known" on his wifes death certificate in 1868

So he is a bit of a puzzle and proving to be elusive in the baptism and marriage records.

Any help would be appreciated
