Armed Forces / Army birth 1908 - Lichfield?
« on: Sunday 25 January 15 14:13 GMT (UK)  »
Helen (Nellie) McGovern was born 6 - 9 -1908 to sergeant John McGovern 3203 West Riding Regt and Ellen Brosnan.  She was baptised at Lichfield 4 - 10 - 1908. The family believe she was not actually born in Lichfield but in transit somewhere, perhaps on board a ship. Is there any way of checking this? The birth cert of her brother John in 1903 specifies that he was born in the Married Quarters at York army barracks. However, Nellies birthplace is not specified on her cert.
thanks, Fiona

Armed Forces / John McGovern 33rd foot 1850s
« on: Thursday 01 January 15 14:51 GMT (UK)  »
Hi, I wonder if anyone could suggest where my gggf John McGovern service no 3867 born Dublin 1836 would have signed up with the 33rd foot regiment? I've seen it mentioned that sometimes when they were at 'home' they were in Dublin. Would they have been recruiting there in the 1850s?
Thanks and Happy New Year! Fiona

Seeking birthplace in Kerry of Garrett Stack who settled in Ennis, Co. Clare in the 1850s as a Master tailor. He had a brother James and sisters Kate, Margaret and Elizabeth (& maybe others). The sisters all went to the USA. Garrett married in Ennis in 1859 & had children Michael, Robert, Garrett, Mary, Margaret, Elizabeth, James, John Francis. Possibly related to the Robert Stack Scanlan family of Ballybunion. Thanks, Fiona

Armed Forces / Duke of Wellington's 33rd Foot mid-1800s
« on: Thursday 29 March 12 21:20 BST (UK)  »
My gggfather John McGovern was in 33rd Foot. Soldier number 3867 in the 1860s. I want to find his service record if possible, most notably to find out where in Ireland he was born. There was another John McGovern in the same unit (soldier no. 7) & his record is on Find My Past website. But no sign of my gggf John's there. Any suggestions or help?
