Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / Uploading Raw DNA to Another Site
« on: Friday 01 March 24 10:00 GMT (UK)  »
I manage my cousin's DNA results. He is keen to upload to another site to increase the chances of new matches. He wants me to do it but I am unable to download the raw DNA as the download instructions are apparently being sent to him. This means that it will be downloaded into his files and not mine. Therefore, I will be unable to do the upload to the chosen site. Any ideas how to get around this.

Somerset / Yeovil Union Workhouse
« on: Friday 12 January 24 11:17 GMT (UK)  »
I am helping someone who is researching an ancestor who gave birh in Yeovil Union Workhouse in 1872. We have the birth certificate but would like to find the admission and discharge records for the mother. Can anyone direct me to the relevant website?

Perthshire / Tombowie Perthshire
« on: Friday 12 January 24 11:15 GMT (UK)  »
I'm looking at the burial record for George McAinsh who was buried at Monzie Free Church, Perthshire on the 12th February 1850. His abode is not very clear but looks like Tombowie or something similar. I have Googled and nothing even remotely like it is coming up so I am assuming it doesn't exist any more but it is not showing on an old map either. Abodes such as Crieff and Gilmerton etc are on the pages so I assume it is in that vicinity.

Lanarkshire / Strathaven Brick Wall
« on: Friday 05 January 24 19:54 GMT (UK)  »
I am hoping someone can help with this brick wall. My mother has a DNA match with a lady in the US. The Ancestry Thrulines suggested that she descends from our main Hamilton line  from John Hamilton born 1700 Blackwood Yard, Lesmahagow, Lanarkshire but that is incorrect.  He is DNA verified. However, they must connect via the Hamiltons for there to be a match but there appears to be no relevant documentary evidence for this branch.

The match is via Agnes Hamilton apparently born 15th May 1843 in Strathaven. Agnes married Alexander McCanch in 1865 in Avondale, Lanarkshire. In about 1870, they went to Pennsylvania. The daughter of my mother's match has struggled with this family but a recent visit to Scotland and archives suggests the name is McAinsh. We are making some progress with this.

I cannot find a birth for Agnes Hamilton or most  of her siblings. Margaret about 1839, James about 1843, Thomas about 1846, George about 1850. Then the last few appear with Janet 1855, William 1860, Janet 1862 and Margaret 1864. Their parents were James Hamilton, a master Slater  and Margaret Hendrie. According to Janet's birth record, they married in April 1838 in Strathaven and on Mary's birth record 18th May 1837. Again, I can find no marriage record. Does anyone know if there are large chunks of the Strathaven registers missing or is there anywhere other than Scotland's People I can search?

Margaret Hendrie died in 1878 and James married his 2nd wife Janet Taylor. I have their marriage record. it states that James's parents are Thomas Hamilton Master Baker and Agnes Browning. His death record in 1890 gives the same information. Again, I am coming up against a brick wall with this Thomas and Agnes. I can't find a marriage for Thomas and Agnes or a birth for James or any other children. According to the census records James was born about 1815/1816 but his age at marriage suggests 1822. I did find a birth in 1808 with father James and mother Agnes but I think this is another family completely and this Agnes had surname McKenzie.

I feel the difficulty I am experiencing is due to missing records. Any advice would be very much appreciated.

Durham Lookup Requests / 1871 Sunderland Census Look up
« on: Friday 02 December 22 18:30 GMT (UK)  »
I am hoping that someone can help me with an 1871 census look up. This particular record appears to be frustratingly missing from Ancestry. It has happened on several occasions. I think I have found it on Find My Past but unfortunately, I don't have a current subscription. I also can't find it on familysearch.org.

I am helping my cousin find information for her ancestor John Park  after she came up against a brick wall. He is the father of Charles Alexander Park born 1877 Sunderland. My cousin thought Charles's father was also called Charles but his marriage record proves differently.

This has to be the family I am looking for:

Ellen Park born 1841  Durham - living  Bishopwearmouth
John Parka born 1834 Durham  - living Bishopwearmouth
Matthew Park born 1868 Durham - living Bishopwearmouth

Matthew was born before their marriage in 1870 but has the name Park so I am assuming he is John Park's son.

Ellen remarried in 1881 so we are assuming that John Park died before then but can't find a death record.

It would be good to get the information from this record. For example, it may specify where in Durham John Parks was born and his occupation. Anything to lead us back with the Park family.

Scotland / Scotland's People Centre Look Up Please
« on: Friday 01 July 22 11:29 BST (UK)  »
I am helping my cousin find some information about his grandmother's sister. He is not familiar with using Rootschat so am posting this request for a look up on his behalf.

I am  trying to find out what happened to the sister of my paternal grandmother, my great aunt Jeanie registered as Jeanie Whiteford Ross, born in Hamilton in 1902, possibly also known as Irene.

My cousin  has kindly traced her marriage to Charles Burnett Hay Reid on 20th June 1935 in Blantyre (who later died, in Stonehouse, in 1952).

What I am keen to do is find out what happened to Jeanie and whether or not she had children (I suspect that she did).

My cousin  has found six possible candidate children who were born in the area in that time frame but these are only guesses going by family names.

What I wish to find out is whether or not any of these were born to a Jeanie Reid née Ross, and if so what are their Scottish People reference numbers, so I can get certificates if I wish?

This is a predicament for me because I live over 300 miles from the nearest Scotland's People or Family History Centre, so I would be very grateful if anyone could please help me by looking up these names if they are planning to visit a centre soon.

Lanarkshire / Brick Wall
« on: Saturday 25 June 22 15:47 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to help my cousin find some information about his grandmother's sister. His grandmother was Grace Frame Ross born 5th October 1900 Hamilton, Lanarkshire. He knew she had 2 siblings because they lived in New York for a while and they show up on the 1910 census. He believed she had a sister Irene W Ross and brother Andrew F Ross as they are recorded on the census but could not find their births. We speculated that the F was Frame. However, just a few days ago, I found births for Jeanie Whiteford Ross and Andrew Thomson Ross who we now know are  indeed the siblings evidenced by the birth records. Sadly, Andrew died aged just 19 and single so we know there are no children from him but we are desperately trying to find some children for Jeanie.

My cousin always thought that 'Irene' stayed in USA and died in California but it looks like the leads were a red herring. I found a marriage for her to Charles Burnet Hay Reid born 1897 in Hamilton. They married in 1935 in Blantyre. Charles was recorded as being a Master Printer as was his father.  He does not appear in Post Office Directories. We have a potential electoral Roll for them in Glasgow in 1937 in Westmuir Street  or Valuation Roll records for 1935 and 1940 living at 34 Stonefield Crescent,  Blantyre, Lanarkshire where they married. This was a stone's throw from where Jeanie lived in 109 Stonefield Road.

There is, of course, the possibility that they left the country.

Charles had once been a Merchant Seaman and I have details of a medal awarded to him. The strange thing is, he was actually recorded as Charles Hay Reid on his birth record and then it appears that he at some point 'acquired' the Burnet but then  dropped both the Burnet and Hay which is making him impossible to find.

Any help would be very much appreciated.

Renfrewshire / Greenock Census and Deaths
« on: Saturday 15 January 22 17:42 GMT (UK)  »
I am trying to trace the daughter of my great x 4 grandfather's brother. She is Rose Ann Dunning born about 1826 Ireland married to Henry Bonner., also born in Ireland the same year. They married on the 8th April 1861 at St. Lawrence Catholic Church, Greenock and gave their address as 3 Broad Close. This is the address the Dunning family lived and her mother died there but Rose Ann and Henry were not living there on the 1861 census which was taken the day before their wedding on the 7th April.
After a lot of searching, I eventually found them on the 1871 census on Scotland's People living at 57 Shaw Street, East Back Land, Greenock.  That record is not on Ancestry.
They had, as far as I can trace, 6 children but 4 died in infancy. Only Mary Ann and Catherine survived as far as 1871 and appear on the census record.
Then the family just seem to disappear off the face of the earth. I would particularly like to trace Rose Ann's death but unfortunately both of their surnames are widely mis-transcribed.
Any help or ideas would be very much appreciated.

Durham / Burn Crook Hill Tanfield
« on: Sunday 17 October 21 11:55 BST (UK)  »
My 4th great grandmother Ann Gofton was baptised in Tanfield, Durham on the 4th October 1772. The actual entry records her abode as Burn Crook Hill. Has anyone any idea where that was located? I have tried to look at old maps but can't find it.

I am struggling to find more about this Gofton family. She married Thomas Chambers, a Potter, on the
19th February 1793 at All Saint's Newcastle Upon Tyne and is is recorded on most of the baptisms of her children that she was the daughter of William Gofton, a Mason from Tanfield.
