Down / Place name Bally-clender?
« on: Wednesday 05 April 17 16:30 BST (UK)  »
In an 1896  book about the Friendly Sons of St. Patrick and the Ancient Order of the Hibernians (Philadelphia pub)I came across an entry for a Nicholas McNab whose father was born in Bally-clender County Down. I can't find that place to save my life. Perchance, has anyone heard of it?
Thanks for the look.

I know that William Reid Young died in the Wreck of the Douro in 1882. I've found lots of records pertaining to the man and his family. I know he was born in Aberdeen in 1832, I know who he married and that they had their home in Southampton.
I am not by any means certain that I am a relative, but I think finding the records of his time at sea may help me determine that. Any suggestions on where to begin?
Thanks in advance for any assistance.

Census and Resource Discussion / Re 1880 US Census for New Jersey (names mcCann, Young)
« on: Wednesday 24 February 16 17:29 GMT (UK)  »
For several years I have been looking for family in the 1880 US census. I know the persons involved lived in Newark, NJ before and after that census, as they show up in 1870 US, NJ state census 1875, 1885, and I have marriage records and birth records for family members and they were living there. Not all of them are in each records, but the two families seem to be well represented in Newark in that period. The two families are named McCann and Young. In 1880 they were not connected as yet.

I have looked for specific names, tried every spelling and misspelling I can devise, used wild cards, variants and broad parameters for age, place of birth and everything else. This has been an effort over several years. I have browsed the areas of the city where I thought they might be, yet have found no trace of them. I have looked in their former places of residence (Brooklyn or Jersey City) yet have had no success. I could possibly understand if one family was missing, but I find neither family. All I can think is that an area of the city was overlooked in compiling the census, and they coincidentally lived there.
I don't know whether anyone has familiarity with that census, but I am putting it out there. What might I be missing?

Does anyone have information about any of the persons mentioned in this inscription, or son Thomas b. 1828 who is not mentioned. The stone is in St. Clement's in Aberdeen.  Thanks for your attention.

Occupation Interests / Recommendations for Reading about 19th Century Mariners?
« on: Sunday 30 August 15 22:56 BST (UK)  »
I haven't cemented a connection to any Scottish mariners as yet, but would still like to know something about merchant seaman in the 19th century. Can anyone point me towards some reading on the topic? Much obliged for any suggestions.

Aberdeenshire / St. Clement's Aberdeen 1824 Why marry in Minister's house?
« on: Wednesday 12 August 15 18:37 BST (UK)  »
Wondering why marital record specifies that Alexander Young and Elizabeth Humphrey were married in the minister's house rather than in the church?
It seems that people were sometimes married in a private home, or the church, or the minister's house. It may be of no great moment, but I am curious as to how this was determined. A matter of cost, or something else?
The date was July 8, 1824, I believe a Thursday.
Thanks, as always for any input.

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Name, Pleae from Baptismal Register
« on: Wednesday 08 July 15 18:09 BST (UK)  »
The transcript for my g-g great grandfather's baptismal certificate tells me that John McCann was born to Charles McCann and Letitia Dillon with sponsors Susan Mccann and John McCann. I found the record in the Irish registers released today and the surname of the male sponsor does not look at all like  McCann. Can anyone tell me what name that might be on the excerpt posted here?
Thanks for any help.

Lanarkshire / St. Mungo's Glasgow Sacramental records
« on: Saturday 23 May 15 19:09 BST (UK)  »
Through Scotland's People I have found my g-g grandparents John McCann and Mary Hewett married in St. Mungo's in 1852. I have found a daughter baptized there in 1858. I find no records of the baptism of any of the sons, Charles born in 1853 or Francis born 1856. Are all the sacramental records for St. Mungo not indexed on Scotland's People?
I have tried variations of names and dates. I have enlarged the search to look in other districts, all to no avail. Any ideas? Would I have a better chance by requesting a search from the Scottish Catholic Archives?

Lanarkshire / Old Dalbeth Cemetery McCann 1862 Help reading record, please
« on: Thursday 14 May 15 21:05 BST (UK)  »
I'm having trouble reading the record. Particularly interested in McCann, no first name on the left hand side near the top. I don't know what all the columns and letters mean. Thanks for any assistance.
