The Common Room / Occupation - Collarmaker
« on: Sunday 01 December 19 22:18 GMT (UK)  »
Does anyone know what a Collarmaker would have done in 1746?

I have always assumed it was leather work for horse collars etc, but in 1746 I have a "Thomas Tylsey the Younger, Clothier" in a court case, and the only candidate in the town at the time had served an apprenticeship with a Collarmaker.

So I'm wondering if making shirt collars was a thing at that time? My candidate's father was a Tailor, which would seem to fit quite well.

Dorset / Poole, Dorset - Links between Tilsed and Boynes Families???
« on: Monday 18 February 19 22:17 GMT (UK)  »
My 4g-grandfather John Tilsed b1785 had - amongst others - two sisters named Mary and Aphra/Afhra.

Mary Tilsed b1793 was a witness to the marriage of John King and Mary Boynes on 13th Sep 1810.
Aphra Tilsed b1799 was a witness to the marriage of Thomas Williams and Eliza Boynes on 28th Feb 1819.

Mary Boynes b1790 and Eliza Boynes b1799 were also sisters, their parents being Thomas Boynes and Sarah née Wills. At both marriages, the second witness was the girls' maternal uncle, Thomas Wills.

I currently have no idea whatsoever why the Tilsed girls would have been witnesses for the Boynes girls - in my experience witnesses are often siblings, or married to siblings, of the bridal couple, and I can't find any relationships at all between the families at this time. (There are a couple of marriages linking the families in 1830 and 1836).

Does anyone have any idea what's going on here?

Other Countries / Nevis: Looking for PCC Will or Admon of William Tilsed, 1669
« on: Sunday 23 July 17 16:19 BST (UK)  »
I have found reference to a William Tilsed of Nevis Island in "Caribbeana: Being Miscellaneous Papers Relating to the History, Genealogy, Topography, and Antiquities of the British West Indies, Volume 6, under the heading of Admons (PCC) relating to West Indians."

The entry is

"1669 : November: "Wm Tilsed, 1, to Egidia T the M. of W.T. I.of Nevis, ba". (folio 145)

I take this to mean that responsibility for the Will or Administration of William Tilsed, a bachelor resident in the Island of Nevis, was awarded on 1st November 1669 to his mother, Egidia Tilsed.

My query is - how do I go about finding whatever papers might exist on this matter? I have tried reading the National Archives' leaflets but I keep getting confused! I have also searched their website and that of Dorset Archives, and done a bit of general googling.

I have read that "Egidius/Egidia" is the Latin for Giles, and I actually do have a "Tilsed, Giles, widow" in Wimborne, Dorset (home of many Tilseds at the time) paying church rates in 1663. She would seem to be a good candidate for William's mother, given that the probate statement would have been written in Latin.

This individual may also be the William Tilsed who was mentioned in the will of one Henry Gillingham, signed 15th November 1662:

"I give and bequeath unto Francis Carlile and William Tilsed one Thousand pounds of sugar apeece And to each of them one whole yeare of the tyme of servitude as per their Indentures."
