Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / Help appreciated
« on: Friday 07 April 23 09:48 BST (UK)  »
Hi there,

I am trying to identify the biological father of CS - my biological grandfather. I suspect CS’s birth certificate to list the incorrect father (I suspect this as my DNA results currently have no links to the listed father, and a bunch to another male). Although I do appreciate that DNA is somewhat random and its possible matches could appear in the future.

CS’s mother was HD (I match to her ancestors). HD was married to the birth certificate father at the time of CS’s birth. CS was born the 6th child of 7 to this couple in 1902 and was named after the birth certificate father (also CS).

The man I suspect to be the true father is EM, also known as HH. EM was a convicted bigamist and lived a very colourful life to say the least. One of his son’s (RM) has uploaded a DNA test and matches to me at 394cM. I have tried to make contact with RM several times, but have not yet had any luck.

RM’s brother is deceased, but his children (EM’s grandchildren) have also uploaded tests and I match to them as follows:
    255cM
    207cM

And their children (EM’s great grandchildren):
    181cM
    170cM
    159cM
    156cM
    144cM
    128cM
    126cM
    124cM
    110cM
    109cM
    107cM
    103cM

There is also an unknown shared match at 374cM. I have not yet had any luck making contact with them or connecting them into the tree. They do not have a family tree uploaded to refer to.

EM had two brothers, I haven’t found any descendants of them on any database yet (but I will keep searching). They were all of the right age to be a potential father.

I cannot conclusively link EM or his two brothers to the same local area as HD at the time of CS’s conception, but they were all in the Royal Navy. They all lived in a similar but broader area of the UK.

I have seen some photos of EM and one of his grandchildren, and there is a strong familial resemblance.

Am I jumping to too many conclusions, or is there a strong chance either EM or his two brothers is the biological father to CS? It’s one of those brick walls that I feel I have been staring at for too long and need a new set of eyes to look at it. I don’t believe I will ever find a paper trail for this, and that DNA is my only way of putting it to bed.

Thank you in advance,

The Common Room / Cornelius Cyril Smith Lookup Request
« on: Saturday 28 July 18 20:35 BST (UK)  »
Hiya,

I'm desperately looking for help tracking down information relating to my great grandfather.

My grandfather was born out of wedlock, and all I know from his Barnardo's record is that his father is named as Cornelius Cyril Smith, aged 23 (born approx 1901/1902). He was a Corporal stationed in India at the time with the 2nd Battalion Lincolnshire Regiment in the summer of 1924, which is where he met my great grandmother.

This is a whole side of my family that I have no idea about, and the surname Smith is not particularly helpful. I would assume from his regiment that he was from the Lincolnshire area - but that is purely an assumption. My DNA results do, however, support this.

His approx birth year means it's unlikely military records exist in the public domain for him, but just to find a birth index for him would be wonderful.

Any help greatly received!

Kent / Sevenoaks Rail Crash 1884
« on: Wednesday 14 August 13 00:24 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

I'm looking for any information on the Sevenoaks rail crash that killed my 3 x G Granddad in 1884. I've only very recently discovered it was the cause of his death and so far all I know about it is the bare details and a photo. I've tried to look into newspaper archives as surely it would have been covered but the only stories I can find are on the British newspaper archives, with whom I don't have a subscription. I'd really like to know a bit more about the accident that sadly took his life

Any information would be much appreciated,

Thanks,

Rutland / Birth Record Help
« on: Tuesday 02 July 13 13:16 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

I'm hoping that someone might be able to help trace some parents as I've had no luck!

These are the only details I know,

Frances Tuckwood born somewhere between 1795-1800 in Exton, Rutland (according to census records)
She had 3 children (John, Ann and Elizabeth Tuckwood) all born out of wedlock between 1823-1835 approx
She eventually married John Perril (wide range of spelling for this surname) in 1841 somewhere along the Lincs/Rutland border and spent the rest of her life in South Witham, Lincs

I'm looking for her parents but I no longer hold a subscription to any site and I've found nothing relevant on familysearch thus far. I live the opposite end of the country to the appropriate records office so it's not really possible to look in person, either. If anyone could perhaps find information where I can't that'd be brilliant, but it seems difficult! I'm happy to buy a marriage cert if that would be the best path

Many thanks,

Armed Forces / Chelsea Pensioner Records Request
« on: Monday 22 October 12 15:20 BST (UK)  »
Hi all!

I was hoping someone might be able to help me as I don't have a FindMyPast subscription (only Ancestry!). I know my GGgrandad served in the Boer War from a 1901 census but that's all I know. I would love to get hold of his chelsea pension record but the search results gave me no indication as to which one he is out of a possible 4

His vitals:

William Whitfield born abt 1865 in Shropshire
Worked as a labourer in an ironworks and later an attendant in a private asylum
Moved to Tonbridge, Kent sometime around 1897 where he married Emily Thorn of Downton, Wilts
He had three children that could potentially come up on the record
Edith Bessie 1898 Wilts
William Thomas 1900 Tonbridge
Katherine 1902 Tonbridge

Thanks, I'll be so grateful of any help!

Hi,

I'm having an ongoing problem with finding people on various censuses and wondered if a fresh pair of eyes could help.

Rose Preston was born abt 1870 in Aldershot, Hampshire and can be found on the 1871 census visiting an aunt in London. A further search on familysearch shows her parents and siblings living in Aldershot at the time (I can't find this record on ancestry). Come 1881 I can't find her or any of her family on any census anywhere. I catch up with who I am fairly sure to be her back in Aldershot in 1891 but it's the missing 1881 record that's bugging me!

The other problem is her future husband born William Henry Whitmore in abt 1872 (but this could vary a few years) in the Sandhurst, Surrey area. His father was in the army (royal engineers) and apparently they moved around a fair bit! He often went by either Harry or Henry. His marriage certificate states him living in London in 1891 working as a barman but I can't find any census for him past 1881. He did also join the army at some point (missing from the 1901 census as serving in the Boer war). I'm looking for the 1891 census record for him

Any help would be great!

Thanks,

World War One / Tracing a soldier's career
« on: Friday 31 August 12 12:28 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

I'm having an ongoing problem tracing my GG Grandfather Walter Elston's time in the army. From his service number (7932) I can presume he joined the 2nd Bt Lincs in about 1907. Interestingly he has another service number for the same battalion (63821) but I don't know enough about the military to know why that is.

From his medal card I can tell he came over to France on 5th Nov 1914 where he stayed for the duration of the war.

Following the war he was posted to India where he took his family but died in 1921, interestingly noted as a "post-war casualty" and can be found on the CWGC website though the information is somewhat basic.

What I'd really like is to paint a picture somewhat of what he would have been involved in (someone online once told me he was a drummer but I've never been able to find how they found that, I do know he was a private, then a lance corporal. Pre military he was a shoeing smith) - more significantly why he died so young (32) and despite it being 1921, described as a post-war casualty. Why would that be?

Any help would be hugely appreciated, I understand the later part of my question is purely speculation but I'm happy to hear any ideas.

Thanks,

World War One / Walter Elston - 2nd bn Lincolnshire Regiment
« on: Wednesday 11 April 12 18:53 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

I'm trying to find out what happened to my great granddad Walter Elston and was directed to this site!

I know he served with the 2nd bn Lincolnshire Regiment and died in Poona, India in 1921. On one somewhat vague document he was listed as a "post war casualty". I bought and downloaded his medal card but truthfully I don't really know what it means! His service no was 4793138

I was wondering if anyone could paint any sort of clearer picture about what might have happened to him, or what his role would have been during WW1 - anything really!

Thank you
